The First 5 Things I do When I Get a New BlackBerry

Uncategorized

Working at RIM lets me play work with a lot of BlackBerry® smartphones. Since I’m switching to new ones all the time, I thought I’d share what I do when I migrate.

1. Go through the setup wizard, which will configure the device and my email.

2. Change the font size. I like a small font size so I can see more of a message at once. You can change the font size in Options (the wrench icon)-> Screen/Keyboard.

3. Arrange my apps on the home screen. There are some apps I never use so I hide those. My top row of applications are my most used apps – Work email, personal email, BlackBerry® Messenger, Google Talk™, calendar and browser. To rearrange the applications, I just select the app, hit the menu button, and hide/move the application.

4. Download additional applications. The main ones for me are the Facebook and Google Talk applications.

5. PING!!! my friend Tim on his smartphone to let him know that I’m on a new device. It makes him jealous. ;)

So, what do you do when you first get your device?

The first thing that needs to be done is to set up your theme. I have to move all my icons around, make folders and organized my icons so I know where to find them.

Oh man nothing is worse then moving all your icons around getting them perfect. Then you realize you didn’t change themes to the one you like and having to do it all over again once you change the theme. RIM I know your listening :) please allow your icons to stay the same when changing themes or ask if we want the current setup copied over to the new theme… please!!!!

When I get a new device all I have to do is plug it in to my Desktop Manager to get BES rolling again and all my settings are copied down from the server from my last backup.
Does anyone know if there is another way to get BES setup other then installing DM with Exchange integration? I know I can reset my account on the BES server and set it up that way but I think I upgrade 10 BBs a month and its hard because I have to be at their desk and they have to have DM installed and preconfigured to their last device to activate it. Or log into BES to reset their password. Any quicker way that I could do from the comfort of my desk?

First, I camp out where ever I hear there is a launch going to be!! (8 hours over night, but got my bold! :)
FIRST and formost thing I do, plug it in my BES server, and start the application dump!! :) I have a particular set of apps games and utils I use, swapping devices with the BB, couldnt be any easier! :)
Then I do the standard thing I am SURE everyone does, spends countless hours going through every menu, option and setting, I lose touch with Friends and family!!
Then, if theres time, well for this I make the time, I go get a new Tattoo! :)

For #5 this might help you in the future:
    http://www.shopblackberry.com/
It’s a good place to see all the (official) cases that are available. Even if you don’t buy from there, it’s a useful resource.

    1) Run switch device wizard
    2) Update PIN/IMEI on BIS account
    3) Push service books
    4) “Register now” in host routing table and do a hard
    reset
    5) Play
p.s. This is if I’m leaving it stock which I don’t. When I got my bold I had .247 tweaked (vendor file removed and VVM set to be optional) and loaded on my PC before my phone even arrived and had it loaded within the first hour. I’ve since upgraded to .266 and waiting for a stable app friendly leak of 5.0 to put on.
