Facebook for BlackBerry Version 1.6 Launches!

After the release of Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones version 1.5 you told us we were missing some important features in our application, like the ability to view Photos and Profiles.  Well, we’ve been working hard and are excited to have these features available for you now in the new Facebook for BlackBerry version 1.6 release.

The new version will now let you:

- View your Status Feeds quickly as the application landing page, and give you quick access to the Facebook Publisher and your highlight feed.

Sean_Status_Feed_Screen

- View Profiles in order to see Wall posts.

Sean_wall_view

- Browse through Photo Albums.

sean_photo_album

- Browse through Photos in a carousel view.

Download the new version today from your desktop or from your BlackBerry smartphone and start exploring these new features in addition to the Friend List and Calendar Integration features added in the 1.5 release. Then, tell us what you think! We want to know what other features we should work on for our next release, too.

Thanks for the feedback! You’re right. There isn’t full BlackBerry calendar sync with the Facebook CICAL like there is with a BES CICAL services. Also, if your BlackBerry is connected to a BES the Facebook Friend List – Contact List Connect feature, and Facebook Calendar feature may be disabled by default.

I like the update but I can’t get the calendar syncing to work. Reading the post below I see the answer as I am on a BES.

The comments state that the “Facebook Calendar feature may be disabled by default” when connected to a BES. Is there a way to enable it when connected to a BES?

I think there’s a bug that annoys me in this version. When I go to Friends List, some of my friends are not listed there.
I have tried to refresh the friends list several times, but it still don’t show.

I live in Austria and have a Bold and I couldn’t download the new app yet. I also tried it over the website by sending the download link via E-mail, but it doesn’t work either.
When I try with my bberry, it says that I don’t have the necessary requirements..which is BS.
    Anyway..guess it still got bugs.

I am very excited with the screens that I am seeing in your blog and have tried to download the app, but am constantly getting the following error:
“Could not connect because a data service is not available. Please try again later. If this continues, contact your service provider for support.”
The 1.5 version worked without a problem on my bberry and I also still have access to the web, msn, etc – so it is specifically related to the new 1.6 :(
Any ideas? This is very frustrating :s
    Thanks!
    Vivian
ps. I have a Spanish number and am currently roaming in the US by using the edge network – but this was not an issue until the new download :(

I have noticed only two issues with FB 1.6:
The application is slow, especially when retrieving comments. But I find the application slow at times even when not retrieving comments. Not sure what’s going on, but FB 1.5 was more responsive when navigating the application.
If there is a link in a comment (or presumably any other block of text), the text block distorts/becomes fuzzy when scrolling. This only seems to happen when a text block contains a link. For example, if I am scrolling through comments and I come across a comment with a link in it, when the comment cell is highlighted in blue, the text in that cell becomes distorted/fuzzy.
Can someone look into these issues please? Otherwise, I find the application to be satisfactory. I am running FB 1.6 on a Bold with OS 4.6.0.266. Thanks.

How can I upgrade to the old version 1.5? The newer version 1.6 is a step backwards in terms of photo upload quality. I waited forever for satisfactory quality uploads in version in 1.5 and then it was taken away within a couple months.
GIVE THE USER THE OPTION OF FAST CRAPPY UPLOADS OR SLOWER HI-QUALITY UPLOADS. I don’t need to browse my photos if that is what is the sticking point.
If anyone has 1.5 that they can send to me, please let me know.

I also am having issues with this version in regard to refreshing my friends list. I have tried to refresh the list several times, but I wait, and wait, and wait for it to get to 100%, and it NEVER does. In fact, it doesn’t get above 40%, and I have waited for up to an hour!!! I have tried deleting the application and redownloading it, rebooting the phone, nothing seems to work. I have the Blackberry Curve, and I did just read that “Facebook 1.6 for BlackBerry smartphones is not supported on BlackBerry smartphones with trackwheels.” It seems to work just fine otherwise, but could this be the issue???? HELP!

Great update! Love the extra functionality in this release.
I, like other people here have issues allegedly related to BES. But how did calendar and address book integration work fine in 1.5 and don’t work in 1.6? Can this be turned on?
Also, I seem to have stopped receiving direct messages with this version. What happened?

    Dear Becky,
    Thanks for replying my comment.
Actually when I refresh the friend list, the progress made to 100% but still some of my friends are not in the list.
Is it because too many friends that I have?
So for the moment I downgraded the facebook app to the latest 1.5
Hope the next version will be much better

    Hi,
Since the day before yesterday i am unable to comment some statuses.
    The following error message appears:
“User is not accessible for this request.”
I am not the only one with that problem, so its not a device specific problem (see http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/facebook-1-6-app-user-not-accessible-request-249512/)
    Any help would be appreciate,

    Dear ones,
I had the Facebook Application 1.5 working perfectly alright. But since i have upgraded to 1.6, the typical message “Could not connect because a data service is not available. Please try again later. If this continues, contact your service provider for support” bothers me. My operator does not block facebook as i can still access on wap or edge.
The google application also cannot find the network. I used wifi.. i used edge and had both activated at same time, but no use.
Can someone guide me out of this please.. .
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply Becky!
BlackBerry Calendar application checkbox is deselected and grayed out. So I can’t turn that on!
BlackBerry Contacts applications is selected and grayed out. So it’s always on.
The only one I can change is BlackBerry Message application.
The links you supplied don’t say what to do if the option is disabled (deselected and grayed out).
Receiving direct messages was my fault. I realized I had Facebook emails filtered into separate folder so they were never reaching my BB. I didn’t realize Facebook for BB “interprets” those email that Facebook sends to me instead of direct FB->BB communication.

Hi ~ I’ve had the Facebook v1.6 app on my BlackBerry Storm 9530 v4.7.0.148 for a little while, and it worked fine until recently. I’m suddenly no longer able to access my friend list. I’m not on a BES, so I’m wondering why I now get the message, “Your friend list is not available” when I hit the “friends” icon, which obviously means I can’t send or post messages unless I go to the mobile site. This may have happened after I downloaded another app (that I didn’t even want and uninstalled). How can I get my friend list back on my BB? I’ve tried everything, including uninstalling/reinstalling the FB app, rebooting, etc. Please help.

I’m sorry to say this but 1.6 is horribly slow on my Pearl 8110. Starting the application: I can’t use it because it takes forever to refresh the status list; meanwhile I can’t even enter a quick status update. Reading a friend’s message or comment: I can’t use it because everyone shows up as “Private User” while the data is loaded s l o w l y. Trying to view pictures is slow and all the photos are so tiny I can’t see anything. It’s just intolerable. I have uninstalled it.
How do it get 1.5 back? The messaging integration was nice. Same with the calendar. Please??

The best feature of the FB app has to be the photo browser. I am very impressed with the carousel view. My friends with iPhones did not snicker at my old 8830 when I shared photos from my recent photo session. Nice job! I am not sure about the calendar integration. I will have to play with that and see what it does.
I am wanting iCal support in the BB and wireless. Until BB supports wireless, I am only a few days away from switching to another cellular device. I have read that the wireless feature will be available in the soon to come Storm 2. I just rolled my eye when the sales person showed me the Tour- sans wireless. I need it at work to monitor wireless network remotely.

Yes it is possible to enable the BlackBerry Calendar and BlackBerry Contacts application integration when your BlackBerry is connected to a BES. Your BES Administrator must follow the steps outlined in the How to control Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones 1.6 organizer data access Knowledge Base article (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB18427), once this is completed the selection boxes will no longer be grayed out.

Some new features that I would like to see in the next version:
    – Allow status comments to be sorted with the oldest at the top instead of the newest at top. I hate reading from the bottom to the top.
    – As with the web interface, I would like to be able to click a “Like this” on someone’s status.
I miss being able to click on the “poke” option in the toolbar at the top…

Hi, I have a Bold and I had v1.5 installed and working correctly. When v1.6 came out, I installed it and it worked correctly for a while, then I stopped receiving Notification updates and Inbox updates. I tried clearing the caches (FB and Blackberry). I tried logging out and in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app both through the ‘berry and through my PC. Nothing has worked. I really miss my FB app. Any suggestions?

It works for 24 hours then poof it dies, I have tried uninstalling the app
I have tried re installing the app.

    Hi,
I have the new facebook application for my blackberry (curve) 8900.
I have about 2,700 friends on facebook since I’m a dj. When I try connecting some of my contacts in my blackberry address book to their facebook profiles their names don’t appear when I look for them through the facebook app.
I tried refreshing the list through the facebook app on my phone but still no luck. I know for sure that several of these friends have their privacy seetings pretty much non-existent.
I love the fact that I can connect the contacts from faceboook to bbm (especially the new one with pics) and to my phone book (so facebook pics come up), however now that all my facebook friends don’t appear in my blackberry facebook app, there is no way to do that…
    PLEASE HELP!

i have not been able to download photos taken with my blackberry curve for months! for the first year of ownership i had no problems with the phone at all. i am also having problems downloading music from my i tunes (on my pc) to my blackberry. as a fitness instructor and business owner this has caused me much grief. my opinon of the blackberry has gone from a 10+ to a big fat 0! i have gone into t-mobile for support miultiple time and they told me to update the bb desktop software, which i have done, but it has not solved either of these problems. my additional memory card is not even being reconized by the desktop. rumor has it this is a very popular problem amongst blackberry curve users. does anyone out there have a real solution???

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hello,

What version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager are you using. If you go to Options-Media Card on the BlackBerry smartphone is the card recognized there. Also please make sure that Mass storage support is turned On and Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected is set to Yes as well. Please specify the version of the BlackBerry smartphone software as well under Options>About.

    Thank you

  • judyknight

The new version doesn't allow facebook to connect to blackberry contacts so people's facebook photos can be seen on my BB contact page. Why is that?

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hello,

Navigate to the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphone application and press the menu key. Select Options in this screen you should see the option to link your contacts.

    Thank you

  • judyknight

Thanks for your answer. The option to connect my Facebook account with
Calendar and Contacts is greyed out and not selectable.

is it possible to use wifi to access the facebook app ?

  • annettekim

Hi i just got my blackberry 8520 and clicked the facebook app to give it a try then all of a sudden all the facebook birthdays got onto my calendar which i do not want. i have tried everything to delete and deactivate it and looked up ways online but i dont have certain links to press as other blackberrys. is there anyway to completely get rid of it?

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hello,

Once the Facebook contacts have been integrated with the BlackBerry smartphone address book the only way to disable it is to go to Facebook press the menu key and go to Options. Uncheck BlackBerry contacts application this will stop Facebook from future updating your BlackBerry Address Book. All the changes that were made already will have to be manually removed.

    Thank you

  • annettekim

when i do so, i do not see “blackberry contacts” unless i am in the wrong area. so tell me if i am correct: i first go on my facebook app, then click menu, options straight on my page from my blackberry then there should be something that says contacts for my calendar? sorry for the confusion

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hi,

You are correct navigate to Facebook for BlackBerry-press the menu key-select Options. On this screen you should see 3 different check marks one of them next to BlackBerry Address Book.

Check out the following article as well.

With our corporate security policy (which I cannot modify), version 1.7 does not work.

Or do you plan to build a 1.8 version which tries several ways of connecting?

I've had the Bold 9700 for a couple of months now and have had no issues with connecting to the Facebook app until this morning. I updated my OS. All of my other apps on my phone are working just fine. However, Facebook is giving me an error that reads “A connection cannot be established to the Facebook server.” I've been trying to google how to fix this all morning and keep finding so many possible reasons I can't connect: Facebook moved servers in June, the new OS won't work with the app, etc. Could someone please help me figure out what is really the issue so I can correct it?

Ha, can any of you that have installed this FB app on their BB confirm that it will NOT automatically run it's “friend-finder” software and send emails to everyone in your address book/contacts – on your blackberry – that are on Facebook? I know that this has happened in the past, and I want to install the app on my phone, but I'm afraid it will do this (send friend requests) before I can even go in an adjust any settings.. the first thing it does is asks me for my password, so I'm afraid. Thanks for your help – I really appreciate it… I just want to be sure it won't do that as my phone is connected to my job and it has my entire job phone directory/address book on the blackberry.. Thanks again – maggie

  • Remy786

If you are on contract- it should work and you'll need to contact your carrier.

If your on pay as you go- then you either need a blackberry tariff, or a blackberry bolt on (this is what o2 provides, (not so sure about other networks) however, once you opt in for one of these, you can use all the blackberry services.

On pay as you go, you can only use the phones browser, and through that you can use facebook for the time being, but this excludes the benefits of using other Blackberry services such as Blackberry Messenger, Facebook App. These can be recieved when you opt in for a blackberry tariff, or bolt on if you are on pay as you go.

Ya know, this appears to be a fairly wide spread issue. It would be nice if blackberry or facebook can offer a little more advice other than turn wifi off and back on. Some of us are not stupid, and we have full data plans, we have reinstalled the app, etc. Still does not work. Surely someone has a more thought out troubleshooting guide. Error 100, what does that relate to? Anymore additional information would be nice. Mayne there is a common setting that needs to be enabled or something on the blackberry for this to work. I am about ready to get rid of thee blackberries and get Iphones. Ridiculous support.

The advice from BlackBerryHelp_Pavel is pretty consistent. So are the posts from us who need help. Is there another solution other than re-install, call providor tech support, or pull out the battery? it is most likely a providor issue as there is no way BlackBerry or facebook would let us down…would they?

  • Anonymous

You can prevent the contact sync from happening when you install Facebook for BlackBerry. Make sure you remove the check in the box for the BlackBerry Contacts Application.

  • Anonymous

What seems to be the issue you are experiencing with Facebook for BlackBerry?

  • Anonymous

In order to use some applications, you are required to have an active data plan. It is listed in the product documentation.

  • Le00nn

    Hello,

I have installed the newest facebook app at this time (1.8) and when I try to log in the app tells me that there is an error with connection to the server – (100) code…I don’t know wat to do, I’m on contract (Era GSM – Poland ;) and I am able to browse internet with my default Storm 2′s browser…I have got problems only with this app, I can’t to log in via 3G or WiFi as well…any ideas? :(

  • Anonymous

    Hello Le00nn,

Try uninstalling Facebook for BlackBerry, then downloading and installing again. To do this go to Options> Applications, highlight Facebook then press the Menu Key and choose Delete.

Once the uninstall is done, pull the battery to restart your device if you weren’t prompted for a reboot. Then using your BlackBerry browser go to: http://www.blackberry.com/facebook and download the application again. Then test logging in.

    Hope this helps.

  • Maggie-o

I finally took the plunge and installed Facebook on my Blackberry Tour.. I did as suggested by others and UNCHECKED ALL the boxes. I was nervous because I had to log in first, but I did, and it works fine and no harm has come to me – no friend finder messages sent out etc.. everything works fine. I did just look in my applications list, to see what version I have – but it’s not even there! That’s okay.. for now anyway – it works.. I would agree with the others, if yours doesn’t work, uninstall, do a battery pull, then re-install. Maggie

  • Lisa

I am having the same issue as many of Facebook Blackberry App users below and it is EXTREMELY frustrating. To pay this much money and have to deal with these issues is completely ridiculous. I’ve tried EVERY single recommendation below and nothing has worked. I know I have set up everything correctly because I have done it in the past. It is apparently a glitch in the new FB application. Any clue when it will be resolved? I just want to turn off my Email notifications and not “try again later”. I’ve been trying over a week now!!! Please fix this asap so us Crackberries can go on with our lives happily. Thanks.

  • Anonymous

    Hi Tounges720,

Data plans are provided by your carrier or wireless service provider. I suggest speaking with them for further information.

    Hope this helps.

  • Anonymous

    Hi Lisa,

If you are having issues with turning off the email notifications in the Facebook for BlackBerry application you can disable them from the Facebook website.

As for the Facebook for BlackBerry application, try deleting the application from your device then do a restart of your device. When your BlackBerry is done rebooting go to: http://www.blackberry.com/facebook using your BlackBerry browser then download and install the application. Make sure you configure it as you would like it to be used, then test.

    Hope this helps.

  • Anonymous

    Hello Lisa,

Are you seeing error “connection to the server – (100) code”? This error is often caused by not having the correct BlackBerry service classes; I suggest contacting your Network service provider and have them check to see that they have added the correct BlackBerry service classes (Example: BlackBerry Internet Browsing Service)

    I hope this helps.

  • Rianferrer

    Hello Meowmzkitty,

    What errors are you getting?

You can go to http://www.blackberry.com/facebook on your device browser to install the Facebook for BlackBerry application.

    Hey H_l,

Does your data plan also include internet browsing? If it only includes social networking then you make not have access to the browser to download the applications. I would confirm with your service provider to ensure you have the correct services on your account.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Heather

    Hello Himanshu,

On a computer, log in to your Facebook and go to Account>Privacy Settings and look for Apps and Websites. Click on Edit your Settings and look for Edit Settings next to Apps you Use. Locate Facebook for BlackBerry and revoke access.

After this is completed. log in with your new password on your BlackBerry.

    Cheers!
