BlackBerry App World 1.1 - New Features, More Countries

BBAppWorld_white_lowres_cropped.jpgIt seems it was only yesterday that we opened up a world of possibilities with BlackBerry App World™.  We’re proud to announce the launch of BlackBerry App World 1.1!

BlackBerry App World 1.1 New Features

  • You can now view the Top 25 Free and Top 25 Paid applications!
  • When searching for applications, you can now filter by newest, name, price, vendor, popularity and relevance.

With BlackBerry App World 1.1, you’ll now be able to archive your downloaded and purchased applications on a microSD™ Card.   Click the “Continue Reading” link to read a brief FAQ and step-by-step guide on how to archive applications on your BlackBerry® smartphone.

Where do my apps go when I install them?

Any app you install on your BlackBerry smartphone (from BlackBerry App World or anywhere else) is installed in flash memory.  Each BlackBerry smartphone has a different amount of flash memory – and this is what determines how many apps each device can have installed.  With the new archiving feature, you can store the app on the microSD™ card and restore it when you want to use it.

What will happen to our current applications?

All the apps you’ve downloaded and purchased from BlackBerry App World are currently stored in your “My World” account.  After upgrading to BlackBerry App World 1.1, you can still archive the app – it will just be quickly downloaded again and then stored on your microSD™ card.

How to Archive Applications on your BlackBerry:

In “My World”, you now have the new menu option “Archive”.

When clicked, BlackBerry App World will uninstall the application from the device memory and store it on the microSD™ card.

Some apps require a reboot – some don’t – it all depends on the app.

The icon for the app will still appear where ever you have it (default on 4.5 and below is the home screen, on 4.6 it is the Downloads directory).

The icon will have a green arrow in the bottom corner indicating it’s been archived.

You can click on the icon and you’ll be prompted to see if you want to restore the app.

You can also restore from inside BlackBerry App World.

We're also launching BlackBerry App World today in Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Portugal.  I tried to justify that my team needed to travel to each country for launch - but management didn't agree with that.  No one can blame us for trying. I'm personally excited for Ireland - now all my cousins back home have another reason to love their BlackBerry smartphones.

Keep checking back to Inside BlackBerry - I'll be covering these new features in depth and also explaining how our review system works. For now, don’t forget to download BlackBerry App World 1.1!

  • When will this application be available for Australian users?

    • Hi Harps - keep checking back to Inside BlackBerry - we'll be providing updates on when and where BlackBerry App World will be available next.

      • Hi Alex, can you be a little more specific about when Apps World might be seen in Australia? (Blackberry is continuing to loose ground to Apple whilst we wait.)

        Rick.

  • I'm having problems running App World 1.1. After I installed the new version, it gives me the error of "Blackberry App World is having trouble connecting to the Blackberry App World server. Verify your network connections and try again". I'm using a Curve 8330.

  • How can I be certain that the app was archived to my MicroSD card and not the device? When I archived some of my applications, I get a message that the application was archived to device memory not MicroSD card.

    • Hi webconnoisseur! You'd get the message that the app was archived to device memory if you are using a BlackBerry® Bold™ or Storm™ smartphone. Both of those devices have 1gb of onboard storage that BlackBerry App World archives apps to first. If there was not enough room on the onboard memory, BlackBerry App World will then archive to the micro SD card.

    • I saw something on berryreporter that stated it will automatically back up to your microsd card. However when I looked into this I couldn't really find out if this is true or not. When you click an archived app it only gives you the ability to restore.

      Bill

  • How would I know that my application archived to my MicroSD card? I uninstalled and re-installed, then archived some of the applications that I have on my BB Bold and I got a message that the app was archived to my device memory (instead of MicroSD card/expandable memory).

  • Hi,

my boss is putting me under extreme pressure to make our app a featured app on your app world. PLEASE advise of how to do this?

    i'm on my knees.

    /jennings

  • Hi Jennings - for more information on getting your app in the Featured section of BlackBerry App World, please email: storefrontmanager@rim.com.

  • I just installed App World 1.1.0.11 onto my BB Storm but when I click "My World" the screen says NO DOWNLOADS. I have numerous apps installed on the phone that I have purchased since I bought my Storm. I was curious if App World has to be installed onto the phone before I download apps, (which means I'll have to redownload the apps that are already on the phone), or does App World recognize the apps that are already installed?
Also does the "Archive" menu selection only appear when there are apps listed in "My World" or should it be listed in the menu all the time? Right now "Archive" does not show when I press the menu tab.
    Thanks; Jon

    • Hi Jon - Great question! Only apps that you've purchased in BlackBerry App World will appear on the "My World" screen. The archive option will only appear if you have apps downloaded from BlackBerry App World.

      • This still doesn't answer the question. Do we need to re-install apps in order to archive them? I don't see archive in My World for free apps previously downloaded from AppWorld. I am running OS 4.2.2 on an 8830. I downloaded the new AppWorld 1.1 and I have a 4GB microSD chip which is empty. I re-booted twice.

        • Hi rjsolomon - For free apps previously downloaded with BlackBerry App World 1.0, you will need to redownload in order to archive those free apps.

  • hi

am using the 8900 blackberry and am in kuwait ,,,, when we can use theBlackberry App world here in kuwait ?

  • Is Romania in your plans ?

  • im just wondering once you download this ap, and you download a weather ap or a horoscope ap, do we need a data plan for it to work or internet access?

  • I am having difficulty downloadning App World to my Blackberry Pearl 8100. This is the error message:

Unable to create the loader Active X Control
Please review your security settings and user priviledges on this machine.

I am not familiar with Active X controls so please tell me how to adjust them.

Also, I want to access a free app (opentable.com) once I download App World. How can I avoid setting up a Paypal account (I loathe Paypal).

    Thanks.

  • Hi,
I have a problem with App world on my BlackBerry Storm, when I try to purchase something, after the paypal login, I arrive at the verify user data, than I obtain a system error id:10815 and is not possible to buy something.
I'm in europe with vodafone carier.

    Thanks a lot

  • Hi, just loaded new version onto my Bold & was wondering if there are any apps out there that also needed separate hardware?

  • I successfully downloaded and have been using the new app world for a week or so. I wish I could help some of you out that are having issues but mine is working fine, good luck!

  • Do you have any idea when it'll be possible to get app world from Denmark?
