  • Rob Frenette

Does anyone know if a new OS for the Blackberry 8330 will come out?

I'll pass on this one since Ubuntu is my primary OS. I will gladly test out the Blackberry Handheld Software 6.0 though!!!

  • TechGuru

1.When will this be compatible with Outlook 2010?

    2. What services beside Yahoo! does the sync work with (Google Calenar, Hotmail, perhaps a new BlackBerry-hosted calendar?)

  • Jonathan

Except where is the new Mac updates.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

It's because the BlackBerry is a business class device and consumers just don’t get the phone. I am honest with that remark not poking fun it's just the truth. If you don’t get the BlackBerry you never will. Until RIM changes it's UI you want fun flashy lots of application and cool looking device. You’re a consumer.

  • crichton007

You are probably right. But it is a “platform” that no one wants to develop apps for and has serious performance issues. BB has tried to shift its image to that of a consumer phone without what consumers want. The paid apps are at least 3x more expensive, many requiring reboots for uninstalls and updates, a reboot process that takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, a desktop/wired sync process that is sketchy (But that's the fault of the underlying Intellisync tech which was never that good even for the Palm). I could go on but the BB pros are few and far between and ones that the competition (more than just Android) is adding faster than BB is copying their competition. Things are not good for BB and it doesn't look like they're going to change even as fast as M$FT is and has less money than they do to hang in there. It's the nature of the business and I think that BB is on the wrong side for everyone but their most dedicated corporate clients.

  • Jim Schulte

Really?? I have not heard of anyone who has sucessfully syncd with Outlook 2010. Did you do anything special?

  • Andrey

Thanks everyone for your comments! A couple quick answers to questions that seem to come up –

    - Yep, Outlook 2010 (32bit) PIM Sync is fully supported in Desktop Software v6.0
    - This is the PC version, an update on how the Mac version is coming along will be coming soon. Stay tuned! ;)

  • VeerTheTIGuy

Does anyone know if this works with Office/Outlook 2010 yet??

  • Jacob

I was talking about Nokia. I tried to say “I will use Windows XP and Symbian OS. I will buy a Nokia, with a 40% penetration in the World.”

But thanks for showing me that it a real OS based on its penetration market. Thanks for showing me what I can ask for and what I can post. Thanks for giving me reading adviser.

Apple fanboys taught me how to catch a phone, and RIM fanboys what OS I have to use. It is always nice to read such constructive advice. I've learned a lot today. Good job.

Obviously you missed the whole point of what I was saying. RIM most likely will not produce Desktop Manager first for the MAC OS.. Why would they with only 11% OS penetration on the market and on top of that how many of those 11% are actually BlackBerry users? Likely 10% of those and that’s being nice. So let's make Software for a 1% share of a market…. not a very good ROI. Of course Windows will receive the desktop software first. If your using a MAC then realize you’re a minority so enjoy the Kool-aid while you wait at least you have something to drink.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

They might be failing in the consumer market I agree. Best part is RIM gets to do that. They have a corner of a market that others can try to put their device in use pre existing exchange connectors to get their email form corporate. Problem is none of them (other than MS) can do what RIM has done with BES. They will be years playing catch up to something that is even close. So while RIM stays strong in a business market (the one that really matters in my opinion) then they get to sit there and keep designing consumer devices until they get it right. So while Apple, Google, MS play stay alive in a consumer market just to keep their head above the water then they have to try to join an enterprise/business environment they have no technology to play in.

So my question to everyone is how are they going to do it?

I get sick of people spewing the same old numbers at me “Well I read a online survey that says 70% of BlackBerry users would switch” but no one ever asks questions to those numbers. Where these business users or consumers because that would greatly skew the numbers. If you ask a consumer that is use to makeup and lipstick on their OS of course the first time they use a BlackBerry they would switch. Ask a business users and I bet those numbers would drop way down to below 20%

People are too lazy to do research and look at where these numbers are pulled from or to do proper research. They just want mud to throw. The people that produce these reports do it for a reason, to create controversy and discussion”

  • crichton007

BES is also the Achilles Heel of BlackBerry. When the service goes down then EVERYTHING else on the BB goes down with it. The iPhone is already pursuing the same avenue where they use their servers as the middle-ware to inform the handheld when there is a message rather than having the handheld doing all the pinging. Android does this for Exchange and GMail (including Google Apps, which my business uses). I even have a client that is throwing away (literally) their BES licenses to switch to Android.

If BB relies solely business and continues to lose consumer market share what happens when Apple, Google and Microsoft close the business gap? There goes their profit margin because they'll have to either cut their margins to retain/gain customers or they'll keep their pricing scheme and lose market share.

In this day and age the mobile space is where the competition is. Google is competitive with Apple because they picked up a mobile OS actually started before the iOS was and has pumped resources into that effort. Microsoft's upcoming Mobile OS 7 is the same as BB where its new lipstick on an old pig too. I'm skeptical it will pay off but never count MS out.

My main complaint here is that BB is moving far too slow to remain competitive and while their value of data efficiency is good they have forsaken what people really want which is a vibrant, user friendly GUI that people want to develop for. BB has lost that and BB OS 6 is 3 years late to the game and still hasn't solved the fact that no one wants to develop affordable apps for.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

BES is like any other high end application. If exchange goes down it is a single point of failure. If email is mission critical it's called clustering or VM ware motion and your up time is 100% its no Achilles heal.

This vapor ware that you speak of that will allow iPhones to get data using an intermediate server… How is this server going to pull its information for email. It needs Exchange to give it that information and again Apple has its hands tied cause MS won't let them in bed and never will. So Apple is back to square one unless A) business decides its secure enough to use cloud services like gmail, yahoo or MSN (try explaining that security to a client that wants an NDA and your email is someone@gmail.com) B) come up with their own mail exchanger and build a BES like system that will talk to it with 0 restrictions. Oh and convince IT people around the world to switch from a solid Exchange server that works to something that's still at version 1 or 2

So unless the following happens business that wants secure 100% access to handheld data and security with everything in between like MVS that makes your BlackBerry essentially an office phone with no software needed its built into the OS. How can Apple compete. You speak of the other gentleman going to a different system from BES they cannot have been a very big company to have just thrown away $150 a license software installs, all devices, setup costs to have gotten it up, initial cost of BES etc.. I'd like to know the executive that approved that if it was more then 10 people.

BTW the BlackBerry does nothing for emails its called push the server dose all the notifications to the device.

RIM does not rely solely on Business but it is a major source of revenue and gives them the advantage to be in a solid position and make different phones and applications for both worlds. The get to innovate without the fear that if they fail their done for. Look at what happened to Apple do you know how much this bad press hurt them and the main reason is they only have 1 phone and they screwed it with nothing to fall back on.

Apple has made maybe 10 different phones in the last 10 years most of those all the same design just different hardware on the inside. I think maybe 1 major ohhhh OS upgrade on top of that and RIM is slow? RIM I would guess has over 50 phones in the last 10 years if not more. Each a little different from the next to give users a option. And were slow??? Just because the UI does not look like an iPhone does not mean its behind the time it means its not an iPhone

The programming I cannot answer to. My guess is apps are consumer driven. Program for the device that has more consumers. But that maybe where it starts but we get the same Applications eventually. Apples rant at so many applications will be short lived there number will level off and RIM (and others) will catch up.

I think I just about answered all your comments with real life facts (not vaporware) everyone says RIMs going down RIMs going down. There not going down they just took a huge bite out of the consumer market and some are realizing a BlackBerry is not for them yet. Just because numbers are going down in one sector does not mean the entire company is going down.

RIM will keep probing and making devices until it get one just right and just different from the rest that the consumer market loves it. Others are just trying to not mess up or stumble like Apple did cause it means doom. RIM just shrugs it off like “I meant to do that” Look at the Storm not the most successful phone but nothing happened other then the surge of customers that bought it do like it any more.

    RIM is not going anywhere.

Looks Good.. So when does it come out?

  • Matt

    it really looks great !!

is it outlook 2010 compliant ?

I have 2 computers with Outlook 2010 that I use to sync my BB Storm 2 with, one computer syncs just fine, the other doesnt. Go figure

Do they plan to update the Web Desktop Manager too?

I have yet to be able to sync my Outlook 2010 with my Blackberry 8830. “no message stores” What is the solution?

  • Mimi

Has anyone that was able to install DM 6 able to sync “add-in” data? I use Ascendo Data Vault and need to sync data between laptop and BB 9550. I was able to select an option to “Run Add-ins” in DM 5 but not able to in DM 6. Anyone have any advice?

  • Mimi

It would be really good if the Media Sync allowed for:
    1) syncing of folders that contain the pictures instead of a sync of ALL the pictures in 1 folder
    2) allowing the user to choose which files (pictures or videos) to sync.

Maybe that feature is available in OS 6? But not all the devices “get” to run OS 6. And if a user is running MS 2010 (like I am) DM 6 is a must have. Guess I'll have to stick with manual transferring and/or organizing of files for now. (BTW – I am able to sync with MS2010)

I am an IT manager, we have a BES and it is the worst admin tool I have come across. Everytime we have an Enterprise Activation to do the guys just cring, they know it will take 5 to 10 tries and several hours. Worst platform to administer.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

You do realize your under an NDA and are not to be talking about the product. You are not in a public beta its closed. Read you EULA.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Then you set it up wrong.. Takes 5 minutes to sync and 2 second to create the user. You must be doing something wrong.

Symbian?! Its only has a penetration because its been flaunted for 12yrs by Nokia. Symbian OS BLOWS chunks – S60/UIQ is now dead, and Symbian^3/4 looks like it has a half-shelf life of existence. LG has already dropped it and Samsung also as well. Nokia screwed them over for years, now their returning the favor.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

We're is our support for Mac Desktop Manager.
The current version will ONLY look for specific offerings by the carrier for said supported models. This is a crutch when you want to test the latest & greatest OS – either for headset fix, bug fixes to current functionality, or a slight feature change you prefer or returned that was previously illiminated.

RIM you have internal employees using Mac OS X in the office – natively for coding on OS X or running a VM with Windows. Us end users or those in media relations, internal web design, server support, or graphic design for large corporations use OS X and thus also have a corporately deployed BlackBerry. Why are you singling us out for feature support?! I know Rogers has at least 10 employees internally that use OS X day in and out.

I'll understand if you're awaiting for Office 2011 to be released on OS X later this year, but Notes 8.1 or newer is long available for OSX and just about all iterations have for years. Stop limiting the creative professional – include us as well, please and SOON!

PS Outlook will return to Mac OS X with Office 2011 this Winter (Dec 2010 or Feb 2011).

Also WHERE is the option to download firmwares offered & approved by providers for specific models – you know the ones that give us a choice of firmware versions?!! Rogers has 2 that I know of for the 9700 but I do NOT get to choose which with Desktop Manager for Mac. IF I get the latest version and something just doesn't work right, you're license agreement allows me to downgrade to a supported & officially released OS for my HandHeld supported by the provider – yet I CANNOT because you do NOT offer .bbb files on your servers. Why can I not keep the download on my Mac if its issued directly from Desktop Manager for Mac?! What if I have a kernel panic and I need to restore from Time Machine – I have to wait all over again for the download? What if I'm not at home, nor have a highspeed connection? Heck your BB's do NOT offer wireless tethering over wlan+3G and wired usually is not efficient.

    See where I'm getting at?
Offer Mac OS X users full support on BlackBerry Desktop Manager going forward please!! Implement dual development.

how can i get tit i cant dowload it from the beta zone bcouse im from colombia

Good question, re Outlook 2010. ATT tech support AND the Blackberry site both state that Outlook 2010 is NOT supported. I have not been able to sync my Blackberry for two weeks and this is a major problem.

I like the new look of the software. I also hope that I can, once again, have warm fuzzy interaction with Outlook 2010. How can I get permission to test this beta software

WHERE IS BLACKBERRY 6? TIRED OF WAITING FOR THIS. CAN'T SYNC MY OUTLOOK 2010

  • TheRedDragon

I tend to agree with the “New lipstick on an old pig” comment. I wish that RIM would come up with a REAL desktop application that would 1) work with Windows 7, 64-bit, 2) not depend on any variant of Outlook, and 3) be a real replacement for the functions provided in the now-abandoned-in-place Palm desktop application. Ideally, the user would be able to interact with the desktop application to add calendar entries, memos, contacts, to-do list entries and the like and have them sync with the BlackBerry either by USB cable of Bluetooth.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

    1) My Desktop manager works fine with Windows 7 64x
    2) RIM is not dependent on Outlook but knows people might want to sync their data form it as well as many other mail products.
    3) The BlackBerry does all this already

    Any more questions or comments?

HELP, Blackberry! What is the delay with the 6.0 software? I cannot synch my phone with my computer because I have Outlook 2010, and I'm just about ready to go with a different phone. This is ridiculous!

  • http://loreworld.tumblr.com/ Lore

    2) …as well as many other mail products. Thunderbird perchance?

  • Laura Farias

How ???? My Outlook 2010 Profile is not shown on sync configuration settings. I´ve done everything, install, unistall, predefined profile, software actualizations….I have a BB9700. Please help !!!!

  • Patrick

I am relatively new to the Blackberry world and I cannot get Outlook 2010 to sync on my pc using Windows 7 64 bit. It shows the 'no message stores' error described above. Are there settings that I should change to cure this? If you can make it run on your set up I can only imagine that I need to adjust settings somewhere. If you have time to let me know if you think it is straightforward I would really appreciate a reply.

    Regards,

    Patrick

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I can only assume that Desktop Manager 6 will take care of these issues. Desktop Manager works fine for me but I do not Sync with Outlook 2010. Just be patient, using cutting edge software has these draw backs. I personally would downgrade to 2007 until there is support for 2010 x64. Outlook 2010 only came out 1 month ago. I would think that RIM would have done so pre beta work but again they do this for free so it is kind of hard to shank your fist at them.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

No you enter them in outlook and they Sync (once outlook 2010 x64 works) Why reinvent the wheel if there are already solid fully featured applications like Outlook?

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

You will change a phone because you are running x64 bit software that is known to have issues with being delayed for drivers support and software? Then you complain that its RIMs fault? Do your research before you buy. You cannot go cutting edge hardware and software and expect RIM to develop for this first. It will be out soon have patience.

  • Patrick

thanks for the reply. I think given my usage I will input manually for now and then see when the Desktop software comes along if it fixes the glitch. So far for me the best thing about Blackberry is that other users do not want to spend hours showing you photos etc.as an excuse to show off their clever page turning tricks which seems to be endemic in all iphone users!

    Patrick

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I imagine that as soon as the device is released then the Desktop Manager will also come out.

Why do they not make a program to work with the 64-bit architecture fully knowing this has been the biggest problem. The new version DOES NOT work with Office 2010 64-bit. Any reasonable workarounds anyone? how about a new version 6 that works with Office 2010 64-bit, that would be great!

  • chuckheston

When anyone posts anything that questions or even remotely criticizes RIM, there you are, jumping in to both defend RIM and inform the poster that they are either stupid or doing something wrong. Constantly repeating that “everything works fine” gets pretty boring, especially when it is not true.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

No I post when people don’t know anything they are talking about and I correct them with the correct information. Gets tiring having people post the same thing over and over.

NOT HAPPY – I ended up spending several hours trying to get my organizer synced. In moving from 5. version to 6. version it did not pick up my Outlook settings. I moved back and forth several times between versions and continued to get error messages. Between multiple reboots and attempts at both version, I finally got the window to show up that allowed me to pick my organizer settings. I got a variety of error codes in the process (0x80043aaa, 0x80043ade).

I like the new interface, but the transition left much to be desired in the sync organizer arena

what happened to the wi-fi sync option?

  • Rob

I was very happy with teh last version until one day a little box popped up asking me to download the new version.

    1. Now I only see one calendar on Outlook, although i can see the others on BB9700.

    2. It has repeated my address entries in one line after the oiginal address entry in contacts.

I am beside myself!!! after many yaers of syncing all sorts of phones without issue this happens, now my data is a mess and all over the place rather than on both devices.

Really not sure what to do next!

  • ecuthbert

    Thank you.

    Hello,

BLOODY STUPID. your new beta thing didn't ASK if i wanted it, did it? no, it just presented itself as a normal “update”. which now refuses to recognize my phone, says it's new and has never been back-up'ed or synced, and it won't open media options. how am i supposed to get my photos out of that phone now?
that's right, i'll have to uninstal the stupid beta, that i didn't ask for in the first place, and then i'll have to instal the normal desktop manager. thank's for the hassle, blackberry.

  • Robert

I have a phone that syncs with the best Desktop application ever developed. I can view every appointment at a glance by simply placing my pointing device on a date. I can instantly bring up a record of all past appointments with a client along with all the notes I took during that meeting. I can edit not only a single instance or All instances (including past dates and all the notes I had) but present and future recurrences without losing all my past changes. I can even sync when the internet connection in our office is down, and I can work on my calendar without going online. I've been researching BB & I Phone. Every time I'm tempted to switch, I ask the salesperson in the store a question such as “Can it do this (I show it what the Centro does)” and the salesperson looks at me and says something like, “Wow! Where did you get that cool app?” I tell them it is not an “App.” It is a standard feature with Palm. What I've learned is that there is no reason to “pay more and get junk.” There is no other calendar that even comes close to doing what the Palm Desktop does and it even integrates Memos, Tasks, Photos, and Address Book into one package. The Centro phone is now four years old and has never given me a moments trouble. It has it all. Both the phone and the desktop application are simple and time proven devices that have never let me down. I will therefore continue to rely on my Palm OS 6 Desktop and my little Centro.until they wear out or will no longer function with some problem plagued future version of Windows. When that happens I will retire.

I need some help. I cannot sync with the new 6 and my Verizon Bold 9650. I am missing the organizer screen as you have it up there. I have it, but there are no options for 'select organizer data to synchronize” the only options I have(with my phone connected or not) is the 'synchronization settings” and the 2 tabs under it. But nothing happens when I try clicking on these tabs. I haven't gotten a response from the support forums, maybe someone here can assist?

  • Toria127

go to add/remove programs. if you see a program “click to run” then your outlook is not installed on your hard drive and is running virtually. this causes you registry to not be edited properly. so you have to install your office all over again not using click to run. then the registry will be edited and BB will be able to find Outlook.
