Announcing the BlackBerry Torch 9800

Today, I am thrilled to introduce the world’s first smartphone with a BlackBerry® keyboard and full touch screen – the BlackBerry® Torch™ 9800.

It comes with the new BlackBerry 6 operating system and there is a lot to be excited about. BlackBerry 6 has something for everyone and personally, I am particularly enjoying the new universal search and auto-wrap text zoom features.

We spent a lot of time talking with customers, testing and re-testing the software to make sure we could deliver the new features users want without losing any important aspects of the user experience that our customers already know and love. BlackBerry 6 delivers a stunning visual design and the teams here have done an incredible job implementing the amazing array of enhancements, including our new WebKit-based web browser which was first previewed at MWC earlier this year.

With the new BlackBerry Torch smartphone, we also believe our hardware team has delivered the best combined touch-qwerty experience available, seamlessly incorporating our signature BlackBerry keyboard and precision trackpad in a striking design that simply feels great in your hand. One of the things I love the most about the BlackBerry Torch design is the way it allows me to easily transition between using the touch screen, trackpad and keyboard interfaces. I can switch between them and interact with the handset and applications in a very natural way.

The BlackBerry Torch is also the first BlackBerry smartphone to ship with our new web browser and we invested a substantial amount of time and effort to engineer a WebKit-based browser that can operate quickly, beautifully and efficiently. In fact, Peter Rysavy today released a new study reporting on the efficiency of the BlackBerry 6 Browser with respect to data usage. We continue to believe that efficiency is an important advantage for our customers and an imperative for the wireless industry.

BlackBerry 6 is scheduled to be first introduced to the market with the BlackBerry Torch on August 12, but I know many of you are also wondering about support for existing BlackBerry smartphones. I am happy to report that BlackBerry 6 will be available in the months ahead (pending carrier certifications) on some of our leading smartphones, including the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 3G 9100, BlackBerry® Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700.

At RIM we have a long history of building groundbreaking technology, and we are passionate about our products – each day, thousands of RIM employees are focused on enhancing our software, services and smartphones in order to continue meeting your changing wants and needs. The launch of the BlackBerry Torch with BlackBerry 6 is one of the most significant launches in our history and this amazing new smartphone brings together many of RIM’s core strengths into one fluid and superior user experience.

I hope you will be as delighted with the BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry 6 as we are, because we are very proud of these accomplishments and because we really do love what we do.

Same feeling here. What about my Curve? Which is a great phone and I love! Why not an update for that one as well. 7 out of 7 BB owners in my regular BBM circle have Curve and Storm. We all love our phones! To leave us out isn’t cool. We all have phones less than a year old. Two of us have phones 1-2mos old! Hmph.

I know that development has been canned for OS 6 on the 9550…but you should reconsider. At least release the webkit browser for OS 5 phones…otherwise you will lose many customers!

Love it. I have a Blackberry 9700. I love the speed of navigating by trackpad and typing with a proper keyboard; but the Torch looks amazing. Would be lovely to have a bigger touch screen just for web browsing really.

As a phone on its own this to me looks superior to the iPhone. Blackberry’s next mission is I think to foster more in the way of Apps. Having said that all the most important apps (Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, Amazon, eBay) are already there… Still I like the fact that if you’re a entrepreneur in your bedroom you feel iOS is a real opportunity. Not sure that can be said yet for Blackberry OS. We’ll see…

Oh and does anyone know if the new browser supports Flash 10.1? (Maybe that would be a great shortcut to get home brewed apps going on Blackberry).

I’ve screen through the specification for this phone & there is no indication whether this phone supports HSPA. Even GSM Arena has stated that BB 9800 only supports up to 384Kbps. Is it true?

  • Anonymous

i agree i was hoping the storm 2 would be mentioned. It’s the only BB touch screen phone on verizon. I’m not even sure if there is another BB touch screen phone out yet besides the storm 1 and 2 in the states and now the torch. I’m guessing and hoping the storm will be supported since the phone is similar in touch screen function minus the full keyboard.

DON”T switch unless you want to use the torch as a paper weight
AT&T useless as a carrier, NEVER had so many dropped calls etc. Thankfully my contract is almost over!!!

My wife had a BB bold. After a week she returned it. It took ages to navigate the apps. It wasn’t intuitive. Trying to access the camera, she almost chunked it in a pond in frustration.

In contrast, on the return drive with an iphone, she’d figured out the apps she couldn’t with the BB.

If you need to bust out the user guide for basic operations with any tech, there are some serious design issues.

    Hopefully the Torch has evolved.

I thought Blackberry was above the Iphone shenanagans. I would love to have this new phone to replace my Storm with, but BB has turned me off with being AT&T exclusive. AT&T sucks in the Aug, GA market. Guess I’ll stay with verizon and maybe switch back to Motorola and get a Droid X. Maybe BB will see the light.

Why are you whining. The leaks have been all over the net for 6 months. If you decided you have 0 ability to wait for the next device. Don’t blame RIM cause you got a phone before another came out. Do your research. What do you expect RIM to take all its phones off the market4 months before releasing a new device just so you don’t buy and old one?? Get with it man. Seriously man use your head.. I’m not trying to be mean but if you cant help yourself then were not going to do stuff for you.

BlackBerry 6 will be out when it is out, until RIM says “We will not support x, y, and z device” zip the lip bunch of consumer whiners. Do some research before yelling at RIM. The carriers are who you should be talking to cause even some of them still don’t have available 5.0 for devices that other carries have had over 2 years now. They have to go through certification process and the carriers internal team has to approve it first before they release it. RIM has over 10 phones released in the last year so were not like Apple that only has 4 phones total. It takes a lot more time to figure out that many devices. Once BlackBerry 6 has been released for certain device you’ll get it and note before then.

I take a tone cause people are clueless..

    1. they ask the same question over and over and don’t see the same question has been asked 1000 times already with no answer. Well of course they want to know when it will be released but do you really think RIM is going to answer that question only if asked so many times?

    2. no I don’t think they are cause this is what the people wanted.. they want more phones different styles different price points so what do they expect?

    3. They will take care of them but after the OS is done for certain phones!

    4. Yes the device lasts with the OS it was designed for. It’s nice to get updates along the way but I don’t expect them all the time

    5. RIM is growing and sometimes you have to make a big step and leave devices behind. Yes the people that get left behind might be pissed but they would still be pissed with a slow OS cause they crammed it onto their older hardware.

Very impressed with the phone and the software.

Think BB can learn a lot from Apple re marketing and product delivery. When Apple did IPhone4 the Version 4 software was made immediately available.

BB is making the same mistake LinkedIn did. If you're gonna do something, do something, don't keeping telling us it will be done (Feb and now Aug re BB6) and then do it piece meal, do it properly, i.e. on all your current devices!

    Dear RIM,

I really like your phones and your technology. Especially the accessibility with your phones is a great feature for me! Since I bought one of your high-end phones, you know the Storm2, I was hoping to get an OS upgrade. When I first saw OS6 I was really excited, especially about the browsing experience and media integration. However, I think this announcement really sucks. The new device and OS are great though, but why isn't it compatible with older devices, such as my Storm2? It should be possible to use a bit of user allocted space as (swap) memory, thus making enough room for the older device with 256MB. If I am not getting BB6, I feel like I have been left in the cold. So RIM, Mike, or someone that is reading this. optimize BB6 so older devices can run it.

    With kind regards,
    Alex

  • Joolie

Thanks for the update. You mentioned the 9700 would get OS 6. Do you mean the currently released 9700, or is there another 9700 in the works?

  • Sunfell

I'm hoping that the Curve 8530 will be included in the updateable smartphones. I adore my Curve, and would love to have the new OS running on it. And in a couple of years, I hope that Sprint will have whatever version of the Torch is available. I am realizing I need a bigger screen AND a discrete keyboard.

    Good job, RIM.

  • Violetkim1

    which carrier?

  • PrestonHymas

That is what I just told them I twitter. I bought the Storm because I figured they would update the software and eventually it would be a great phone. Well that never happened. I'm switching to the Droid X as well.

  • Steffen

I found this link that says the Torch will be coming to Rogers
    http://redboard.rogers.com/2010/blackberry-torch-9800-coming-to-rogers/

One question for RIM though…why didn’t you upgrade the processor to 1GHz? Is BB6 going to be so efficient that we don’t need a better processor?

  • Guest

Is about time Blackberry comes out with a new OS. BB6 looks promising, however I'm getting a new android phone, after 6 years with BB is time for a change!

  • PrestonHymas

It is just a slap in the face that you don't include the Storm in your update. It clearly needs one. Everything on the storm is choppy and outdated, but I wasn't getting rid of it because I figured an update would come and make everything look refreshed and refined. Apparently that will never happen. Goodbye Black Berry, I'm heading over to camp Android and will never buy another Black Berry device EVER again.

  • Kristiniverson

Oh my goodness. I am salivating over this phone. I have had the 9700 since the day it came out and don't necessarily need a new phone but boy, this is making me want to switch carriers to have this…YUMMY!

  • emir

it works on 9700 yes ı am glad to hear that. because those rumors were making me crazy!

  • Emacdave

Doesn't look like Storm 2 is supported for OS 6.0 which is a big suprise for a phone released less than 12 months ago. Disappointing to say the least. Android here we come…….

  • Billyf431

getting better but wheres the apps. Both iPhone and Droid have apps blackberry doesn’t. i was hoping black berry would blow me away with a brand new phone designs at least some sort of app store. plus now they have the whole problem with possibly releasing user data. oh and back to the designs it looks like the crappy phone my sister got like really the design looks horrible. thats really all i have to say.

  • http://twitter.com/domi994 Alberto D.

its not fair to us, whom bought your Storm 2 when it was release.. some of us. like me just got 1 now.. with less than a month.. and you guys now decided to just trough it away from your new OS its not fair.. phone does not have e year without been release…

if the carriers dont want to make the OS.. let it leak out and we will decided if we want or not.. there is a lot of people who want to have this OS in their STORM 2… leaked for all those developers that are outthere.. just dont focus on the carrier..think about the costumers who bough that phone just cuz its brand blackberry…

It doesn't support Flash initially, but Flash will probably be coming in the end of 2010.

I have the bold 9700! I'm soo happy xDxD! Thnx god!

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

You're right Matt. I also have a Storm2 and I am quite disappointed and a bit angry at RIM for not telling us wether the Storm2 is going to be supported. And if it isn't going to be supported, that would be just cold….

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

You will get OS6 (probably) so you can stick with your Bold 9700. At least if you don't need the touchscreen.

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

The Canadian BlackBerry site is already updated with information about the Torch. Availability on the Tour (9630) is uncertain, same as on the Storm2-series.

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

The Curve2 (8520/8530) has the same amount of memory as the Storm2 and Bold 9700. However there isn't that much screen estate, so it isn't that suprising that OS6 isn't supported. Also the Curve2 8520 started with OS4 to begin with, so those users already had an upgrade to a newer OS.

  • BESAdminMicCheck

ATT? Seriously? This is like putting a concept sports car prototype on a 100 year old Sudanese Navy vessel, sailing that vesel around the world and expecting not to loose the car.

Bad choice of carriers RIM. iPhone is struggling with that service already. Why would you want to do this to yoursleves? Ive enjoyed being a BES admin but you guys are killing it. Activesync is cheaper, it works with many devices and security is better than ebfore on Exchange 07/10.

You needed to hit a homerun but your chopice of providers will limit you. Was fun while it lasted!

  • Kosta

I agree: the phone is nice, but it's not enough of a breakthrough – both in marketing and in the product itself – to make any significant dent in the iPhone's success. Blackberry phones really need to focus on what makes them unique and likable with their core users (serious professionals who don't have time for a toy phone) and improve on that before adding frills to (hopefully but, in this case, unsuccessfully) snag mainstream users and younger users who are considering an iPhone 4. Specifically:

    - Provide a battery that's the best battery out there (if you're in business, you don't want a phone that you have to charge all the time…that's a weakness of the iPhone). The Torch has a better battery than the iPhone 4, but not by much, and there are many smartphones out there with much better batteries. In a nutshell: the Torch should have had twice the battery standby time and talk time of the iPhone 4.
    - Build bridges to future users: e.g., why doesn't the Torch have a full-size, side-sliding keyboard like those found on quick messaging phones like the Samsung Corby? A lot of users, myself included, have stayed away from Blackberry precisely because the cramped keyboard doesn't appeal to use for serious texting/e-mailing (and on-screen keyboards don't cut it, either, unless they're in landscape orientation). Today's teenagers are tomorrow's professionals.
    - Really get serious with the selection of quality apps – especially those for productivity.

  • Storm2 User

I purchased two Storm 2 devices knowing full well that a new OS was imminent, but I assumed that you would obviously make that device support your flagship product. My plan was to check out the new OS and if I liked it as much as I thought I would, I'd purchase the next product (and the Torch does look like a great product). That won't be happening now however and I'll be moving on to Android, and advising everyone I've been converting to BB to do the same. You treat your customers with respect and you get loyalty. Pretty much everyone who purchased and still have a Storm or Storm 2 fought through the negative press and believed that ultimately, you guys must know what you're doing. To now stick two fingers up at us and tell us we were stupid to waste our money is unacceptable.

If you paid more attention to those people who have stuck with you while others moved ahead, maybe you would have a higher portion of customers looking to upgrade to your products. As it is, those die-hard users amongst us will look at this and realise that getting a device that just makes the grade isn't good enough. Its time to get a device with market leading processor, screen resolution, screen technology, fully customisable and open source. Hello Android….

  • Anon

Thanks Mike. Hopefully the current BlackBerry users see enough excitement in this to stay with BlackBerry when they are ready for an upgrade.

It would be nice if RIM would at least make the Webkit browser available to users of older models.

  • Gscreeton

Like the new OS and phone…too bad you decided to sell it thru ATT only. They have enough problems with iPhone. I am a die hard BB user, but I am getting tired of these exclusive contracts that the phone co's in the U.S. are strangling us with! RIM – get a clue. If you want to sell phones, stop the exclusivity with crap providers! And you wonder why Android is taking away your mkt share?

I was waiting on the new BB and OS, but now since you dealt your hand with ATT, I guess I have to finally venture outside of the BB world and look at alternatives with my provider (obviously NOT ATT).

  • bb loyalist

Yeah! atleast give the storm 2 users the new webkit for the browser. Honestly, i am fine with staying on OS 5 as long as the browser is faster with the new webkit being used for OS 6. Please give us the WEBKIT! you owe it to your loyal BB users.

  • wrong carrier

This looks like a dream phone – but when I saw AT&T was the exclusive provider it made me say “too bad I guess I will never get to try this phone.” AT&T's network is so terrible that its not worth it – even for a cool phone like this.

  • http://digg.com/users/OmegaWolf Silver Fang

RIM, heed my advice and make this phone available on more carriers than just AT&T. AT&T's network is terrible, with bad reception and slow data. Also, they cap data at 2 GB per month, which is hardly even worth it. There are many other carriers such as T-Mo, Sprint and Verizon that this phone would be better suited for.

  • Johngardner58

I don't have any problems with BB and AT&T sometimes I wonder if it is only the iPhone people who have AT&T problems. I very seldom have a dropped call.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Good so long… people who do not realize a company would never create an OS first before having a flag ship device to put it on does not deserve have such a device. It was an announcement today only for the BlackBerry Torch with BlackBerry 6 on it. It was not a announcement for what devices are going to get 6. Plus do you think RIM is dumb? oh BTW don't buy our new phone just retro fit your old one for free. They will dangle the carrot first get people to upgrade and make the OS release second.

Have fun on your Android add me to your BBM when you get there…… oh wait thats right sorry.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I have a Blackberry Storm and cannot wait to get rid of it. Worst phone I have ever owned. Putting only out on AT&T network!?!?!?! are you kidding? Worst network ever. Once I can upgrade I cannot get to the store fast enought to switch over to an Android phone, more specifically the Droid X. Worst designed phone ever, can't imagine this one being any better considerin it will be on AT&T and made by Blackberry.

  • Pat

New articles are talking about the phone and not the network. Iphone is notorious for having poor phone reception and dropped calls (even in metro areas) on the AT&T system, why does RIM think that Torch on this same system will be any different? Would like to hear from others who have BB on the AT&T system about the issues of phone reception and dropped calls. I've had every Iphone generation but the reception is ruining business and I must switch to Verizon asap although I'd be willing to try the Torch if it 1) was not on AT& T or 2) had superior phone reception on AT&T the likes that we have not seen with the Iphone

  • Ontheporch86

what makes verizon so wonderful? I've seen their phones drop calls like any other network. Are people just going off of what the commercials say? AT&T is as reliable as anyone else. how can people who want to multi-task and handle business prefer a network that won't let you surf and talk @ the same time? if you need to dictate something from an email quickly are you going to pull out an entirely separate device? How long is the almighty Verizon going to wait to address that? This is going to be a great phone on a great network.

  • PJM

What about the Storm 2? I bought two of these ‘top of line’ phones from Telus in the past three months. If RIM is dead-heading me on the new OS not more than 8 months into the launch of the Storm 2, I will switch all phones to Android and never buy RIM hardware again. Please tell me that CNET is incorrect.

“A lot of users, myself included, have stayed away from Blackberry precisely because the cramped keyboard doesn't appeal to use for serious texting/e-mailing”

You sir, are an idiot. The MAIN reason everyone who uses a Blackberry keeps with them is that their Qwerty thumb keyboard layout is THE best means of text interfacing. There is nothing on any other phone that is anywhere close to the speed of the Blackberry way.

  • Sowen85770

great love the look and option for qwerty keyboard… to bad you guys chose AT&T. I hate them with passion and will not switch! I just hope iPhone 4 doesn't come to Verizon before the torch! otherwise bye bye to BB. I can't wait to get rid of my current storm!

  • Pds436

Look who's sounding like a commercial now! Give me a break!

  • T Fincham

As a loyal Blackberry user on T-Mobile network for over 5 years, I was excited about the new Blackberry Torch. Much disappointed that this is exclusive to ATT. You just lost a Blackberry customer because I will get another phone.

  • pat

I have AT&T and Iphone. I have chronic reception problems and dropped calls in downtown Boston, Manhatten, and at home 30 mins north of Boston. What area are you in as I've been curious to hear from people who have BB and ATT, whether these phone reception issues are also problematic. I'm on the verge of going BB with Verizon. I'd consider the Torch if it weren't for the ATT issues which have been there since the first generation to date.

You're adopting a fairly patronising tone throughout this thread, but you seem blind to things Blackberry have done wrong.

    1. If the OS is to be released on the Storm or Storm 2, they need to answer people. It's no good you saying this is just the phone launch and the OS might come later – if that were true it just means they've botched their big launch horribly, judging by the comments here.

    2. Perhaps Blackberry are making too many devices if they're unable to support the flagship devices they're still selling on their web-site. You see this over and over in the tech world. As you say RIM is not Apple, but this makes them look exactly like Apple in the early '90s.

    3. A recent poll shows a lower percentage of Blackberry customers intend to buy another Blackberry than either Android or iPhone. Existing customers clearly need a bit more love right now.

    4. Longevity should be the reason to buy a device by a company that does device+OS. Android suffers because manufacturers don't upgrade to Google's latest version. This, Blackberry should have in its favour and they are getting it wrong if they haven't worked than one out.

    5. If the Storm 2 can't support the latest OS, then fine-tune the OS or only support certain features. Also, if their hardware & software teams can't get their act together to make sure the next version of the OS works on the next device – in advance of either – then where's the vision? Where's the coordination at Blackberry?

  • Rahul

Can someone tell me when will it be released with Verizon?

  • JasonS

Why such a low screen resolution? I would have thought that the whole philosophy behind this phone is to appeal to the market that has been dominated by the iPhone and other models, i.e. the market of those to whom style and user experience is every bit as important as functionality.

The way an OS looks and responds is 100% important in this day and age. Unless a phone is super smooth, fast and responsive, it's going to tank. And that goes for the visual appearance too. The iPhone 4 has an amazing screen at a far higher resolution. The resolution they've given the Torch is hysterically low, more like something which would have impressed 3 or 4 years ago. I'm sorry, but people are going to judge this phone on looks and if it doesn't have a screen that's comparable with the iPhone then it's going to be one huge flop. Hardcore BB business types won't find enough reason here to upgrade anyway, and young multimedia users won't be impressed enough by the visual experience to consider this over the iPhone or Droid. Can't believe they've decided upon this screen resolution after everything else looked so promising.

  • Johndavis1sb

As a lover of the Storm with Verizon Wireless, RIM has made a huge mistake by granting an exclusive to AT&T, acknowledged as the worst cellular network in the US. As you will see, people will go to AT&T because of the exclusive rights for the iphone, but most people, if forced into going to AT&T will choose the iphone over the Torch. You would be smart to get it to Verizon as possible before you lose people to another smart phone with their own carrier. Wake up!

  • Enterprise User

From Canada, and very disappointed about this announcement.

First off, the screen resolution is at least 3 years out of date. As nice as I’m sure it will still look, it’s not a competitive attribute having an out-dated screen when that appears to be the main selling point differentiating the 9800 from the 9700. You won’t be wowing many existing enterprise users, and you won’t be competitive enough to entice multimedia new users to sign on.

Second, your choice of wireless band is a shame. Only the terrible providers in N.A. seem to support this new phone which means I, and many others I know, will not be getting it. Aside from the relatively low screen res, I was still really excited about getting this phone, and it was a huge letdown finding out that I would have to switch carriers to get it. Sorry, but a few bells and whistles is not worth it.

Hopefully you at least bring BB6 out for the 9700 carrier’s sooner than later; We need WebKit fast — your current customer base is starting to lose faith…

  • CloudStrife

FYI, Blackberry is the LEADING SMARTPHONE in the US. And recently, ANDROID took iPHONES 2nd position leaving the stupid iPHONE in 3rd. So yeah, no worries, you can touch your BlackBerry smartphone all you want, those signal bars aren't going anywhere ;) Get a life, there's an app for that.

I have AT&T and a BB Curve 8310 and I rarely drop calls. I live about 30 minutes south of Boston and travel to the city and to Prov often and I always have service. Everyone says AT&T is horrible but I've never had a major issue with them. BB Torch, here I come!!

RIM should be able to update those devices and keep its costumers. Hope there will be and update, might not a full one, just as apple does on its devices like iphone and ipod touch

  • Progers_50

Me To!! Rim is taking too long and looks like they are going over to AT&T since Verizon is promoting Droids. Rim is too secretive and should let their BB users know what is coming so they may stick around to see it or get it. I’m really tired of waiting. From Storm to DroidX now. If you want the Storm users to stay you better start dealing cards. Since the OS5 update last year my Storm1 is ok but you left us without anymore updates. Boy, 6 mos. goes by and your phone is antique.

Screw the iPhone. Are these people serious with the comparisons? This phone is pure sex for me. It’s got the touch screen I wanted (Storm sucked) and the tactile keyboard for my man-sized, non-manicured fingers. It’s still business but it’s got some fun to it. I have a 16gb mem card filled with music and pictures ready for this device as well as a backup file. My contract is up with AT&T so I am due for an upgrade anyway.

  • http://www.anthonytaurus.com Anthony Taurus

I still have my 9000. The only time my calls drop is when my friend tells me he accidentally hit the button.

A lot of people blame AT&T because that’s what the marketing over at Apple make people believe. AT&T can’t be honest about the iPhone because somehow it became their flagship phone. It was a mistake to not dog the iPhone for the junk that it is. Now, AT&T’s rep is severely damaged. It’s really not cool. There is nothing wrong with AT&T.

Jobs concentrated so heavily on form that function suffered.

  • http://twitter.com/domi994 Alberto D.

You aree right.. i couldnt wait to buy a new phone..
but i did my research checking the spec of the phone that are getting the OS 6.0
the Storm 2 9550 got the same and more than the Perl 3G for example…

im agree with my friend Chris here.. they can not just leave this up to the carriers to make the OS 6 or if they want to test it or not.. they should push them to do it…

otherwise is RIM the one that suffers…

  • CS

What a mistake to release this device on AT&T. You really stuck it to your loyal users on Verizon. You give Verizon junk touch screens and then when it looks like you finally get it right you go to AT&T. I guess my next Verizon BB will now have to be an Android phone from Motorola.

  • Roller

“why doesn’t the Torch have a full-size, side-sliding keyboard like those found on quick messaging phones like the Samsung Corby?” — Kosta

It’s because side-sliding keyboards like those in Corby are too huge. Your fingers have to travel across greater distances when typing. On the contrary, the berries have the most convenient smaller keyboards meant for SERIOUS texting/emailing. Serious texters from where you’re not from have developed the finger rolling technique when typing, our fingers don’t have to goto a key-hunt-press, we just roll the thumbs to the adjacent key, this is serious efficiency.

When people like us do happen to occasionally use iPhones , we use the soft key pad at PORTRAIT orientation rather than landscape. For the very same reason of finger movement efficiency , our fingers only need to travel less distance than compared to people from your part of the world.

  • Johnytop7

This phone is nice but it will not make or save BB from being a stock like MOT. The release today was lackluster and boring. They hardly have apps for it. I have a BB and looking to replace but only having it with ATT was a big mistake thanks BB you just helped me, Android here I come.

O H M Y G O D ! Who ARE all of you people that complain about AT&T? Are there just that many more bratty people in Boston (or wherever you are) that just whine about technology? For all of you who complain about dropped calls, chill out! The rest of the country (and probably many people in your town) don’t have any problem. For every one of you who say AT&T sucks, there are 100 people that don’t have a problem. I have had AT&T for eight years. I have had Motorolas, Samsungs, Sonys and now Blackberry cell phones. I have lived and traveled in all the major metro cities in MA, N.Y., N.J., PA, FL, (even Alaska!) as well as several countries in Central America, and Europe.
    NOT ONCE HAVE I HAD A DROPPED CALL OR BAD COVERAGE – N E V E R !
I keep my batteries (yes, I usually carry two) well charged every day because I make calls at all times of the day. The worst issue I ever had was waiting an extra 30 seconds for a placed call to connect – big deal! The world is not perfect – technology is not perfect – so stop acting like a spoiled brat and realize that every aspect of your life shouldn’t be centered around how fast you can get your phone to work. Your father managed his life without a cell phone, call-waiting nor caller ID – the latest phone technology of his generation was touch tone!

  • Kosta

Dear JustTheFacts: I know about a dozen people at my workplace who use a Blackberry and a few dozen others who use other phones – iPhones, other smartphones, quick messaging phones, etc. Some love typing on a Blackberry keyboard, others love typing on a quick messaging phone with a full keyboard, and still others like using Swype on an on-screen keyboard. Basically, different people have different preferences. I know people, like you, who swear by the Blackberry keyboard and don’t want it to change one bit…but I also know others who have a Blackberry who have expressed a longing for a bigger, roomier keyboard or a Swype-type on-screen keyboard. Given enough practice, one can become a very fast typist on many a different phone, I’m sure.

Before you go around calling people idiots, it might help to take a few moments and consider that your own preferences aren’t necessarily universal “facts.” What about people with tendonitis…is a cramped Blackberry keyboard best for them? What about people who are simply accustomed to a roomy, quick messaging keyboard…wouldn’t it make sense for RIM to reach out to those users – many of whom are teenagers or young adults – and at least offer a similar keyboard on one of their phones?

Perhaps what RIM should have done as part of today’s announcement of the Torch is think outside the box and do something really creative by offering not just one but two or three new models – each of which is targeted to a particular demographic – instead of the “one size fits all” philosophy taken by Apple with its singular bar format. This is not about pride a la “Blackberry is better than iPhone” or vice versa; rather, it’s about convincing people that there’s a Blackberry for each and every one of them that they’ll love…like the logo claims.

  • Liblog

What I want is a Touch Screen functionality on a Bold 9700 model. Is it anytime soon? I just don't like sliding functionality and it's not giving a good customer experience.

I am evaluating Blackberry a long long time and i know some Top Senior Executives who rely on my opinion. These People are used to the Blackberry Keyboard since it's first appearance. They did not even tested the Blackberry Storm, as it is a pain… pressing the whole screen down will be great for getting fat fingertips but it is far away from being comfortable. Anyhow Blackberry is a standard and the Iphone is not in the same Class. Anyhow, the best feeling in a small Keyboard i experienced with the Nokia E71. This would be one of the only phones comparable with the Blackberry in terms of function and features. But more important is, the Blackberry delivers Emails nearly everywhere without hassle, this is based on the special protocols, RIM has developed with their Server Suite. And this is a Feature, Apples Iphone can not beat. The Iphone is a Mainstream Phone, its Keyboard is “Keyboring”… but the with beeing one of the first capacitive touch screen phones on the market, they have the advantage of the APP Developers who developed all these fantastic freak tools for the Iphone… so i own an Iphone for fun use… but i must say if you are using Skype on the road, the Iphone is one of the best to stay in touch as it is fast enough… Skype on Symbian is far slower and the battery gets sucked away fast…
The new Blackberry is the first convergent device… using Touchscreen, slideable Keybord and a now finally streamlined OS / interface… once this will be available in Europe, it will be very successful. I am not a big fan of the centralized and in-transparent blackberry software, as we remember the French government kicked blackberry out, as intelligence services worldwide have hidden access to this device… and this could only be made possible by a cooperation between the government and RIM.
So i strongly recommend not to use Blackberry in Banking an Finance… I recon this was the main reason for the ban of Blackberry in the UAE(As all people there where using this and the danger is that some curious people may sniff in all business affairs by dreaming the RIM technology was save)
Anyhow the layout and design looks promising and as i have nothing to hide… and i be far no competition for any lobbyist out there, i will evaluate it… cheers

I was debating whether or not to trade the Tour in on a Droid X pending what happened with the Torch and OS6…. off to the Verizon store to abandon my BB.

Looks good but i’m not impressed so far first things first why go backwards and not launch this phone on Sprint’s 4g network that makes a lot of sense especially when Rim is struggling to compete,I mean 4g is one of the main reason why the …Htc evo is kicking ass and is getting a lot of iphone lovers to rethink sticking with the iphone cause At&t is that sorry network that’s got so many iphone customers frustrated, why not seperate yourself from the pack RIM why go backwards and some people will say well they will eventually release with sprint but why not hit the ground running? Also i haven’t heard anything about more internal memory another dept where Bberrys suck at and trust me i’m a Bberry lover.Oh and how about a faster processor.See More

    Hi guys,

Congratulations for the release. But for such a next-generation smartphone, here are some of the features we could have expected for a premium product :

    - 1 GHz processor
    - 1500mAh battery
    - 600×800 pixels screen resolution (considering the ratio of the Torch screen)
    - 8 Megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording @ 30 FPS
    - Full Flash 10.1 support for the web browser
    - Bluetooth v3.0
    - 4G support

Apart from full Flash 10.1 and 4G support, these are the premium features that the Samsung Wave I recently got sports, thanks to its fast processor and well optimized OS.

So, trust me, if you ever release another slider phone with the same design, but sporting all these features, we'll be a LOT to jump into the BlackBerry 6 wagon ! Withouth a doubt ;-) .

    Any word about that ?

    All The Best,
    Jay Key

They didn't rule out a release to other 'older' smartphones, like the Storm2. But if they were going to plan a release, they could/would probably have announced it in their press statement. Like with the other devices.

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

If you look at the pictures and videos of OS6 running on the Bold 9700/9780 or what it's called, you will notice that even that device suffers from the lack of screen estate. So I think it is fairly unusable…

  • http://twitter.com/alex3305 Alex van den Hoogen

Even when a company goes either bankrupt or is getting sold, it doesn't say anything about the quality of their products! HP is probably going to use webOS like crazy on their portable devices and other 'smart'-devices.

Got a GPS app that can work at least as well as my daughter's much cheaper phone does – you know, tell me how far I've walked, not make me type the same damn thing over and over because I forgot to add it to favourities?

I like the IDEA of my blackberry – but the apps are pretty pitiful. Most cell phones can do email now… so not sure why I'd bother with the additional expense of another blackberry when my current contract runs out (or my Curve dies).

“apple provide support for iOS 4, from iphone 3G, 3GS, 4

three generation, but RIM provide support for OS-6 only for few last phones.”

And by “providing support” for the older phones (3G), the new iOS 4 runs at a cripplingly slow speed. At least RIM understood that loading a new OS on an old and slower phone wouldn't work…So they allow older phone users to keep running their older OS so the phones operate properly…

And as for the landscape/portrait slide out keyboard issue, I prefer the slimmer keyboard. As someone who generally texts/emails more than a couple thousand times per month, it's MUCH easier and faster to not stretch my fingers farther to reach the same keys…

  • bleh

Little upset here that my blackberry storm is not included in the list of phones that will be able to upgrade to blackberry 6. When I got this phone I thought I was getting the newest and greatest most amazing phone. Since having it they came out with storm 2 only 2 months after mine was purchased for the same price I had paid. The storm gets little attention as far as upgrades, new apps, etc. The hype that surrounded this phone was definitely misleading, can't wait to get a phone that doesn't freeze up because i have more than 6 apps. And why do I have a 3g option but can't use it. bleh.

You can't compare a Blackberry to an iPhone. Blackberry's are for people who actually do more enterprise work than regular consumer phones. iPhone may be at the top of its game, but when you compare apples to apples it isn't truly for business. Also on that note at least when Blackberry launches a new phone it already comes with a camera.

I disagree about the ey board for serious texting. The side slide qwertys slow you down in my opinion cause you have turn the phone sideways and the keystrokes take longer because of the distance of center to edge. I currently have a side keyboard and cant wait to go back to Blackberry because I text and email so much faster with their keyboard. Maybe just me but think probably there alot of people that agree.

As excited as I am for this phone….AT&T?!?!?!?! Why in the world you make that phone exclusive that craptastical company? I've left them 2x and have no intentions of going back for a 3rd (both previous times were for Blackberries as well). This is complete BS.

  • LOVES HER BLACKBERRY

PLEASE LET THIS PHONE BE ON THE VERIZON NETWORK I WANT IT REALLY BAD BUT THERE IS NO WAY IN H**L I'M SWITCHING CARRIERS. I ALREADY HAVE THE STORM AND I LOVE THIS PHONE. PLEASE OH PLEASE LET IT BE ON THE VERIZON NETWORK.

  • Blonde

Why AT&T and not Verizon???? When will the phone be released to other carriers to those of us who enjoy our BB can get the new version? And you keep dodging the answer if BB6 is going to work on all other BlackBerry's. I have a Storm 2 and would like to take advantage of of BB6. BB5 has had it's challenges with my Storm and would like one that actually works well.

  • Katie

I was really excited about this phone until I realized that it was going to be released exclusively to AT&T – I won't use them. I like actually being able to receive phone calls inside my house. Being exclusive at all is a bit ridiculous in the first place, and AT&T seems to be the most disliked carrier these days. Strikes me as a bad move.

I really hope the Blackberry 6 OS is a better platform for developing apps for so that more people will actually do it. I'm about ready to switch to Android not because I don't love my BB (cause I do, like crazy!), but because a lot of services that I want to use simply aren't available or are terrible apps on the BB. I think that in order for BlackBerry to really keep up with the Android and iPhone, they need to step up the app game by quite a bit.

It'd be awesome if my 8530 could run the new OS, I'd love to see it.

  • Sector9crusier

What about those of us who just bought a brand new BB Bold 9700 and extended our contracts in doing so. I think BB should offer an upgrade incentive like apple did with the Iphone 4. Especially when we consider that BB V6.0 is not avail immedimately with the release of the Tourch. I love BB and always want the latest and the greatest but I wont be able to upgrade for some now and I can't even get the software before I'm able to get an upgrade with ATT?

  • Amy

another phone exclusive with AT&T….thanks for nothing!

  • Staycfitz

I really hope it will be available thru Sprint they dont have touch BB. I would love to have this, it looks like a great phone!

  • Tony

I would be delighted with Blackberry 6 if it was coming to the 9550, epic fail by you RIM. And I am not getting the Storm 2 refresh, i should have to in order to get Blackberry 6. I will most likely be going to Android now because of this.

  • jtalker1965

Yippy? Their second touch screen phone WOW are we behind the others. Don't get me wrong, I love my Storm but where in the world are their other touch screen phones? Someone over there really needs to figure out what direction they are heading. BB is loosing the market to the other guys because the understand what “we” want and are looking for. The CEO is out of touch with the real world. Good luck with it. I am waiting to see if and when the Storm 3 shows up and if the listen to us about the bogus touch/click screen. Make it a touch and I may be there on openning day to buy one. Droid X is looking better each and everyday.

  • WillieLee

As a user in Canada, who exactly are you going to use? Bell, Telus and Rogers all use this wireless band. Is there another national Canadian provider that you know that's being kept secret from the rest of Canada?

  • Lisa Lamm1407

Will it be available to other carriers as well? This will be a major letdown if it's only available to ATT ONLY, I am sure that you would lose many blackberry clients if this were the case. I have had several blackberries and I love them and I have been waiting on this for a very long time, however, I have TMobile and I really do hope it comes to the TMOBILE carrier as well.

  • da_gawd_father

The Blackberry Tour isn't going to get OS 6? What carrier will get exclusive rights to sell the Torch?

  • Clffcrbtr

Love BlackBerry,They are not for everyone.I am waiting on a new 9105 Pearl 3G (with the T9 keypad we can't get 9100 here in UK too easily).it will replace much loved 8120 Pearl.!.I have found other touchscreen smartphones and me don't get on,but with Torch 'ya got both!.Cool.

  • A A Saksena

This is really good but I think it would have been better if the phone would have been launched with the QWERTY keyboard in landscape rather than portrait.

  • Robertkukla

What upsets me is all the Blackberry phones that get pushed aside such as the Curve..Im switching to the Droid, I loved my Blackberry but there just falling behinde..

  • Lets

Will we have BlackBerry Torch for NEXTEL? How about in Brazil? WHEN????

  • Wm Gregory

why isn't the BB 6.0 available for the Storm and Storm 2??

  • D-Roy

Is the Blackberry 6 going to be available for the Storm as well?

  • Mackenzieroderick

I would love to get one, but wait, you have decided to go exclusive with the carrier of the phone that is your biggest competition instead of my carrier. Your loss I guess.

  • Cheryl Amyotte

I agree that everyone has a different preference. I myself LOVE the Blackberry keyboard, and the Blackberry in general. Unfortunately, if you need a bigger keyboard, you may have to stick with a computer… :)

  • Sapper35

I just want to know when 6 will be available for the bbcurve 8530?

  • clffcrbtr

We had same dilemma over here in the UK on the original i-phone it was only available on the O2 network here and on a lo——ng contract,so people were unlocking them like crazy, new models now come on all our carriers here!.Limited availability is a backward step.

  • Jen8112

I want this phone! How long will it be exclusive to AT&T? I have Sprint and will NOT switch to AT&T for a phone, I'd rather get an Android. Will Sprint get their own touchscreen BB? Thanks!

  • Bean1324

Very disappointed that this phone will not be offered through other carriers such as Verizon Wireless

  • MM045

Guess its time to switch to AT&T to get an iphone!

  • Aussie

All is want from my Storm 2 is for it to be linked with Google – like the Moto Droid, it would add the features i like in my Droid to the features i LOVE in my BB. The interaction between the Droid and Google is amazing with the syncing of calenders and use of picasa and the google maps navigation (not just directions) I dont use outlook so syncing is not as easy and the web based services offered by google are outstanding. I feel a partnership between RIM and Google would make for a PERFECT phone.

  • ian manrowe

i happy about this. want 1.

  • Adwin_prasad

That's a good point you have regarding battery-life, BB should have put out the longest lasting battery on the market. I'm not to excited about this phone, especially when the iPhone 4 has more features for the same price.

  • Phoenixsavant

And it's because if I wanted a slider phone, I'd get one. The company might have to pay me to take one, and pay my bill for a long time, but that's my preference. I don't have a slider, and don't buy a slider because I do not WANT a slider. I'm not a kid who is out to text every 10 seconds of their life or who wants to tweet every other stray thought.

  • howcanitbe

I also live 30 Mins north of Boston and my signal with AT&T is better than friends of mine with VZ. This has been the case with every phone I have had since switching from VZ many years ago. I also have never had a dropped call in Boston proper. I agree with the poster below that AT&T has a bad rap because of the Iphone and it's issues and the fact that people with other services are mad because they can't get an Iphone (yet).

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

But then you go and post a soap box speech about how you don’t need to get up on your soap box and talk to people.. classic! Go get a slider and play with it in the closet.. We won't tell, we promise…

  • Samfairchild

I love my blackberry, except that it has no room for apps! This torch looks like it will change that.

  • A9wallace

Ill take a blckberry before an i phone anyday… Once you go black youll never go back lol..That should be the new slogan jk… in all seriousness though i cant wait to get mines next thursday smh

  • Mashermech

For those who are mad at OS 6 is not going to be on every BB handset… think of it this way. Put windows 7 on a comptuer from even 5 years ago and see how well it runs, you will be wanting OS 5 back on there immediately. There are reasons they do what they do not just to piss everyone off like you may think. The Pearl, 9650 and 9700 Bold are the only BB devices that have the memory (512mb) capible of running the new OS

  • C_molina72

I suggest you tell your friends at Blackberry that they need to bring the Torch to Sprint. AT&T's reputation isn't the greatest so I'm not sure why they went with them.

  • Rpcernig

love the TORCH!!! but when will it be available for Verizon????

  • MC

after this 9800 Torch it would be a good idea for 9900 Flame in the making…

  • Michael Nolan

Since it is a slider phone my question is how will you or have you developed a protective case or also known as a “phone condom” to protect our wonderful new Blackberry from damage?? I can't wait for this new phone to come out. Long Live BB

  • Fespriu1

    why only with ATT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/rentngo Inchirieri Masini

no update to OS6 for storm users for the moment, why? to avoid cannibalizing the product? many BB storm users would have done updates to OS6 before buying the new 9800 … which would have decreased sales

  • Somenothingness

What's with AT&T being the only current carrier of this phone?

  • cloudy

amazing os, but will not work with my storm2. and my faith with RIM just went from 100 to almost 0. If the rumor were true that there might be a lite version, you must let's us know otherwise people will get rid of their blackberry. Who know, BB7 will not be compatible with current BB6 devices and then what, keep buying new device for every new OS?!, I think that won't work with me or many other blackberry customers. I guess I will go with new droid X. sorry RIM if you keep doing this, more customer with be so up-set and leave you.

  • The Translator

    Mike,

As a loyal RIM customer, who less than one year ago “upgraded” my device to the 8520,i AM shocked and astounded that my device now has a EOL of less than a year. over 65% of your current users are not going to be able to use OS 6 and they are ticked off at RIM! I am not leaving RIM as I am a crackberry addict, but i am steamed that I need to purchase a new device to upgrade my OS. You cant tell me that when my device was released, you guys didnt know OS 6 was coming and that the 8520/30, Storm 2, and everything else released in 2009 except 9700 was not going to be able to run this. Maybe one of your focuses should also be to support the users who already have your devices and are keeping you in business.

  • fern1961

I'd be happy if I could get the BlackBerry App Store back on my Bold 9700 that I just bought in May. One day it worked, the next day it didn't. Have deleted and reloaded it numerous times with the same result – or should I say without result? Kinda sucks, to be honest.

  • AK

Will the BB Torch be available for Verizon ?
I went to the Verizon website and they do not have it.

I went to the AT&T website and there it is in the front page.

Will it be like the iPhone where only AT&T has it?

You bought a $29 device and now your complaining that you're not being taken care of. Gezzz consumers.. You want lower prices for a phone so RIM makes one for you. Then you complain that they won't upgrade it. I understand the frustration but some of us bought $199- $299 devices we expect an upgrade. You get what you paid for man. I can understand Storm 2 users complaints but come on… I can even bet you got it for Free with your contract.

  • ars

and the blackberry 9520. it's only 8 months old!!! refund me! I want OS6, I have spent 499€!!!

  • Jezebelle16

I love my blackberry no matter what. I will never change:) Keep up the GREAT work Blackberry!!I like the fact that it has BBM, that it is free and you can chat with anybody all over the world…

  • MaheshK

When can we get the Torch on T-Mobile? I work at the World Bank and we are with T-Mobile. I also develop app and evaluate BB solutions. With the Torch and OS 6, we can do so many more apps here at the World Bank.

  • Terilynn1970

BlackBerry never fails to amaze me. LOVE my Berry !

  • eric

so no BB6 for the Tour? disappointing….or the storm? or storm 2? why leave some of your customers behind…

  • Leo

Find no support for the Storm 2 a shame. A very recent flagship model should be included in the BB6 roll out, even if you have to tailor the OS. Not including is lack of respect for your own engineers and customers. Let all storm 2 owners move to android rather than the dull 9800.

  • Jonald86

They wont allow storm 2 to have os 6 because of this phone is basically a copy with a flip out!

  • Harmi2000

RIM, I mean this in the nicest possible way, but you need to pick up your game!

Iphone 4 and Android phones are visually superior, have faster processors and better functioning OS. I currently own a Bold 9700, it is a great phone, but seemed behind when I compared it with an Iphone 3Gs. Now 6 months down the line is starting to fall apart in terms of both hardware and software. What happened to the robust, dependable nature of the blackberry, which was such a prominent, and attractive feature of previous models? Blackberry should be putting out phones which are market leaders – this includes having the fastest processors/the highest resolution screens/ seamless and visually attractive operating system and the longest battery life. On top of that for having the greatest market share where is the app support?

Having a worlwide market share, has clearly made RIM complacent, which is an unfortunate step on the road to a company's doom. Rapid action is required to ensure the Blackberry maintains its market domination – this should go beyond relying blindly on customer loyalty and fundamentally supplying a superior product.

  • hsquared

Why are you releasing it only to at&t? You would make a lot of people happier about it's release if you brought it to VERIZON!!!

  • kevin

I'm sick of blackberry's. there coming out with stuff that has been out for years. I am defiantly switching to the droid. Plus the storms don't get the new OS, just stupid.

  • Naassty1

I have to agree with you on this one. I have had At&T now for nine years myself. Could not ask for a better service. I have been all of the states as well as travel around this Globe. It's all good.

  • OrionAntares

Didn't the report say that Android took the lead over both iPhone AND BB?

  • http://www.anthonytaurus.com Anthony Taurus

The real question is why do people hate AT&T so much. The internet caps were necessary and I am not surprised it happened with iPhone users burning the bandwidth. AT&T had to do something to unclog the system.

The caps were good for most of us because it lowered the price of the internet. For others, you'll have to pay extra. If you somehow go over 2GB, you're using your phone for the internet entirely too much. Granted, they shouldn't have gotten rid of the unlimited plan. But, nothing is stopping you from going over 2GB. You'll just have to pay for it at a per MB rate.

  • Cee_dow

RIM really dropped the ball and along with that gave their loyal Blackberry fans like myself a slap in the face the Torch looks good but no screen resolution upgrade and they didn't mention any processor upgrade and why not a 8megapixel cam so that world travelling business people who are loyal to Bberry can video chat with their familly and why not go 4g on the sprint network. So add it all up and this explains why everyone is going for the Evo 4g and are all saying goodbye to the Bberry because all those features are what the Evo has.Why even name it the torch when you had your chance to torch the competition and you blew it.But seriously add all these things into the torch and release it on sprints 4g network and your device would be selling off the shelf like the Evo is otherwise keep dreaming RIM and your sales will continue to plummit so sad until you put out a state of the art device i'm sticking with my Tour cause i know a quality device when i see it afterall it is 2010 step your game up.

  • Slwalton

Damn! I got the Bold 9650 when it came out and love this new Blackberry. The folks in my office say I am a Blackberry addict and need help. LOL. I think they're right. I love the Torch. I need it. Its sweet looking. I dont even care its on AT&T I like the phone, the look, the features.

    Steve

  • cweav

yeah but thats 5 years ago and even still flagship computers from back then can run 7 fine youre argument is dead because any computer made 2 years ago can run 7 fine, but a phone less than a year old can run os6 thats bull

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Bigger screens and faster processors mean nothing it the foundation they are built on sucks. It does not make you an industry leader is some this is bigger faster. It has to do with reliability and stability all of which Apple has shown their new phone is not.

  • Xpedtion99

screw rim the storm 2 should have gotten it also. i will not buy another phone

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Storm was never a flag ship device just FYI the Bold line & 8800 were the flagship devices.

  • Lamillworks

Why not for the Storm or Storm 2?

  • Rinque85

will i be able to get os6 on my storm 2?

  • Mike S.

A neighbor of mine works for Verizon at its central office. He says the phone will come out on Verizon but doesn't know when. Keep in mind that BB wants to take advantage of the forthcoming school year so it would be logical to release it on Verizon and perhaps others asap to get the kids who are buying or upgrading before school starts. Surely it would be remarkably unwise to only have the phone on AT&T, recognized as the worst carrier out there.

  • Ira

i totally agreed with you. i am storm 2 user, too. this really pissed me off. will definately get droid X

  • Chris92271

Why lock in to ATT? and at the same price as an iPhone??? What a way to NOT attract new customers, or allow current BB owners on Sprint to enjoy this new phone.

  • kobi

Great move BB! BB serves business users very well but, until this came out, not having a device that would have both touch screen AND physical keyboard was quite disappointing for BB fans. Hope the thing will live up to the expectations.

You answered your own question in your comment: When you say Blackberry phones “really need to focus on what makes them unique and likable with their core users” and “improve on that” — well, that's exactly what they've accomplished with the Torch. The main that makes Blackberry “likeable with their core users” is the vertical keyboard (which they can do with one hand) and terrific email, period. How can Blackberry “improve on that” for their “core users” — by adding a touch-screen and improved internet — which is exactly what they did with the Torch. Blackberry users DON'T want a horizontal keyboard (which requires two hands) — that's why they like Blackberry to begin with. It's very clear that you are not a Blackberry user nor have any clue what their “core users” like about them. The Blackberry Torch is EXACTLY what they needed to do to “focus on their core users” and “improve on that.”

Because RIM writes their own 3G stack – not outsource from an OEM that has no clue what their doing with North American/European 3G stacks; Foxconn makes hardware for numerous competitors but does NOT make radios internally they come pre-assembled on a chip with antenna and 3G/radio stack pre-encoded.

Because RIM has a PROVEN history of releasing quality hardware with proper phone call quality – that EVER increases since the 8700 onward to the 9700 currently – ALL have been on AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Rogers Wireless/Rogers AT&T, Telus, Bell, and so many other providers worldwide.

No, RIM is not flashy – and BlackBerry 6 ads is new clothes for them in marketing and the OS look & feel – but make no mistake RIM are NOT jokers calling security “a whole slew of alphabet soup” and not understanding what its about – unlock Steve Jobs.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

    1. name me 1 device with the same screen size with higher resolution & a keyboard. i.e. Pre – dead, company, assets, and IP owned by HP.
    2. 2.5yrs ago Nokia E71 was the best competitor with the classical slate keyboard design; Motorola Q9 gets honorable mention – BOTH had 320×240 resolution! Bold 9000 shipped and IT was the leader for resolution of that class of device and the contrast was awe inspiring.
    3. Backwards compatibility for: consumer apps, developers that make them, and corporate apps and MDS deployed intranet solutions – VERY important!! So RIM is not going to screw over their entrenched licensee's in the long haul with a new device that doesn't have what they already need deployed.
    4. Rogers, Telus, Bell all use the PROPER 850/1900Mhz bandwidth and NON have had call quality or data speeds! STOP drinking the Koolaid! You're Canadian its time to research and live like one! You're not on AT&T the majority of times and even with EDGE Rogers' deployment with CS9 was better than AT&T's CS6 which 2yrs later they changed to CS9 to follow suit with Rogers.

Don't worry we DON'T have network congestion and our networks are built properly with a brass that researches not goes for the lowest deployment price!

  • Chito

Blackberry's are just so grown up.

Kids in high school have iPhones and Droids. Recess is over people.

    Step your game up.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

It's just an official launch!! Get over it.
Rogers, Telus, and Bell officially announced they'll all carry the 9800 in a few weeks up to 30days after August 30th. RIM has done this with the 8700, 8100 Pearl (T-Mobile had it exclusively for 4mths), 8800, 8820, 8300, 8310/8320, 8900, 9000 & 9700. Of note Bold 9000 released on Rogers just 2wks after AT&T did, and the 9700 released on Rogers almost 2weeks before AT&T did due to their issues.

Don't worry you'll have this available on many other carriers VERY soon after August 12. Proof is in the pudding … goto BlackBerry.com and check out press releases for devices over the past 24mths to see the trends of releases vs official & initial carrier release.

Calendar App is amongst the BEST in the industry. Name me one on any other platform & what more it offers in a personal or corporate space for work/personal daily use!
Filters … this is the way of the world of email – gmail, ymail, hotmail, live.com, me.com, etc etc etc – its ALL filters or SPAM. Man that statement about filters … that's more lame than those that are drinking the Apple Kool-Aid.
Why on earth do I want to see someone typing before it's sent? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you on Facebook but I'll agree I want more features of FaceBook. GPS – on your daughters' phone … how accurate does it show how far she walked … and WHY would a girl want such an application – not too safe if you ask me. BlackBerry's fathered GPS tracking apps and made the concept mainstream; there's plenty you just need to search. Also no other app works with a smartphone & hardware to track your car if stolen ;) no “there is NO app for that” – not on iPhone.
what thing are you typing over & over because you forgot to add it to favourites … a URL!? This is a smartphone not a desktop URL and pre-emptive typing solutions not always what you want when you begin typing. BTW you get what you're asking in BB6.

Others are coming, Storm 3 is in early tests in Storm 2 outer casing as rumors have it = remember its rumors and nothing is promised.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

No, No, NO! its just a lame hardware and so many returns and complaints that this OS 6 will not run smooth on … its that SurePress Screen that's the key fault. upgrade and stop sticking with an old CDMA network that confines you to 1/2 carriers nationally with 2 carriers roaming ONLY in North America. CDMA is dead, Verizon knows it and you'll be left out to suffer late next year after you hardware upgrade soon to another CDMA device.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

Another sour puss. WHY on Earth are you buying a 9mth old phone in the past 30 days – Brand new as you claim?!?! Sorry but that's YOUR fault; you didn't research or you're troll.

Why does it HAVE TO BE ?! They have another CDMA solution coming. Just wait. Switching carriers should NOT cause you to switch BlackBerry.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

for crying out loud. If you REALLY want BB6 on your 9550 look on the net for the leaked OS – try loading it yourself UNSUPPORTED by RIM. if you get it working and its horrible you'll KNOW why RIM didn't allow it or configure it to work with it.

  • http://seriousmobile.wordpress.com/ Prom1

Great pop-up ads that interrupt my browsing experience that just got improved 100 fold on the BlackBerry – more exception errors now related to Flash when its debuting on BB6 … no thanks keep that junk. There is not 1 flash app that is required to run in a browser for consumers and shouldn't be either.

Wrong, the BB keyboard is damn good like they are. I used to have a BB world edition before switching to an iphone and now I'm getting this one cauz it's the best of both world. Full touch for fast access to mail, sms and anything else and a physical keyboard for fast typing. I love it!

All I want to know is why Sprint hasn't gotten a new BB other than an upgarded curve or a different color. Sprint customers want touchscreen BB too. I don't want to switch to AT&T or Verizon. I've been with sprint since I was 16. If we can't get new BB phones other than upgrades at least give us an options to buy them directly from BB then we can choose providers. I would even accept paying for the price of them phone. SPRINT NEEDS TOUCH BB PHONES, NOT HAND ME DOWNS FROM 2 YEARS AGO

  • Elegantblkchina1

I'm sorry to say, but AT&T sucks. I worked at a company that had them and there were always problems. From terrible reception to mystery charges that were later credited because they were BS. These problems were not from any BB or Apple phone, these problems were strictly from AT&T. Calls were constantly dropping while driving in the most urban areas. Why do you think AT&T goes out of their way to make sure they always have the hottest phones first??? Because otherwise no one would want them. To break it down, Sprint has the worst customer service and will lie to you in a heartbeat, but their prices are great. Verizon charges you for EVERYTHING and their plans are expensive, but their customer service is great. AT&T has the worst service and sneaky billing, but their phones are hot. And poor Cricket is the cheapest of them all, but their phones suck, aesthetically speaking.

  • bb4321

preach. tell it like it is. exclusivity for any phone on any network is horrible to consumers in this industry. “release the Cracken”

  • Xflamechris

Now I am pissed ! Storm 2 is not officially getting Blackberry 6 !
What a dumb decission ! Why your are letting down your flagship touchscreen device users ??

  • Brit_jam40

It upsets me when a new phone, irregardless of the brand or type is limited to one carrier. Why should they have a monopoly? Everyone has their preference on which carrier best suits their needs. We shouldn't be forced to choose a carrier, or sacrifice the use of a desired brand, just because it is only offered by a select few.

  • Brandi

I was so exicted when I saw this new BB being released…I've been waiting for the lastest and greatest release. There is only one problem, I'm not with AT & T. Does anyone know when and if Tmobile with get the Torch? Thanks!

I am just wondering if they will allow existing BB users the option to go ahead and upgrade to the Torch even if they are not due an upgrade yet, I just moved to the 9700 in May, had I known exactly when the Torch was going to be available, I would probably have waited for it. I am told that IPhone users are being allowed to upgrade to the 4 even if they aren't eligible yet, or have just upgraded to the “latest” one recently.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

This is all carrier based RIM or Apple have nothing to do unless they say to carriers well cover the costs of all lost costs to allowing people to upgrade. I do not see anyone doing this the cost would be huge….

what about no contract user its not only in your country man! my country its not just 199-299 we have to pay 600-700 US dollar for storm!! is it worth to complain??

  • Andro

It looks OK, although as I currently have a Storm 2 and an HTC Desire, I can say fairly certainly that I'm on my last BlackBerry. The current (Storm 2) OS just has too many bugs, and the whole 'resend the service books' / 'reset the routing tables' / 'do a battery pull' stuff is a bit pre-historic. It's a shame, I really wanted to like my BB more than the HTC, but Android is just such a lot better I could only keep up the pretense for a few days… I've got a year left on my BB contract, and I'm going to have to hear some amazing things about how *STABLE* the new BB OS is to get me to stick with RIM next summer.

  • Taoyoy

Totally AGREE!! now im using storm 2.i bought storm2 because i saw the advertisement of OS6.i dont think that RIM gonna abandon us like this ,this is so pain for me i really loveBB but now NO MORE BB !!

People would you just stop for 2 seconds and think. All of you are just saying the same thing over and over. RIM will take care of its customers don’t worry. All they did was announce the Torch Tuesday and everyone is in an uproar. Give RIM time to let you know about what devices will carry the OS. You're like a mob mentality and you're driving me nuts cause none of you even have a clue your just “give me, give me” give it time man and take a chill pill.

  • Grumpet

I hope the BB6 is able to interact with websites like my HTC EVO does…
…Frankly I had to let my Storm go because I could not conduct business with it via websites my company uses.

Despite the speed of the HTC and it's ability to navigate within about any website the batter life on it makes it terrible for a business application.

If BB can figure out how to make their products work with the internet and it's many sites many people would come back to them for that and BB's ability to sync with email so well.

I was going to hold off on my purchase but after I realized that BB does not offer a phone number to call in and ask questions about their products I figured game over and got the EVO.

BB needs to wake up in the customer service area and offer a phone line that would prevent it's customers from doing what I did… Sometimes a company gets so used to being the big boy on the block the message to the brain that it's not takes to long to get there. Let's hope BB get's with the program a bit in this area.

  • Spirituallyinsane

    Alex,

Each carrier has its own version of the BlackBerry OS. This means that each carrier must approve a release of a new software version for their devices, so if OS6 is to be released for other devices, the carrier must approve it before RIM can make it available to users. This is to prevent a bunch of people upgrading their Storm 2s, for example, and encountering problems, then calling Verizon for support. The software releases are controlled by those that are going to have to support the software.

Xoxol11101: I have a Sony Xperia X10 and like it very much. I'm in my 30s and have nothing against Blackberry; in fact, I think Blackberrys are great devices. If you review what I initially wrote about the Torch and you'll see that, overall, I like the phone! I'm not sure why there are people in this blog who like to bash anybody who suggests any criticism towards Blackberry phones. There's no such thing as a perfect smartphone! If you're not critical of what RIM dishes out to you, then RIM gets complacent and keeps churning out phones that just tweak a bit here and add a bit there without really getting people excited the way that Apple has managed to do with their products and marketing.

To recap my opinion: Blackberry doesn't seem to have done enough with this recent phone release. I think they need to focus on the features that appeal to their core users AND reach out to new users to a much greater extent. By features that appeal to core users, I specifically highlighted battery life: it should have been much, much better – a big breakthrough, such as double the battery life of the iPhone 4, to really make a contrast to that phone and appeal to people who are busy and don't want to be charging or swapping batteries all the time. By reaching out to new users, I suggested that they offer a selection of phones to snag users of other phone formats (e.g., young people used to using quick messaging phones). These are just suggestions: you may personally not like any of them, but it doesn't help anyone – yourself, me, other people reading this forum, or RIM – if you get on the defensive and bash anyone who says anything critical about Blackberry products.

I'm a Canadian who greatly appreciates the importance of RIM to the Canadian economy. It's at the top of the list of the 100 biggest tech companies in Canada, and it has more market value than the other 99 companies on that list combined. If RIM ever went under the way Nortel did, the results would be devastating. I don't want that to happen: I want RIM to reinvigorate itself and steal iPhone's spotlight. The Torch didn't do that: its release was a blip, a drop in the bucket, compared to that of the iPhone. That's a problem that RIM has to fix, and they'll need Blackberry users' help to do it. So don't just sit around and reiterate what you love about the Blackberry and what it can do vs what other phones can't do: be proactive and suggest ways to make Blackberrys better.

Love BB products and like the ease of use of the keyboard. Love the Torch but why did BB go and make it an ATT exclusive. Plenty market share sitting around w other carriers that would love that phone

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Because quantity does not mean quality. I would rather have a stable Processor at almost half the speed then an unstable 1 GHz processor that drains battery life, causes you to reboot all the time. It's also called bad programming. If you know SQL at all people can write a query that will return exactly the data they want. Then comes along another programmer that writes the same SQL query that is shorter faster and less CPU intensive but returns the same result. So the same code runs twice as fast with the same result meaning faster execution less CPU and less power. I could just put more CPU power in the SQL server till it runs the bad code just as fast as the good code but that’s not fixing a problem. RIM has hard code and is done properly so you don’t need to waste money on huge CPUs or batteries. The better the code is written the less CPU power is required to do the same thing. So this is the reason why we don’t need 1GHz CPUs

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Question I'm not basing at all but just asking, when you say ” By reaching out to new users, I suggested that they offer a selection of phones to snag users of other phone formats (e.g., young people used to using quick messaging phones).”

Apple has 4 phones that’s it, they all look the same, all are the same shape and form factor pretty much. RIM has over 50 + different types of phones put out. I would say maybe you have 10 to pick from that are current.

I would love to have a Torch! It looks nice, sounds like a masterpiece, and am also very upset it's exclusive to AT&T only… I currently have AT&T, but they're plans are just way too expensive to keep up with, in my opinion. I'm also on a family plan and my Dad is really interested in the EVO4, so we're switching to Sprint. I also had Sprint as my carrier all throughout high school and never had a problem with service, but we switched when I left for college because the school I go to gives their students iPhones. I decided I didn't want the iPhone after all and we stuck it out with AT&T… My college campus is well-equipped AT&T towers along with the rest city, but I'm either have problems with my connection or I'm on Edge… So, yes, I have had many problems and complaints with AT&T and I DON'T have an iPhone. So, I would love it if they would release it to other carriers, I really hate that I have to settle for an older BB model (antique, really) just because Sprint's not getting the good stuff…

Apple released their IPhone 4 too soon. What success? If they waited a bit longer, they'd have realized how bad their device was and would have fixed it. But no, they had to launch it because of greed and now…. IPhone is going downhill!!! It STILL hasn't been fixed!!! Lets send out a case to apologize! Great PR!! Fix it NOW!

  • T0pazz

    Yup, more features for sure.
    Dropped calls!! Love it!! lmao

  • daddie0we

I have never had problems with dropped calls in the Boston/Prov area with AT&T. My friend switched to an iPhone from a Blackberry and ever since it has been one problem after another talking to him. When he owned a Blackberry, no problems. I have another friend with a Droid on the Verizon network and I've never had a problem talking to him. The iPhone is a toy that sometimes can be used as a phone. It's not AT&T, it's the iToys on their network.

  • Hatecha

You know there are other people who rely mainly on texting to communicate other than just “kids who are out to text every 10 seconds”. It really irritates me when people make assumptions based on stupid preconcieved notions. I am deaf, so my main means of communicating when I'm out and about it texting. Hi,
I am very impressed with this phone and it's features. I am already a BB user and have been thinking about and upgrade. Now my only issue is that I do not live in the US. Are there any unlocked versions for international users available? If so, where can I purchase one and how much will it cost. If not, can you tell me when it will become available? Thanks for all the great info.

  • Andredinatale

When will the Torch be made available for CDMA networks ?

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

All GSM phones can unlock from their carrier. It depends where you do it but the cost is around $40 to unlock them. Next to that the phone would be around $599 with no contract. I am assuming the announcement for other carriers will come in the next few weeks after AT&T has had their monopoly for the launch.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Sorry the price is $499 with no contract

  • Dreamshore

PLEASE HAVE VERIZON CARRY THE TORCH TOO PLEASE!!!! If you did a survey on Blackberry users and which network they'd preferred, I am sure you would get more Verizon users than AT&T users!!

  • Brittni629

Yes, please do!! I have the Droid now, and I will be waiting until the Torch comes to Verizon, when I will get it immediately!

  • Brittni629

I don't know… I had AT&T for a long time before I switched to Verizon, and I never had the iPhone, and I still never had good service anywhere. I actually switched because I moved and literally had NO phone for the first week because I had no reception with AT&T.

  • Brittni629

I don't think people are complaining ONLY because of AT&T connectivity issues. I personally won't be switching because it would cost me 350 bucks PER PHONE to cancel my Verizon plan. If I didn't have that, I might actually think about switching, specifically for this phone!

  • Brittni629

BBM is stupid, I had it for 2 years and never used it once. “Oh by the way, in addition to giving me your phone number, please tell me that number that is difficult to find so we can message in a way that is exactly the same as texting!!!”

  • Sadia

Thanks for the info Caspan. Can you tell me though how do I go about purchasing one without a contract? Usually I would simply go into Amazon and buy what I need there but it's not available yet and I am in need of a phone as of yesterday! I don't mind the cost (if i convert it to my currency it will actually set me back some $3800.00 ttd pre shipping) a good phone is always worth it. As you can imagine, it is a big and expensive purchase and I have made my mind up on the Torch. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

  • Brittni629

Why did you buy a new phone right before a brand new OS came out? That is just poor planning on your part. Noone feels bad for you because you are too impatient to wait 2 months for a new OS.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I do hear what you are saying, BlackBerry Messenger is kind of a program for only BlackBerry users. Unless you have a few BlackBerry friends it makes it useless.

When you say it is the same as texting that is where I will stop you. Let me tell you the ways it is completely different:

    1. When you send a message you can tell if there users phone received it because a D for Delivered shows beside the message.
    2. When the user read your message you get a R for Read beside the message so you know they received and read your message.
    3. There are no texting fees.. none it's all part of your data plan. Carriers nickel and dime you for SMS messages or make you pay 10 for an unlimited plan.
    4. I can send huge video files.. I took a video yesterday that was 9 MB of my kids and sent them to my brother and he was able to watch the video
    5. I can send voice messages. My brother and I talk all the time instead of calling he sends me a quick message.. again no costs to use this.
    6. 100% secure. No one including RIM can read your message for the other user.
    7. You can tell when they are writing to you because a little “…is writing you a message” shows beside the user name in the chat.
    8. I need to know nothing of my PIN or their PIN I only scan their barcode.

These are just the day to day reason that BlackBerry Messenger is not even close to SMS.

Also just so you know to get your PIN message all you have to do is type “mypin” then hit space in an email or SMS and it puts it in for you. As well “Hey give me your MSN address” okay that's doggy.wigle_1997cat@hotmail.com your telling me that is easier to type in then a simple PIN of 2D456CA..?

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I am almost certain you can buy it straight from AT&T. From what I hear WalMart and a few other sellers of AT&T product is also selling the device. Now I don’t know if they are shipping to other countries. Also you need to make sure that your carrier can support the device, is it GSM and the correct bands. Please check these with your carrier first before spending that kind of money.

It supports the following bands: taken from the RIM specs page here http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberry
    Tri-band 3G UMTS networks: 2100/1900/850/800 MHz
    Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks:
    850/900/1800/1900MHz

Next to that I can almost bet people will be selling them on eBay soon enough and as long as the seller has a good reputation you might find a deal.

Why are us Sprint customers getting the shaft? If they wanted to compete with the iPhone, why have the Torch on the biggest network for iPhones??? I'm very dissapointed the way RIM has chosen to do this. The 8330 I've been stuck with for 3 years is out of date, and my only other choices with Sprint are just different versions of the 8330. C'mon RIM.

  • Kagard86

RIM and Verizon Wireless need to get on the same page and have Verizon carry this phone

  • Cutieyomi

Yesterday I purchased the new BB Torch…..I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! I've been longing for a touchscreen phone but I didn't want to switch to the iPhone—-had the 3GS for 2 wks cannot compare to a BB. The Torch is GREAT, I was not too happy about having a slider phone-but you can't go wrong with the BB QWERTY keyboard. Again, I love this new BB its everything I ever wanted….until RIM comes out with a new one lol! Like I always say—BB is a computer trying to be a phone and all others are phones trying to be a computer. Can't beat that!!!! :)

  • Aslamaaneez

when will BB torch introduce in India?

  • ilikemyBB

Well Done….. you built an excellent phone. When my Bold 9000 died on me, i succumbed to the iPhone. I loved the iPhone but it was only a great toy. Wanted my 9000 back. When I found out a new BB touch screen was coming out, i decided to wait. Started to like the iPhone, but nothing was keeping me from a BB. Just turned in the iPhone for the Torch. Best “Tech” decision i have ever made….and i am not a techie. I promise, i will never cheat again. The Torch is the best business phone on the market.

  • lovemyBB

todays teenagers will realize quality when they get their hands on a Blackberry. The iPhone feels light wt and cheap..but it does have nice features.
The BB Torch feels like quality. Plus it is a business phone. the iPhone is a great toy, but it is not a business phone…..and Apps are really not used for business, they are used by teenagers.
However, you are correct. Blackberry should design a “teenager” friendly phone. Build loyalty from kiddies with a techi phone and have their line of business phones for those trying to conduct business. then they would truely embrace the apple philosophy, only better.

But really why AT&T Why is EVERYONE Launching on AT&T .. ?

That has worked well for Palm, the MS KIN, now BB Torch?

So WHY is RIM launching with them..? Same could be asked of MS and Windows Phone 7..?

Do they want it to fail? Google launched with T-mobile the smallest of the four and that worked out well? Why havent any of these new phones/operating systems launched with Verizon or Sprint.. ?

Don't these companies realize its in AT&T interest to be the company to get these new phones so they can kill them so they won't compete with thier iPhones..

  • Cdgoin

Speaking of iPhones success don't they think they would get better support and more enthusiastic support if they launched withVerison or Sprint? Instead of AT&T whihc has a vested interest in having it fail at least as long as they have exclusive rights to both the iPhone and now the Torch. It makes no sense to me.

When will the Blackberry Torch be offered to other cellphone carriers, more less when will it be offered to T-Mobile customers

  • Macappled

Not to mention the cost of AT&T is about $30-40 more a month for a similar plan and Sprint does one better. I can call mobile to mobile to ANY network and it's included in my unlimited minutes unlike AT&T.

  • Prince_tw007

how about my storm 2 ?,i just buy it three months ago,did it support os 6?

  • J9326

i want the new Blackberry Torch, but will i be able to buy it from Sprint. I do not like At&T's service. if their the only one selling then i will never buy –just like the Iphone.

  • Paulie S.

Bought one Saturday. Texting feature stopped working Saturday night. Almost all the other apps stopped working as well. Had to hard reboot the phone.

Sunday morning, the phone would not boot. Tried to hard boot the phone again and again for over an hour.

Reps at the AT&T store were disrespectful and gave me a hard time. They had to try and reboot the phone for over a half hour with no success. They finally admitted that the phone was defective. Gotta love that. Keep reminding myself not to buy generation one products. Went with the iPhone 4.

Manager came out and saw my Torch sitting on the returns counter and said “another one… that’s three today”. Too bad they released an unreliable defective product. Only came out on Thursday and already they had three returns that I was aware of.

  • Tiffanyann

Gotta love Blackberry! When is it slated to come out on other carriers? Namely Sprint………

  • Prakjatu

How come I can't find multiple languages input on my Desktop Manager for Mac even though the company's release notes says Torch now supports for 4 languages: Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese?? Strange!!

If you go to the stats, the BB has outsold all other smart phones combines. Personally, I love blackberry, but I do know there are many out there that don't like them at all. I'm quite content with the one I have now and would only switch to another version if they made milkshakes for me. Have a good one all. :) Laura

  • another frustrated customer

Unreal, you would think that after all the hard work and r&d that Apple and BB put into theses new devices they would not make such a colossal blunder as to sign an exclusive contract with a garbage company like at&t. I guess all the money that at&t doesn't spend on building a better network they spend on lining the pockets of the executives that make key decisions. Maybe they are not so dumb after all. BB if you actually cared about your users you would allow us the decision of what network to use.

  • Rooney

The EVO does not have a pull out keyboard. I want the touch screen with the ability to knock out fast emails.

  • TomG0602

Dear Mike – Congrat's on developing the absolute best BlackBerry ever! But what was your marketing team thinking when they gave exclusive to AT&T? They just flushed all your hard work down the drain. In my area, Verizon provides better service than AT&T. The Torch would be my next logical upgrade, but your marketing team essentially said NO SALE. I think your team should give marketing a big kick in the a** for being so dumb. To work so hard and produce such a great product only to have some idiot market it badly is very sad.

  • Guest

One of my best friends is withg AT&T and she has a blackberry…the amount of calls she has that drop is just RIDICULOUS!!! It's definitely AT&T, not the phones

  • De Stephens

These companies are getting filthy rich selling these toys and convincing you that you can't live without them. Hundreds up front, hundreds per month, thousands per year; only to convince you to start the cycle again two years from now. WOW!

Hello I just got this new Blackberry Torch 9800 today… How do I download songs from my ipod to phone. Please help. Thanks

  • Synchronicityentertainment

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE BB TORCH! THE ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT IS WHY ONLY AT&T AND NOT OTHER PROVIDERS??? AT&T SERVICE PLANS ARE RIDICULOUSLY OVER PRICED! IF AND WHEN BB BOLD 9800 TORCH IS SOLD BY T MOBILE I WOULD THEN UPGRADE! I HEAR SPRINT WILL BE THE NEXT PROVIDER TO CARRY TO BB BOLD 9800 TORCH WITHIN TIME..BB BOLD TOUCH 9800 SHOULD BE SOLD BY ALL PROVIDERS! RIM WILL HEAD FOR DESTRUCTION WITHIN TIME IF THEY LIMIT THE PROVIDERS!!!!

  • Dave Josephs

When is Verizon going to carry the Blackberry Torch ? I , and millions of others do not trust AT&T's coverage and reliability. RIM is losing millions by excluding Verizon on their most advanced smart-phone.

  • Jmingram

Why did you release the phone to AT&…”hello? hello? are you there?”…T first? The provider with the worst coverage (for those of us who actually take our phones SOMEPLACE), and some of the most ridiculous pricing plans possible.

Glad to see that you did skip releasing it to Verizon…the company who cripples wireless hardware in order to sell lame subscription serv ices like Verizon Navigator.

T-Mobile should have gotten this one right out of the gate — best pricing and coverage possible, and no hobbling of the hardware to unjustly enrich fat-a$$ed do-nothings.

  • William

I would love to get a Torch. If only it were available with Verizon…

  • TOTALLY aggravated

I totally agree with the others – you must be KIDDING giving the contract to AT&T. In case you're not aware, AT&T does NOT cover America as they claim. They cut our phones off because we “spent 40% of our time OUT OF THEIR COVERAGE AREA” – really? What happened to Nationwide coverage? And this was in Wyoming – whom they claim to pay other carriers in that state. Needless to say, we couldn't run to Verizon fast enough. I'm a faithful BB user – been through the Pearl, the Curve and now the Tour. I want this phone – is it going to happen? Or will you continue to KEEP your heads in the sand?

  • D WANTS A VERIZON TORCH

I put up with ATT issues for years and went with Verizon about 3yrs ago on my BB8830. I roam internationally and LOVE IT. If and when the TORCH comes to Verizon, I will supply them to the whole exec team. I'll have to wait it out. The guys here using Droids have a ton of email trouble. Not me… 8830 is Sweet – just old! COME TO VERIZON PLEASE!!!!

  • Gguyanaman87

I am highly upset that the blackberry torch is only usable through the AT&T network. I believe that RIM blackberry should have left the option open to the customers who use the product. While I am currently a T-Mobile customer I really wished that this was released to all carriers.

  • Camper no happy

Been waiting about a year for a phone like this to replace my Pearl. Walked in to a Verizon store today and they told me that it was only for AT&T…what a joke! AT&T stinks around hear and my company does not deal with them.

  • Tchgo

Release in india ? Carriers ?

  • Theofficial Alexander

Have you taking a look at Verizon's plan to AT&T?

  • Theofficial Alexander

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint or T mobile. I have used them all and I will say this, I judge a company not only by the phones and plans but by the customer service and I have stories (good as well as the bad) for each of them. Verizon I was with for two years and a month, Sprint: more than a couple of years. TMobile: 4 years AT&T: going on two
I will say this: Everyone has good, bad and horror stories about each company and I can honestly say that 1. Verizon over charges and some of their employees do not listen, lie and seems like the best service you get is when your contract is getting close to end they will do almost whatever to keep you.
TMobile: Price plan seems very good but when my time was up and I did not renew they tried to charge me for a bill that was already paid for by sending it to a collection agency months later, luckily I had my bank statements and other people at that time had the same problem. Sprint: Can't remember how long but long enough as not to probably go back. AT&T: For me has been the best customer service so far and far as coverage goes I think it has more to do with the phone in some cases than the service. I have had both AT&T and Verizon signal go out in the same location while my business partner who has Sprint had no problem. But the big question is this… Why is it that Boost and another company can charge only 50 and 60 dollars for unlimited calling and texting? Do not say that they have crummy service because I used my friend's phone when my Verizon phone would not get a signal. Bottom line all these companies charge too much and one, that I know of have the nerve to charge you for Wi Fi, are you serious?
Now for Blackberry: I had a Droid X which was a joy but battery was a joke and Verizon's employee added on the wrong charges. Took the Droid back and left Verizon. The Blackberry 9800 team instead of spending 7000 hours like one of it's members stated should have spent 7010 hours and done it right. I would tell them what they should have done since I have some knowledge of such, but since they are not paying me…

  • Gimme Some Choices …

Verizon has been pushing me for years to upgrade my old “Hello and Goodbye” phone so I've been looking at new SmartPhones.

I really like the combo slide-out KB and Touch Screen feature available in several phones, hence my interest in the BB Torch 9800. And, I’ve finally caved to the idea of instant email from home and office accounts. Plus, my office provides mobile file access and that could be a real business benefit out of the office.

But, RIM’s boneheaded decision to give the 9800 to ATT is a total deal killer for me. I live about 10 miles outside Wash, DC (Virginia suburbs), not the boondocks, and there are too many ATT “holes.” I have a friend three blocks away that can’t get an ATT signal but I can use my VZ at his house. Also, other friends with ATT are constantly complaining about no-signal and dropped signal.

ATT advertises on TV that they cover 97% (or so) of the US population but anyone with a fifth grade education knows that includes major population centers like NY, Boston, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta. But, what happens if you get too far away from a Population Center, or if you have to drive from Population Center 1 to Population Center 2? Answer: You go through a lot of ATT dead air. Not that VZ covers everywhere either but VZ is multiples better than ATT. Like I said, boneheaded and a deal killer.

And finally, you’d think that RIM, a company that has gone from a per-share stock price of $144.56 (06/20/2008) to $48.72 (08/20/2010), would have enough sense to want to expand its market choices rather than shrink them. I hope the shareholders and Board of Directors are listening.

  • Chris32799

I agree with the other comments here…what were you thinking by not letting the Torch be available with all carriers?!! I have had best luck with T-Mobile and Sprint here in MI, and with having Sprint currently I would have up graded gladly from my BB Curve to the Torch, but am frustrated that I can not. AT&T is an awful company to work with and I am surprised BB didn't do their home work better!! I have had only excellent service with the two I mentioned above and love Sprint, and no one could pay me to go to crappy AT&T. Too expensive and many dropped calls around Detroit!! Please listen to us and get the Torch to all carriers!

  • Chris32799

I went from T-Mobile to Sprint, and beside being cheaper with full internet and cell to cell anytime free, I have been 100% happy with service, no wait with customer service, and no drop calls. I never have to use minutes! I have a BB Curve 8300, would upgrade to Torch, but won't leave Sprint. They made changes this last year and I am impressed! In the Detroit suburbs this service is fantastic (changed 6 mo ago.) Highly recommend them, and their BB's. Wish I could get Torch though. (You guys at BB listening?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  • Chris32799

In Detroit MI area I saw them reduced to $199 at AT&T

  • Chris32799

I have that Curve 8330 through Sprint, and the battery is very long lasting…but if you add too many programs that you forget to close, they will run in the background and your battery life is shorter. Make sure you close your programs and mine lasts 5 days, texting, talking and browsing. Can't beat the super quick email! Bring Torch to Sprint and I'd love to try touch screen…but love the “thumb” key pad the curve has since I can text super fast…finger nails make it impossible for me to use an IPhone…stupid! (And mine aren't long!)

  • Guest

If blackberry Torch needs to be successful , RIM needs to have this phone on all carrier.

I love BB curve. It is more than 2 year old. I would like to stick to blackberry but I do not want ATT. I had bad experience with them. I came across bad customer service and would never ever go back to them. Also I know personally bad experience of mine friend. He bought a nokia smartphone from ATT with no obligation to buy data plan. I remember he and me checking details of website to ensure the same. But just before Iphone 4 launch, when there was talk about loss of exclusive right of IPhone by ATT, he suddenly receive a call from ATT where after 4 month of service he was required mandatorily to go for data plan. else he should not use the phone. poor fellow is using his old phone as he is not able to return phone back.

Why hell do ATT need to wait 4 month? Why hell they need to contact all such user when they are about to loose iphone? Also ATT is real culprit who have created costly packages. People are shevling out $20 more for features you do not want have. Sucess of iphone led other carrier to follow suit to stay in competition. Therefore i hate ATT.

BB is good phone.Thier's email integration and keyboard is legendary in industry. However this technology needs to get married with touch interface. It is very important that every who like torch should be able to have it. If he/she is unable to get it then he can wait but not for long. They may finally by andriod/iphones. RIM should not miss opportunity else they may have to pay price with their own existence.

    .

  • Verizon should have got it

You know I might have gotten this BB Torch if you didn't give it to such a crappy carrier like AT&T. Just be sure when you wake up and realize this that you upgrade before giving it Verizon customers.

  • Canneywiselead

oh my god, i can't read any chinese characters from the torch, i hope there is an expert to explain to me how to setup or download the application so that I can read all.

  • Walnutpaste

Hi, when will this model come to Singapore? Can you give an estimated date? Thanks!

  • Disappointed

I agree with “another frustrated customer” it would take me too long to write how awful at&t is. I used to work for them; they are not interested in customer service at all and are always trying to screw their customers and employees out of their money. Pathetic.

Great BB, but what were they thinking with going with the worst network in the country. Useless on the AT&T network. Dropped calls, no connections, and no coverage in major parts of the U.S.

I love my Torch! Everyone that sees it loves it and wants one. I even have my good friend about to leave the iPhone for a BB. I just hope they hurry up and make more of the BB apps for the Torch. I left the 8900 curve & now I can't get Pandora or the Dictionary along w/ other apps I used on a regular basis. However, it comes loaded w/ Slacker Radio and I can go to the web for the dictionary but the app was just easier. So in a nut shell, im very happy with my choice. Only if AT&T could lower their pricing list, then I would be on top of the world. BB's 4ever!!!

  • Tired of waiting?

I have loved my BB Curve for 2+ years, and really want the new Torch. But not on AT&T! Friends and colleagues who are on their system do nothing but complain endlessly about how bad the service is, and although not perfect (which carrier is), Verizon has got them beat hands down. I'm ready for a new phone, but can I hold out for the Torch on Verizon? My wife just got the Droid X on Verizon and it's incredible, so maybe I'll switch over…

  • Raz

    AT&T? Are your serious?
I love the flexibility that T-Mobile gives me when traveling abroad that allows me to use the full extent of Blackberry's capabilities. For $19.99 month I can use my blackberry abroad with unlimited access to email; and I can setup the service only for the time I am traveling! Which means if I will be out one week I will roughly pay $5. Another great benefit from TMobile is WI-FI calling, when traveling aborad, I connect to a wi-fi network and I can call as if I was in the USA, no extra charges, no roaming.

I have been a Blackberry user for many years, and I am a fan. But let's be honest, the only reason I have not gotten an iPhone is beacuse I would have to switch to ATT.

  • Bgmcattee

Great job, the perfect phone, now how do I get it with a service that works.

  • Bgmcattee

I'm a Blackberry Storm owner and like the phone but have been telling my wife and friends since day one that I would love the phone if only there was a way to have a functional keyboard. well you did it and then made it exclusive to the only service that isn't functional. Boy what a let down. Let me know when this is available at verizon and I'll trade in the Droid I'm being forsed to purchase because someone at Blackberry wasn't thinking. Didn't anyone read the reviews that trash the iphone because of poor service. I believe it said “It could be the best phone in the world but with poor service it's no better than a brick.”

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Buy the phone from AT&T get a miFi from Verizon and strap it to the back of your phone. Boom you have data over Verizon but voice will still be on AT&T unless you use voip :)

    Hi,

I am glad you are enjoying your new BlackBerry Torch 9800. Thank you for your feedback :)

    Thank you

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I have just received my 8900 and call me a fan boy but this device is awesome. I have no idea what others are talking about when they bash this device. I would love to answer any questions people have about the device. I agree I would love to see a HD screen on it faster processor and more memory but honestly the screen looks great the way it is right now and I'm glad I'm saving the power by not having such a high drawing screen. Processor is just fine for me, Programs load like they should and I do not have to wait. as for memory it comes with about 307MB, I would like to be the first to call out anyone that knows they can fill this up with applications and messages… I would love to know how you would do it. I had 50 MB on my last Bold 9000 and i never got close. If you are saving your pictures, music etc to the 4GB card you will not need more.

  • Fatshot

How come no BB6 for the Storm? Also, why did the exclusive marketing rights go to AT&T? Their coverage is terrible compared to Verizon's. You won't find me buying one until Verizon gets it.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hi,

Good to see that you are enjoying your new BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphone. Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy :)

    Thank you

  • Mathatas

Add one more frustrated customer. Why in the world would you limit the Torch to AT&T? Big mistake. So now I am forced to buy a Droid 2 from Verizon. Talk about mismanagement!

  • THE SPENDER

I completely agree with the fact that AT&T is definetely not the right company to get an exclusive. Look who uses BB?? It is mostly business people who travel worldwide and get deals like Tmobile offers on international roaming, and receiving emails abroad. Not the scam and bad service AT&T offers where you return to the US, and your bill is over 4000$. I have been with Tmobile for 25 years back in Germany and now USA. They do have the best offers, and should also have the best phones. I guess the kick back form AT&T to BB must be more worth than the end consumer for BB. Too bad. I actually would have gotten it for 45 employees in the company but we are not with AT&T. Look at how many unlocked Iphones were bought:) because people refused to sign up with AT&T.

  • Swdsoccer

I am not delighted with the Torch. A blackberry user for since 1992, There is much to love the improvements are impressive. However three complaints:

    1. I am forced to reboot 1x-2x a day as the device seems to have a hard time multi-tasking
    2. Battery drains from a full charge to off and dead every night
    3. Time to produce some apps.

  • Cadmon

How soon the upgrade for Chinese Input and Display will be available?

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I have heard that people are having some issues. Sounds like you might want to reinstall the OS just to see if this fixes the issue.

  • Duane W

    <<< Loves his new Torch!

Seriously, though. Who has the fastest nationwide network? AT&T.
Whose network topography allows for international roaming without additional hardware? AT&T.
Who has the majority of smartphone owners in the USA? AT&T.

    No coincidence.

Apple and BlackBerry are huge because they know what they are doing.

  • Mike Smith

Torch looks great. After a very disappointing experience with the Storm (requiring three to four reboots a day even after significant tweaks and updates) and just learning that RIM has decided to play the ATT exclusivity game, I'm gone. There are better phones out there… and I won't be coddled into ATTs poor service and dropped calls. Bye Bye Blackberry.

  • Angry customer, I hate AT&T

I love the bb torch, but they were really dumb to be contracted with just at&t. You guys lost many of customers by not letting your users be with another provider. Tmobile would have been alot better or even verizon. If you cared more about you users than just making money, you would actually make more money by making your customers happy. I just wish the torch could have been with a different network other than at&t.

  • Sprinter

As a Sprint customer and long time Blackberry user, you have just lost me. Don't get me wrong. I am SO glad you have developed what you have, only you've cut me off. I am not switching carriers so I can have this phone. It is time for me to upgrade, so I guess I am going to have to go Android now. Very disappointing!

  • Disappointed Customer

I'd love to have a Torch. I would do just about anything to own one………. expect switch over to AT&T. You should of released it to other carriers like T-Mobile or Sprint. Very disappointed.

  • Really?

AT&T only … simply stupid. Terrible coverage and service in the two main cities I work in … DC and NY. Can't imagine what it's like in less populous or more remote cities. Too Bad, you had an immediate sale if it had been on Verizon.

  • Disappointed BB lover

I completely agree!!! I get everything with Sprint but as a very enthusiastic BB owner I want the torch. My coverage and plan with Sprint is so good that its not worth going to AT&T to pay more money for less service to get the torch. Maybe Sprint will get it before its outdated lol

  • Thecincireeds

Where did you hear Sprint will be the next provider to carry it?

  • Disappointed BB lover

I absolutely LOVE the BlackBerry! To be honest if they changed the keyboard I would never upgrade to another BlackBerry again. Im sure that most other BB users would agree….

  • Evieneric

I purchased the BB Torch on 8/20/10 and have returned it 3 times already and today (8/28/10) I decided to go back to my old BB and get my money back. The touch screen still has ALOT of problems. Sometimes you could use the touch screen and sometimes you had to use the toggle because the touch screen wasn't working. Blackberry couldn't fix the problem after several calls and said it was AT&T, AT&T said it was BB. Because it was the screen I tend to agree with AT&T. Once they work the kinks out I will think about purchasing it again.

  • Bviasource

there is alot wrong with att just look at the crappy plans they offer now it makes the torch usless

  • Deauxx

Well – while I agree with you completely and I amnot sure what went down with the Blackberry Torch, I know Apple approached Verizon first and Verison basically told them to go jump in a lake so they jumped in AT&T's lake.

  • Abdulla

When the Blackberry Torch 9800 will arrive to Middle east

  • Nlj1002

Yes Verizon needs the torch!!!! I have the tour and so want the torch, but I refuse to change to AT&T, their service is horrible in my area

  • Anne

Why are the best phones (iPhone and Berry Torch) on such a lousy network–AT&T. I would buy the touch if it were on a better network. That is unless at some point the iPhone gets a real keyboard. PLEASE blackberry, put the Torch or one like it on TMobile.

  • Bigmax

who is your marketing team? omg what a dumb move to make at&t exlusive! Makes me turned away from being a lifetime blackberry user! Cant wait for an iphone on verizon!

  • Love the Torch…hate AT&T

I was really excited to see the BB Torch. I have been looking for an upgrade to my Curve and I knew when I saw the Torch that this was it. Then I learned that it won't be carried by Verizon. So I guess I'll keep looking. Bad move BB on the exclusive deal with AT&T. Some of us still use the cell phone to talk on but not on the AT&T network…..I don't like having my calls dropped.

  • Reddstorm51

AVAILABLE ONLY FOR AT&T!?!?!?!?!?. ok so at&t has dibs on being the first in the market to start out cellular phone service way back in the early 80's. but since then there have been better service providers that deserve to have these available on their cell phopne inventory. and of course you have us faithful b.b. customers that LOVE getting into arguements about i-phones and blackberry's……….if this phone has an antennea issue and u pass off rubber jackets to fix this problem. i'm boycotting we're going to boycott you forever. this phone seems awesome enough. let it ship WITH balckberry 6. don't make us wait AND, if theres any issues with it. provide free repair or replacement. do do what the apple eaters did. now. when will it be available for other pcs? SPRINT? VERIZON? T-MOBILE?. thanks and god bless!

  • Dissappointed

I WAS really excited to hear about the Blackberry Torch. WAS being the key word here. That was before I found out that AT&T was the only carrier with it! I have Sprint and as much as I love my Blackberry there is no way I'd switch to an overpriced company such as AT&T. I'm due for an upgrade on 10/01/10 and was ready to get this phone only to be dissappointed. I really hope to see this phone with Sprint in the very near future. In the mean time I guess I'll be holding on to my ol' Blackberry Curve 8330.

  • ahsium

I agree…I am hoping they would to..

  • Slimnsexyme

Slimnsexy from the Bronx Says “I totally agree. I love my service with Sprint. I believe they have the most reasonable plans @ an awesome price. Why switch to ATT&T just for the phone, its not worth it. From what I hear Sprint will have it, just dont know when. Im withchu Disappointed BB lover, hopefully it wont be out dated… lol

  • VerizonCustomer

Looks great. I'm not willing to dump Verizon for AT&T to get it, though. Hopefully it'll be made available on other networks.

  • Sscf1325

OK so now the big question. when is the Torch coming to Sprint?

  • Nas

AT&T Exclusive huh!!! Thats another customer that Blackberry has lost, I am with T-Mobile and the service is phenomenal in NY, AT&T doesn't even have an unlimited data plan so Blackberry lost out of customers really using all these new features to the max….so I guess all I can say is fantastic job to the engineers and terrible job to marketing!!! What was you thinking??? Do you WANT TO LOSE MONEY FOR THE COMPANY!!! Can you guess Im a little pissed…SMH

  • Theekelso

2 complaints about the Torch: battery life is horrible. tried to lower screen brightness to increase the battery life, but to no avail. the lock button on the top always comes undone, hopefully the update will allow the right convenience key to be used as the lock button like on other BB models. otherwise, the Torch is great!

  • Kai

Somebody in Singapore is selling this set SGD1699 (USD1260). That's like a price of a laptop. Ridiculous!! I have two Blackberry Bold handsets. I am seriously thinking of switching to another type of smartphones!

  • http://www.theperfectaddress.ca/?p=9 The New BlackBerry — Toronto Dwellings

[...] that Research In Motion did make a “big” announcement yesterday. They announced the new BlackBerry Torch, a touch screen handset with a slide out [...]

  • R_Digital

Sadly, at the end of the day, Verizon is the Apple of the telecom world. It's no surprise they couldn't come to an agreement.

  • RodBWright

Yet another one, me! I am sure AT&T is really giving up the ship to get such contracts. A pure case of money talks, loyalty walks, a real kick in the teeth.

  • dr. r.l.quackenbush

I am a loyal Verizon customer who has had a BB Pearl for over 4 years. I am out of contract and have been patiently waiting for the latest, greatest BB to be offered by Verizon. I'm disappointed that only AT&T will get the Torch. Come on Verizon, honor your loyal customers with either the latest BB or iPhone.

  • Natty1220

Very frustrated that this phone is EXCLUSIVELY with ATT. I do not want ATT service. I'm a devoted Verizon customer. I REALLY REALLY hope that Blackberry decides to share this phone. What a disappointment. I love blackberry, but I do not love the decision for this phone to go to ATT.

  • Mrhaughton1

I believe it was a poor decision to give AT%T exclusive rights to the 9800. I am a Verizon customer and am trying to stay with Blackberry, but if you don't expand this phone to other carriers, you will drive some of us to other suppliers that have the tecnology as the 9800 like the Droid X or Droid 2, not that we want to, but you give us no choice.

  • SHIT

This is the same concept as the Samsung SCH 730 I had YEARS ago! @#(&$*QW((*#&$

Why would you marry this to the POS called AT&T! (@*/@(#***

  • Asongcb

I don't really mind the AT&T bit since I can get it unlock but what I am little disappointed is the battery life is really bad. It drains to quickly, I am not a heavy media or surfer but do keep the phone active with emails, sms, some surfing, rss, calls etc. I have it fully charged and switched on by 7am, fully active by 9am and by Noon my battery is half gone and by the time it hits 5pm its fully gone. Is this normal can the battery life improve so how!! I remember I had that issue with my Bold 9000 until the updated software solve the battery drain. But overall love the Torch, the touch screen is a little buggy but not a big issue for me. Slider is a little tricky to open but again not a huge issue. Love the touch screen but hate the on screen keyboard. Awesome universal search function. Webkit browser is a joy compared to all the other berries. And Mr. Lazaridis well done and thank you. Do come to Malaysia as we do need RIM here even though we only have a million berries in use. Had to go thru great lengths to get my hands on the Torch……

  • yadav

when r ur plans to launch this in INDIA?

  • Sherry Hanes

When will the Torch be available from Verizon? Verizon is the only network that provides good service in my area! And I really want a Torch!

  • Christopherk

This is a joke. BB should allow us the choice in carrier, mostly because verizon gives me a signal in my home out in the country and AT&T does not. Its great seeing other people get to use the phone they want because BB signs whatever deal (millions or billions) with AT&T. I was first excited about being a BB user – today I am disappointed and they know it – and I'm sure they could care less.

  • A.

You all are right! AT&T spent alot of money lining the pockets of BlackBerry to get that Torch! Hopefully my Sprint will get the BlackBerry Torch or Sprint may get a way Cooler Blackberry built for them!

  • Alan

What had to done with my TORCH. Give us Verizon customers a brake. I want to upgrade my BB which I really like, but my only choice is the Droid or DroidX, because the BB Storm 2 would be like going back to my first Palm (circa 2000!!). I test drove the Storm 2 the other day and I felt like a cave man trying to hack up meat with a stick, just like the above mentioned Palm. Is was great ten years ago…….but it's time to move on……quick. Giving the Torch to AT&T was a bad more all around.

  • K in northern Mich

What?!!!! No Torch for Verizon?? That's the only carrier that gets reception in my area. Guess no BB upgrade for me. Very sad…. hmmm, maybe a Droid is in my future!

  • Quequeu

AWFUL!!! Meaning Sprint will NEVER carry BB Torch?? This is terrible!! My contract expires with AT&T this Dec/’10 and I can’t wait to get out of this contract that has been disheartening to say the least! The services are not only TERRIBLE, but calls drop on a constant basis, or you simple get no coverage AT ALL! Do you not care about your consumers? Then I will make sure everyone I know., knows about this nasty little deal you have made without taking into consideration your CONSUMERS!

  • Guest

When can i see the the Torch in hong kong?

  • Zronn

I would like this to be my next phone, but I will NOT switch to crappy AT&T service just for a device.

Torch exclusive to AT&T = Fail.

  • Saturnpgh

At&t stinks in Pittsburgh. I wanted to get it for the iPhone, but my friends that have them in my neighborhood have to stand outside to get call. I can make calls fine in the house with verizon.

  • Namariah

Too bad some of your best releases are released on the worst network.

  • Babyjen222

I hope so! I still have the pearl cause it is so small and they hadn’t made one better. I was tempted to go to a samsung rogue or something. tried the storm 2 don’t like only having a touch screen because they are well touchy lol! Anyway, i like the new torch combining the touch and keyboard is awesome. Please…please… give it to Verizon :o )

The light on the keys at the bottom of my torch screen wont go out while on calls and it makes the phone gets realy hot and sucks the life out of my battery

  • WHY?! : (

i really want this phone! but i live in the middle of NOWHERE where Verizon is the ONLY carrier that gives any type of service. PLEASE TAKE THE EXCLUSIVELY AT ATT&T AWAY.

  • WhyNotSprint_Blackberry?

I own a Blackberry Tour and would like to have the Torch. I do not want to leave my present carrier, Sprint. It's not in the best interest of my taste or customer satisfaction. Please acknowledge my and as I read here several other customer requests. No one company should hold an exclusive on this to make it a fair market competition. If companies stand behind their reputation then availability of hardware elesewhere shouldn't change a thing except for Blackberry's ability to pull in some revenue!

  • BB Girl:)

BB please get it together! Your loyal users (myself included) are waiting desperately for you to expand to the other carriers (I NEED U ON SPRINT PRONTO). I will never switch to another phone as I am a BLACKBERRY ADDICT! But come on AT&T? What in the world??? Exactly how long are we gonna have to wait for the TORCH! Hopefully by Christmas 2010 PLEASE!!!!! I refuse to go to AT&T. My loyalty is with BB, but it is stronger with SPRINT!

  • Pmgiles73

I not only want but need a full screen BB to more easily read downloads, but I'm sure not going to give up Verizon's network to get at&t's sketchy service. My friend and I were in the North Carolina mtns this weekend, and as we were being given directions, she lost her at&t signal, but I still had my Verizon signal — if I could see it.

  • Goredsox

When will this device be available for Verizon? ATT's network does not measure up to the needs of long time BB users.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Pavel

    Hello,

Does it do this all the time? Do you have any 3rd party applications installed on the BlackBerry smartphone? I suggest backing up the device then performing a security wipe as shown here: http://bit.ly/di72gD

    Thank you

  • Disteabag

Only AT&T? You guys are dumb.

  • Kdmansberger

Another market share mistake by RIM guess that is why their stock prices are down. Being born in a generation that demanded quality decisions or pay the ultimate professional price you can understand why young inexperienced people are hired for a song and without loyalty value to current and future customers. Who ever was promised a large kickback for this bumble should be forever banned from any future marketing employ.

  • Good bye Blackberry

I've been a Verizon customer since cell phones first came out. Why oh why would you give an exclusive to At & T. I wish you knew how many times a friend that has At& t borrows my phone to make a call. I have been very loyal to Blackberry but I guess it is time to go. Short term profits + short sightedness. Very hard to get a customer back, but I'm now gone

  • ex VZ guy

Maybe Verizon didn't want a Torch offering to dilute the wave of folks going to a Verizon iPhone early next year.

  • Nashidah16

I love my phone yup been with att for six years i

  • Sprint User

SPRINT wants the Torch! Please please please!

  • 2911chris

The slow sales of Blackberry Torch at AT&T should tell both companies something. 1.) Blackberry has gotten lazy and produces product that was potentially cutting edge 12 to 24 months ago. Smartphone buyers, when given other options (across the same network) want smooth browsing, customizability, and a future of apps. 2.) AT&T should realize people move away from other providers for the iPhone. Their clunky network and (in my experience) poor customer experience is not appreciated.

I now have an Incredible and do not like the interface vs. my BB Curve that finally died. Even though the BB doesn't have all the apps and potential abilities of Android, it simply works for Business. With the exception of a few other mis-steps re: sync with PC and Mac, I'd have bought the Torch unquestionably if it were available at Verizon.

  • CLord2911

I think the keyboard makes the BB a superior E-mailing platform. The 8300 series curve keyboard (minus the ball) was better than the 8700 Bold keyboard, but both are easier and faster than the 4″ wide sliders like the Droid.

  • Chrissy

I agree, this is why it is hard to create the “perfect phone” I have no problem with the keyboard but I am also a girl and have many guy friends who have an issue with the keyboard because men tend to have larger fingers. LOVE the idea of comming out with numerous styles, comming out with a new one every 2 months just makes people mad because they just upgraded. At the end of the day, its all business

  • Blake_edwards211

  • stunned BB loyalist

extremely disappointed with RIM's strategy here. going exclusive with AT&T is a slap in the face to the millions of loyal Verizon customers that DIDN'T rush out and buy an iPhone.

thanks RIM for pushing me to hope for the iPhone with Verizon so i can switch as soon as possible. what a bunch of idiot's you guys are.

  • frustrated BB loyalist

when your company has 15 phones with verizon and all of them blackberry's, no, this is not an easy thing to switch. i see you, like the RIM executives, do not think out a scenario before you go through with operations. yes, this feels like a smack in the face. RIM executives didn't think this through and/or didn't ask many of their existing customers. it is easy to see that this decision comes from weakness and desperation as well as a lack of understanding of their core customers that have supported them for so many years.

makes it very easy to consider another phone. this will go down as a very bad decision and one that will certainly lessen Blackberry's importance in the smartphone world.

  • verizon BB moving to droid

why don't you or someone at blackberry respond to the hundred's of post's expressing the discontent with the decision to release exclusively on AT&T. you are losing way more business than you're gaining. i don't understand. it's completely frustrating and absolutely mind blowing the bad decision that has been made.

  • mo11ymonkey

I have been trying to search to find out for sure, but it sounds a lot like Tune-Yards to me.

  • mo11ymonkey

yeah, i just heard it again. I am positive it's Tune-Yards.

  • mo11ymonkey

    it's Tune-Yards.

  • D308

I concur with the general sense that AT&T is a slower and much spottier coverage network than Verizon. I truly like the Torch I played with in a mall, but may go Android after several years with RIM. I think bringing the phone out with Verizon quickly would be smart- but how often can they do that? If it's as long as the iphone wait, the Torch BB phone will be old news and OBE'ed. I will not switch networks to get a new phone but I will switch phone brands to stay with my network . . .

  • Rahu306

The service charges or replacement of Screen is very expensive in Blackberry . It makes me not to go for blackberry in future . The cost of Repair is almost to equal to the cost of new blackberry handset . Why do they charge so much for the spares and repair ? Does RIM takes customer for a toss ?This will make Blackberry will not be worth to purchase .

  • Jem_duke

Has anyone ever heard of competitive advantage?!? Blackberry is keeping up with their target market. They do have several different phones, but they are carried by different providers. They have flip phones coming, the full QWERTY keyboards, and touch screens!

  • Waiting for Torch in INDIA

I like the Phone in first look but still not clear about the launch date for INDIA. Can anybody please help me out with that?………& Why don't we have Global Launches in this Info Savy age?….I am listening about this BB since its launch & still nobody is there to tell me about its INDIA launch date?

  • Kclayton

I am again utterly disappointed that you have chosen AT&T as the only outlet for the torch. Why do we verizon customers have to get all the seconds…. some of us do not want to support AT& T due to their contributions to certain political parties…YOU GUYS SUCK!

  • deborah

    why only at&t?

  • Jmbridges1977

I bet the torch is a great phone, touch screen; Webkit browser; slide out Qwerty keyboard; 5 mp camera; OS 6, and so much more. Unfortunately I will not be experiencing any of that because I don't like AT&T!!! Well sorry RIM but you have lost what up till now has been a very faithful customer. I would jump through hoops, I would lay down in a tank full of snakes, I would even maybe switch to Verizon (MAYBE) but I am sorry RIM I can not do AT&T. So if you aren't selling the Torch or a comparable model within the next few month when I'm looking to replace my already old 8900, it looks like you're loosing another customer to DROID, or Windows or maybe Apple. I really hope this isn't goodbye but I know like all big companies, you guys won't hear me or my fellow AT&T haters so GOODBYE!!!!

  • Walnutpaste

    Hi,

  • Champ Yarbrough

3 days after purchase, my Torch fell from about 1.5 feet and the screen shattered. AT&T has kindly offered to sell me a new phone at full price and says there is no repair option. Since there is no way to use a sleeve to protect the phone and Blackberry/AT&T apparently doesn't plan on backing up the Torch, if you plan to actually depend on your phone for work stick with the Bold or the Curve. As the person responsible for procuring 1,000 + smart phones a year for my company you can be sure that we won't be buying or supporting the Torch in our environment it simply isn't up to the task.

  • Bestred77

Am frustated by the exclusive to AT&T, it's only going to make RIM sell fewer phones. I love my T-Mobile service and won't leave it even for the Blackberry Torch, which is making me salivate in a way the i-Phone never did. The Torch is sexy, but the AT&T nightmares are still too fresh in my mind… Next time consider the customers too.

i want to knw abt d latest developments btwn blackberry n indian govnmnt..?? are all the matters resolved .?? i m willing to buy blackberry torch az sun az it gets released.

  • Daff K Jones

LOL, who uses Blackberry these days? They are the MySpace of smartphones. Half the RAM and much slower processor than even the low-end Android handsets out there, and Blackberry OS is losing its edge against a rapidly developing open source movement (android/maemo). Please give us something new, we don't want you to turn into another Palm.

Will Verizon Wireless get the Blackberry Torch?

  • Killahdef

I have a torch and the phone is awesome!!!! Ha ha!!!! Just a bunch of unhappy customers with verizon, who's carrier doesn't give a damn about them!! Have we all forgotten where apple went first with the iphone, and got turned down??? VERIZON! Don't be mad, just switch to at&t. I've been a customer and employee for them for 7+ yrs… We have nooo problems. :)

  • Jason

I am very disappointed that I cannot get this phone with Verizon. I have been holding off for several months on replacing my curve, waiting on this device. I guess I will just get a Droid, or wait a few months and get an iPhone.

  • JP

I love the BB and have had several different ones. Several in our family have the 9700 and have our service with T-Mobile. We are very anxious to get the “Torch” or something similiar with T-Mobile. It seems like T-Mobile is always the last to get the latest, greatest phones available.

  • LukeyB2

I'll just echo what everyone else has already said. AT&T sucks. Bad call. I was really excited about this phone until I saw the network it's on. I'm on Sprint and would love a Torch on Sprint. I would even consider switching to Verizon, but a big no thank you to AT&T.

  • Vtech13

    THE BOTTOM LINE……………..

If I made the best of the best Smartphone, I would want it sold through the company that has the best of the best service, so your customers would get the best use of it. Who makes these stupid decisions anyway.

  • Ang780

I too am a loyal BB and Verizon customer. My entire family uses Verizon so switiching carriers is NOT an option; not to mention I have been extremely please with my Verizon coverage. So WHY did you give exclusive rights to AT&T??? Wasn't the iPhone enough for them?? All us loyal BB users desserve the opportunity to upgrade to the latest and greatest but alas the loyal user must not be of significance in decisions such as these…boo! : (

I might be delighted with it if the BlackBerry Torch was available through Verizon. But, since BB signed an exclusive contract with a lackluster cell company, I won't be able to enjoy the Torch.
    Gee, thanks for screwing up.

  • BB FAN

Will sprint get the torch within the next year?! I want it but I don't want to switch to att!! does anyone know what the contract with bb and att entails?!

  • Scottw57

And the problem with the Droid is you can't sync directly with Outlook. WTF? These companies are sooooooooooostupid. I'm up for a new phone but nothing really out there at verizon better than what I have now. This Torch looks like the answer but can't get it..

  • Down With Monopolies!

I will stay anonymous, but want to make it clear right of the bet…I am not advertising T-Mobile rather stating my experience over now 10+ years. I am subscriber form the early days of Voicestream the first GSM provider in US, during the times when all other carriers ignore it!! never had any major issues and come to find over years as I used them as my corporate providers along with other carriers, to be the one with THE BEST customer support, THE BEST sales staff , however provider that had the poorest device offering in US. So all this said I agree with the comment above and all subsequent when it comes to device manufacturers and their hard on with AT&T a Texas scam like Verizon has been. Often unreliable, customer care rude, unavailable, contracts always and always only and only favoring them as providers, and consumer left without much options. All reasons I stuck with TMobile regardless of the fact that it is smallest network with far less offering when it comes to devices, however all other great and very much acceptable under best pricing! I am BIG TIME Apple inc product user and advocate, but will not buy iPhone ever , never ever ever ever while on AT&T or iPad for that matter. And then what is wrong with RIM, smoking something heavily at their board rooms to stick with AT&T ????

I am a Verizon customer and would like to upgrade my Blackberry to the Torch. AT&T service is terrible in most area’s so I am very disappointed that Verizon does not have this phone. Somebody at Blackberry talk to Verizon…..please……

AT&T has the iPhone… that and Droid are the direct competition of the Blackberry, right? If Blackberry gives it to AT&T it can directly take away from iPhone sales. Don’t get me wrong, it sucks because I have Sprint, but it makes perfect marketing sense. It’s not an attempt to get people to switch to AT&T, but for AT&T folks to upgrade to the Torch versus the iPhone. As for the rest of us, we’re gonna wait cause we can do nothing else. We don’t want AT&T, and we really don’t want Droid… so I say great work on the marketing Blackberry, but PLEASE don’t make us wait too long. Or at least work out all of the bugs by the time you sell it via Sprint.

  • Disgruntled Customer

The Blackberry Torch is my dream blackberry but I am with t-mobile. I refuse to switch to AT&T. Thanks RIM for screwing up my dream.

  • Samantha

I talked to a sprint worker yesterday, he said they would be getting none of the touch blackberrys.

  • Geo622

The Blackberry Torch is the phone I been waiting for a long long time.,but I refuse to leave Sprint after 11 years of great service to get it… I am do for an upgrade on Nov 1rst and my fav customer care agent at Sprint said new BB will be release this month, but no one knows which one…since I doubt they will give my carrier something close to the Torch ,The HTC EVO,or Palm Pre are the only other phones worth having..
Why do an exclusive with AT&T when they only promote the IPhone???????

  • Adrian Perez

is it just for att? for tmobile?

I Want This Phone But I Have Been Hearing Bad Review About The Blackberry Torch That It Broke Down And That The Email’s Dont Send At All The Singals Not As Good

  • Jillybean101

AT&T already has the iPhone. I’m a solid Verizon customer and will not leave to get the new Torch on AT&T. I’ve been holding out for the new BB on Verizon and you guys release it exclusively to AT&T? Looks like my new phone will be a Droid since my Curve is so outdated and slow that I can’t wait for an announcement when Verizon will get a new BB. So sad. And I loved my BB too.

  • Jillybean101

The BB Storm has an on screen keyboard

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Ice-babes please remember when you are on a blog and that most of what you will read will be bad… not because the device is bad but this is because most people that don’t have issues don’t make a note to come one to the internet just to say it is an awesome device. Just like anything electronic there could be some lemons but these are taken care of very quickly by the carrier or RIM and replaced. I have had my Torch for almost 1 month now and this phone is awesome. It is very early in its life running BlackBerry 6 so yes there will be some hiccups and bug fixing but that is expected with a brand we OS.. Look at Windows 7 as an example they are great now but early adopters did have to realize there might be a few hiccups but that they would be fixed as they were found. In talking to people myself with issues I normally find out that the majority of these people try for help once but because of a bad experience with a carriers support they don’t try again and give up. This just compounds the problem as they are frustrated and feel like there is no help to fix it.

I would go into your local store and ask if there is a 30 day money back guarantee just so you can see for yourself what this device can do for you. Remember on the internet unless the person is a real technology blogger or credited device expert then their opinion is just that, an opinion. Don’t let other make your mind up for you!

  • http://www.SheRocS.com SheRocS

When is SPRINT going to get any new blackberry with this Blackberry 6 operating system? And why does it take FOREVER for SPRINT to get any new Blackberries? It’s ridiculous how behind every other cell phone company we are. So, I’d like some info from Blackberry if possible.
    Thanks!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CU2GYKHASTJRAGGESOSW7ZL6ZA Joseph

Does Black berry not get it? Tmobile’s customer’s love the TOUCH screen. The Samsung Vibrant has sold 5 millon phones. That’s Iphone numbers. Us Adults that have Tmobile don’t have a professional touch screen phone. I have 7 friends of mine that have switch to HTC, and Iphone. They loved their Blackberry’s but couldn’t wait for new technology.

BLACKBERRY IS MISSING OUT BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE that APPLE made. Exclusivity stopped Apple from having a monopoly on the telecommunication market. Now Blackberry is just giving the marketplace back to Apple. If you bring the torch or a phone like it to Tmobile, I am 100% certain that Blackberry would reclaim the number one spot.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Corey

    Hello,

Is the device actually powering down and then you have to power it back on?

  • Schuyler Loughrey

Well its also the technology used in much of asia and is a more effecient way of broadcasting for cell phones…. also a though

  • RR

Hey, at least you guys on GSM networks will be able to buy an unlocked phone and still use it with other carriers. Those of us on Verizon won’t have that option.

  • http://twitter.com/deepbeige Julian Pillars

it needs to come to verizon as a dual mode phone (GSM/CDMA) or just CDMA, either way I want it

  • Ms

    What about SPRINT
    best wireless phone company around.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZLCEM3JLIENHVAIXLYWU2XV264 moranda

I agree….AT&T is over-priced. I have T-mobile and their prices are $30-40 cheaper, in plan-prices. I just think Blackberry doesn’t care about their customer base. You got to remember their phones are pretty high to, but that isn’t my grip at the moment. I think ‘our’ right to chose and our desire of what seems to be a demand …has went down the toilet and has fell on deaf ears with Blackberry. Hey, maybe a better phone will emerge and I’ll buy that, with my provider.

  • Gahomewizard

My husband is with AT&T and has an IPhone. He never drops calls. I am with Sprint because of their unlimited plan and love their service. I just wish they would stay current with the phones like the new Blackberry Torch. I have a Blackberry Tour and have loved it but would definitely upgrade if I had the chance. I had to wait a long time to get a good Blackberry at Sprint. I think the Curve is awful, but that’s just me. Would love the chance to get the Torch

  • Gahomewizard

    I totally agree with you.

  • Pjolly56

Ok RIM.. Now that you have released the best BB out there, on the worst, most expensive network, when can we expect a CDMA version of this phone?

  • Stockjock

100% agree. Been with T-mobile over 7 years now…use it all over the world and very rarely had any problems…best customer service of any company I have ever worked with. I am with T-mobile for life

  • Shashwat yashaswi

    would tour 9630 get Blackberry6?

  • Verizon Lover

I talked to Verizon yesterday and they’re getting the Torch as their holiday phone. They have marketing material already but no shipments of the phone quite yet.

  • AT&Tisthebest

I have to disagree with you slaughtering AT&T. I have been with them for more than 4 years and have not had one single problem with any of the service. I have never had to worry about losing bars, and can always make a call or send a message if I need too. Most of the time I find I have better service than my friends with T-Mobile or Verizon. AT&T is the best network in my opinion, and they cover the most. I don’t see why people cut them down. And they have a 10 year contract with the most popular phone ever. Apple didn’t choose them for nothing, they must be doing something right. Go AT&T!!

  • Lloydtomberlin

Does anyone know how to use the tprch with att – we need good coverage in europe & USA.

  • Nick

So you’d rather they release at feb with an unfinished product rather then say ‘Hey guys, not quite ready yet, be there asap!’?

I’m sure you’d be the first in line to tell them that releasing unfinished products was just not acceptable and that they had to get their act together etc etc.

If you want them to be like apple and give NO notice or news at all until something is actually launched then yay for you… I prefer to know whats coming.

  • NK

My husband has At&T and I have Tmobile. We have been customers for around 7 years each. Long story short, customer service with At&T has been horrible. I did look into a family plan with At&T (we have our DSL and landline with them) but they messed our account so badly – overcharges, misquoted our plans and shipped me a wrong phone that I finally went back to Tmobile. The Tmobile rep helped sort the mess out for me. Even called the At&T rep for me. A visit to the At&T store was also an unpleasant experience.

  • Dwainerobert

This phone brings so much promise, but yet is set up for a demise with the choice of a lackluster provider in many peoples opinions! I admit AT&T probably has the best selection of mobile phones, however it comes at a price! Pick your poison, lack of focus on investing in next gen network, customer service, or plan price point. Sound familiar? All networks have strong & not so strong markets; good & bad associates, but it’s how they respond, innovate & truly reach the mass market appeal is what matters most. A company like blackberry with such sound business principles and conservative business approach would do a great job selling their own devices similar to how google tried. Your product is more stabilized & accepted. Why continue these exclusive contracts? I understand the money you make off the devices is great but I can only imagine how greater an anticipated device such as this one would be accepted so multiply sales of the device to date by 4 the possibilities seem glass half full. Me? I am a sprint customer didnt see many sprint customers post comments here. However, I thought with the challenges they had in the past more mobile phone makers would see that as an golden opportunity to invest and utilize a organization as a platform to create further technologies in the market and advance our mobile phones up to par with the likes of their counterparts in Asia. Not so much, I’ve grown to respect the company though not touting as the greatest with the exception of price point. Just wish products like this are provided with the customer at the forefront and not segmented groups.

  • Kmkahn

When will the BlackBerry Torch be available at T-Mobile?

  • Kmkahn

I agree. I like my t-Mobile plan and service for my Pearl 8120 and am looking forward to moving up to the Torch. When will it be available at t-Mobile? I’m unwilling to switch to AT&T for more money and less service.

  • MrStylz

“CDMA only exists in the US…” That is so far from the truth… Russia, Middle East, and Africa have millions of subscribers running on CDMA networks. http://www.cdg.org/

Also, Vodafone holds nearly 50% stake in verizon…so one could technically make that argument.

Anyway, not saying I think CDMA is great, just correcting some common misconceptions.

  • Ehtasham Mallick

I am having a problem with my Blackberry Torch keyboard the Y key is typing Z and the Z key is typing Y anyone know how to fix it ? Or should I return it ?

  • Scotth411

AT&T does have Great service! I was with them for 6 1/2 years, I loved the coverage and service, BUT…… AT&T bent me over backwards and emptied my pockets, and I did not realize how much I was wasting till I switched to a different carrier. So I guess if service and coverage is the high priority and money does not matter then I would agree with you and say that AT&T is the best????

Try to go through the following clean application load process: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11320

Also make sure you test before restoring any backup. If this does not correct the issue, contact your service provider for further support.

  • Angeleena Mulligan

I agree with everyone…BB when will Torch become available to the Sprint community?

  • James Conway

Watch Crackberry’s review of the new Blackberry Torch 9800 (it’s on YouTube). Count how many times the phone is sluggish, unresponsive, or actually freezes on the user. It turns out you DO need a faster processor. It’s clear as day in the video.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

I have been running my Torch for over a month now. I notice here and there stuff but not once have I said “come on” or “hurry up”. I use some of my friends iPhone 4 and sorry but it is twice as slow on some things not all but some. That is my personal opinion but it’s based on real life testing and experience, what’s yours based on? other people testing? Plus don’t take into account that these devices that crackberry.com get are running pre released code so that they can review them before they are released. But that would take an actual structured approach at a proper review of a device and not just a consumption of other peoples opinion as fact and make them their own! Put the phone in your hand and use it before stating it sucks because until you use it your opinion is not your own but what everyone else is telling you to say. I have tested and played with a lot of iphone, android, and BlackBerry devices so my opinion is my own. Does not make it right because it is just that an opinion, but it is my opinion based on my own research and not someone else’s.

  • Lou

My BB Torch will turn itself off and reboot when rechargeing and at other times for no reason. Is this a common occurance or do I have a lemon?

  • Kmkahn

I tried a Droid for 1 day and was thoroughly annoyed when I found out it couldn’t sync with Outlook. Cool features, if you can figure out how to touch that screen exactly right, but no Outlook info was a real bummer and a huge amount of work which I wasn’t willing to undergo. T-mobile needs to get real…get the BB Torch and keep your best customers from walking…

HOW MUCH IS THIS PHONE + -

  • Georgiporgie008

I have been a BB user for 3 years. Started on Alltel and when they became Verizon I got the Storm as it had just came out! I LOVE my touch screen, but miss my keyboard for my more formal precise messages, and then I saw a friend with the Torch! I was HEARTBROKEN when I found out they were only on AT&T, the company with the WORST coverage and service out of all of them. I can’t say who is the best but I think everyone knows AT&T covers on an inch by inch basis, and you can drop a call just about anywhere. I am super excited to hear that the Torch will be coming to Verizon, because I have to have it and I refuse to be an AT&T customer!

  • Disgusted!

I don’t want to be the person to put ‘yet another’ unnecessary nail in the coffin. But, I believe that USA Mobile market has grown quite rapidly and is far behind Asia and Europe markets. My view is that the providers are responsible for holding the technology at bay.

If you wish, you may want to research personal turnover (upgrade) of devices per phone number. You may be shocked to find that in many markets, a single phone number registers a new device every 4-6 months while in the US market, it is far less.

I, personally, upgrade my device once every 6 months. And, every time, it is because my carrier does not offer a recent device.

I have been using blackberry since the 8700 series and I am awe to learn that when devices come out, they are locked to a certain provider without an option to purchase an unbranded device. Your competition, HTC, Nokia, HP, etc. offers almost every device independent of the vendor.

Assimilating this concept (as foreign as it is to you), may help with your R&D costs allowing your offer the device at a reasonable price and retain profits as well.

i buy blackberry torch but the problem is how to use? i need help….

  • Michael Craig

I just upgraded from the 8830 to the Torch recently and so far I’m really enjoying the phone – with one major exception. I travel a lot on business and one of the most useful features for me is the GPS. However it doesn’t work on the Torch?? Bell Canada tells me it isn’t supported and that Blackberry is working on a fix but…… Bell also neglected to point this out when I purchased it??? I’m a a wee bit disgruntled.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Corey

    Hey Michael,

The BlackBerry Torch does have GPS capability, when you go into BlackBerry Maps press the menu key and select start GPS navigation.

  • Verizon Lover

I’m sorry… but everyone that is with T-Mobile or At&t does not realize what they are missing out on./ I have been with Verizon for over 10 years. I have an iPad on at&t’s network, and when I compared the service between the two devices, Verizon can NOT be beat! Verizon has the best service! I have not EVER been inb a situation where I had no service. I have the Blackberry Bold, and I am extremely happy with it. If you are ever second guessing anything about your Wireless carrier, switch to Verizon. They have great service, VERY fair prices on phones and plansm great customer care. It just doesn’t get better than Verizon

    i want one soo badly

  • Elizabethleighh

so no chance that verizon will get the torch?

  • Jeff_cavalier

You are most likely just sour because you got fired. The fact of the matter is, AT&T and Verizon are soon going to be the only two carriers because they have the best service. Now when it comes to customer service, I dont know, but good customer service dont get you far. Walk into wal-mart and see how good the customer service is and they are the monopoly of retail. All I am saying is BB is only going to be with ATT. THe makers of BB Torch were smart because ATT holds most cell phone users person for person in the US.. SO why not because people are going to buy it. Sprint is cheap because its crap. T-mobil will most likely be around only for another three years or so. It will come down to verizon and ATT. THe differences will become slim and the phones will all be the same. So just say if you like the torch or not and shut up already. You all sound like a bunch of girls… I love my Torch.

  • T-mobile User, BB Lover

I absolutley love my BB, but I also love my service with T-mobile. I really hope the Torch comes to T-mobile.

  • Avanes

Here is my story. I’m in Minneapolis-St Paul area.

My company was on T-Mobile. Nothing’s wrong with T-Mobile, but the my T-Mobile salesperson (whom I liked a lot) left the company and I started re-evaluating our cell phone needs, just to see if there was anything better. That was 6 weeks ago…

Contacted Verizon, ATT and Sprint – they were readily available to provide me quotes, and all three quotes were better pricing wise than T-Mobile – of course, when you’re bidding on a new account with a liitle over 200 lines, 160 of them are smartphones, you can go low…

Anyway, got their flagship phones (carrier salespeople choices) to test for a week. Verizon gave me BB9650, Sprint gave me Evo and ATT gave me Samsung Galaxy S.

I gave all these phone to my delivery drivers along with a daily report sheet. They go all over Twin Cities and around 100 mile outside of metro area daily.

Verizon was OK, no major problems there. Reception was good… But the salesperson was really snotty and full of himself and his network, that I desided not to go with them. If he’s like that when he’s trying to make a sale, I can only imagine what it would have been after I sign the contract…

ATT was DROPPING CALLS! My drivers call customers 1/2 hr before delivery and they call dispatch before they pull to customers’ site and when they pull out – on average 70 calls a day. They said it was awful. Sorry ATT-lovers, I’m not making this up. Also, as soon as you’re 10 miles outside of metro area, forget the 3G, you’re on EDGE. So no ATT for me, despite very good salesperson and GREAT devices.

Sprint was great. As reliable as Verizon, knowledgeble salesperson, flexibility to match our needs… and no so great devices.

I went with Sprint. A little over a month so far. Happy. Perfect feedback from drivers and salespeople.

At the same time the owner of the company wanted to have iPhone4. Wanted it bad. So he went with ATT – not a big deal. Only not a big deal, because he’s an owner and he can hang up on whomever he wants too, anytime – that’s the benefit of being the owner of the company.
If my salespeople were dropping calls like that while talking with their customers, they’d choke me by now (they’re on commissions). Owner’s wife got ATT too – she picked HTC Aria. Dropping calls as well. But nothing I can do about it – the bought a family plan (retail), so they are on their own. Thinking of leaving ATT, paying early termination fees.

The moral of the story? RIM, you screwed up. Giving TORCH to ATT exclusively you’ve giving it to the network that will not give it’s users the taste of the power and a beauty of your new flagship device.
Why do it? I guess with it’s exclusivity ATT is conrtibuting more to the cover the cost of your devices, but I’m sure that you’d make much more with the volume if this was not limited to one carrier in the US.

i cant believe RIM wont just give everybody access to the torch or storm regardless which carrier we have…….BB’s are great and I’m a loyal user however if this goes on I’m really taking my loyalty and money to another brand……

I think it is very sad that T mobile does not hav this phone.I have had a berry for over 8 years and also been with t mobile for almost the same.Maybe i should dump both of them thanks to RIM and T mobile for nothing.

  • Bali

While a carrier does decide, your hardware also only caters to AT&T. As an example the frequencies used on the 9800 for 3G wont work on T-Mobile, only EDGE does; and you have no CDMA capabilities at all. Why wasn’t the phone designed with a capable wireless chip and sold as an unlocked version for the consumer to choose?
You also can market to the carriers to pick up on your devices, and share much of the advertising dollars to get the marketing out there to the public. It’s a partnership in selling and marketing a phone, something of which is exclusive in this instance…
That said, the phone was created with one carrier in mind it would seem, AT&T.

  • Olympia333

Totaly agree with you on all points! I like both the Torch and iPhone but plan on staying a loyal fan and customer of T-Mobile.

  • SR

I’ve been a customer at ATT for over 10 years now. I just called ATT, after trying multiple times to online, email (never responded to) and an online chat to upgrade one of my 3 phone contracts to the new Torch. I was told several reasons (guesses) why I was not able to receive the $99 discount. ATT is not letting current customers upgrade their phones to the Torch for $99. Only new customers are able to take advantage of this is what it boils down to. I was even told I could not upgrade because it was not my main line, which I explained I tried that also and it didn’t work…then was told I could not be helped because all of their systems are down… after over an hour wait. It would cost me less than the $199 price of the Torch to get rid of ATT and that’s what I’m probably going to do. Unreal! I pay over $150 / month right now for ATT and that’s just my cell phone(s) plan. New customers aren’t going to provide the income they are losing from loyal ‘old’ customers.

my bb get freeze every time

  • Lucky

Yeah you’ve lived in all those “MAJOR METRO CITIES” big deal every provider reaches those!! I’m with the rest of the world that isn’t surrounded by big buildings and can still see the stars at night that say AT&T SUCKS!! We don’t even get their service unless you’re on the insterstate highway and thats central Kansas the middle of the country.

BlackBerry Torch is really an awesome phone and good things it’s an slider phone.Who loves blackberry and slider too than it’s best phone for them and fully loaded function…

  • I want my Torch!

I too have verizon and I currently use a BB Pearl 8130. I REALLY want the Torch but verizon still doesn’t have it. This is rediculous!!! Set my people free and let them choose the phones and carriers they want!!!

  • Ktle

I’m pretty much repeating what everyone has said on here but I was very disappointed that the Torch is ONLY available to AT&T user. Why don’t they make it available for every carrier? Did they consider that people will NOT switch carriers just for a phone? Signing an exclusive contract was stupid.

  • Frances Keefe

I’ll be delighted when it’s available on a network other than AT&T, since they offer terrible coverage where I live (and in lots of other places, I’m hearing). Such a shame…

  • Beanlee77

Why AT&T? If I were to switch from Verizon to AT&T, I would get the iPhone. I love my BB Curve. I would like very much to have a Torch.

  • Mccabej2

  • Cesar Panduro

    Hi, i’m from lima Peru
I had been changed 3 of this model in my carrier “Claro – Peru”, all have a problem of temperature, Torch getting so hot after 10min of use. About 40 – 42C°, i’m sure this is not a normal temperature. What can i do? the carrier does not want to change me for another Torch anymore.

  • BlackBerryHelp_Corey

    Hey Mccabej2,

Does this happen if you send the picture as an MMS as well?

  • Hahahaha

LOL, looks like if all these comments were written by people that work for T-Mobile, that company is worse than the cheap prepaid companies, if they had a decent service they would raise their prices, AT&T, so far the best service I’ve ever had, expensive? maybe, but if you want the good things in life pay for them, if not then settle for a cheap service that I’m sure most of the time is bad.

  • Raiders1124

I have AT&T and the blackberry torch and i love them both, i’ve never had a problem with at&t, me and my wife have been with them for ten years, i have also had a contract with sprint and verizon and they both where horriable. I dont pay alot for my bill and i have unlimited data, minutes, txt, insurance, blackberry data charge and a family plan and its cheaper then everyone else, im just saying at&t isn’t all that bad, and we all know that ALL the companys are getting rich off us.

  • Mariamarcalerof

T Mobile should have it right away! It’s a “must” , why AT&T gets the best deals and exclusive to their company?

  • I want my Torch!

Come on RIM…Open up access to the Torch for other formerly loyal users of your products. I currently use a BB Pearl 8130 on the Verizon network and want to upgrade to the Torch but have been shut out due to stupid back room deals. Haven’t you heard that Consumer Reports has rated AT&T the worst provider. What an enormously ignorant decision to have an exclusive carrier!

  • David Lasso

curve 3g 9300 also run os 6 ? what about those who alredy have it in a curve 3g ?

  • Shw

BINGO on RIM (Really Impotent Marketing) denying Verizon customers their optimal touchscreen product. Verizon will win and likely with the iphone and droid.

i got the bb torch just 2 days before….I am with Rogers guess depending on different countries may be but all of the service providers have it here except Fido.

  • ADALGISAGILBERT

hey ya’ll, like LOL i totally agree with ya all, like for real i am getting on e for my b-DAY’S

  • Elbaerta

Seriously, you gotta hear this….It’s pretty funny. In a sort of a “I hope I won’t feel really stupid for the next 2 years of the ATT contract for my new Torch 9800 phone” way. Cause you see, I got this phone (actually, I went with Blackberry at all) because a friend had the Life in Pocket ap on her BB and I thought it was better than anything on my kids Iphones. So I got my hands on an free Blackberry Curve 8320, downloaded the LIP ap and discovered to my dismay that the 8320 is perhaps the only BB made that doesn’t have on board GPS, I guess that explains the “free” part). What to do? I figure, “Hey…this is an ap built just for Blackberreys, so I’ll go get the latest and greatest BB and I’ll be all set. Low and behold, I get this Torch, go to your site only to discover LIP doesn’t have a compatible version for the Torch! Who would have figured you guys wouldn’t be on top of developing for the BB os6 and the webkit environment? Did RIM keep it a secret from you till the last minute.

OK, That’s my story and, of course, I’m sticking to it. Have a Merry Christmas or chanukah or Kwanzaa or whatever you are into, relax for a few days and then get back in there and make this great application work like gangbusters on my torch.

Your friend and admirere (though slightly tarnished for the moment

    ElBaerta.

  • Rkonidaris

Does anyone know if Sprint will carry the BB Torch ?

  • http://www.twitter.com/BlackBerryHelp BlackBerryHelp_Brian

    Hey Sugaluka,

Device availability is determined by the wireless provider. You may want to contact them for more information.

  • Ron

Too bad the keyboard on the Torch is such a disappointment. Where is the glossy finish and the snap to the keys that make the Bold 9700 such a great device? It looks and feels cheap. Not to mention the low color resolution and underpowered processor. Blackberry can do better than this.

  • Musicdevine

I don’t believe the people at RIM even look at these forums, and it really is shameful

  • Ammowife95

I compared Verizon and At&T with sprint and they could not even offer me Half of what sprint does at the price I pay. I just wish They would make all cell phones Universal so You can pick which carrier you want to go with. Maybe one of these days.. LOL They are finally starting to make most the chargers universal for all phones…

  • Sandsimpson

I’ve had the Torch for a week now..It’s become a love/hate relationship. When it’s working I LUV it!!!!!
When it freezes, lock the keys at will, jump to different apps..I HATE IT!!!!! Is it the phone or the carrier? Will be returning phone tomorrow Will either go back to my iphone or switch carriers for another BB

  • Spokanelawschool

I’m no At&t fan, but they’re miles better than Verizon. I don’t see that Sprint or T-Mobile are any better than At&t either. I agree it would be nice to have the Torch available on the other three major networks, but we need to remember we don’t know all of the reasons BB made its decision to go exclusive with At&t. I switched to At&t to get the Torch, and personally will sign with whatever network I need to in order to get the best BB on the market. However, I do hope BB will at least stay with At&t, that’s where most of their loyal customers are.

  • Spokanelawschool

At&t is far from abusive. They’re not great at customer service, but to be fair Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint are no better. I do agree that it would be great to see the BB TOrch on other networks though!!!

  • Spokanelawschool

True that its not just in US, but GSM is still he global standard and widely considered better. That may be partly the reason Apple, BB sign exclusivity deals w/ ATT.

  • Amysweet94

has the torch got Blackberry messanger even if i dont get internet package with my monthly contract

  • Witney

rude much ? I disagree completely but hey we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

  • Gsdfgsdfgsdfg

Actually if you look up on google “Sprint 2011 phones” There will be a list and there were three phones on the list and they became available to Sprint and next is the BB Torch so it will be available! Phone arena doest lie.

  • Illy_khader

    nice

  • QB

I agree because t-mobile has the best plans, best phones until the Torch came out, but that still not enough reason for me to switch to at&t. Maybe t-mobile will come out with their own line of phones that will put BB off the map and i will be a devoted customer waiting. Its all about the newest technology!

Can you please clarify your question? What is it that you are trying to do?

  • Ils

Not to state the obvious but it is a business phone first and foremost so it is carried on all carriers. I switched from Verizon to AT&T and have not been disappointed yet. When my friends calls have been dropped and I am on the otherside of the world litterally my phone and data function. AT&T also has the best customer service of all the carriers out there and that is a fact. Verizon already has its version of this phone but is only touch screen.

its not true….verizon as a company was made up by a band of theives!!! they all out there to steal from people….i use verizon and i would never make the same mistake of signing up with them!!!

This phone is a piece of garbage. The touchscreen is a defective piece of sh!+

A complete waste of money. There is no way to calibrate the screen and it consistently refuses to function properly.

Touch the right side of the screen and nothing happens. Touch the left and the right side punches the wrong key. Extremely frustrating.

Note: yes I’ve done every trick possible to get the screen to function properly. And it may work correctly for about a minute, and then it resumes to suck.

    I hate this phone.
