How To Install BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0

Earlier this week we released BlackBerry® Desktop Software v6.0 for PC! Several new features have been added with this release, such as BlackBerry® Media Sync and support for Microsoft® Outlook® 2010
With this new version now available for download, I’m here to walk you through the installation and initial configuration.

The first thing we’ll want to do when installing any software is to ensure that the computer we plan on using meets the minimum requirements of BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0. To identify these requirements, we will need to reference the BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 release notes. After reviewing the release notes and confirming your system meets the minimum requirements, proceed to download BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 for PC users by visiting http://www.blackberry.com/desktopsoftware.

Here’s an overview of the steps you will need to take:

1. Double click on the downloaded file to start the installation.

2. The installation wizard will now appear. Click Next to start the installation of BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0.

3. You will then see a prompt to specify the installation folder. Let’s use the default, which is C:\Program Files\Research in Motion\BlackBerry Desktop – then click Next.

4. The next screen that appears is a prompt asking us if we want to add an icon to the Windows® desktop for BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0. Let’s keep the default option again, which is to create this icon, and select Next to start the installation process. At this point, the installation will start as illustrated below.

5. Once the installation process has completed, a screen will appear asking us if we want to start BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 after we close the installation wizard. Let’s keep the default again, and click Finish to complete the installation and launch BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0. At this point, you may receive a prompt to restart your computer; if prompted, select Yes.

6. BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 is now installed and ready for use! If you had to restart during step 5, launch BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 by clicking the icon that was placed on your Windows desktop during installation.

At this point, all that’s left is do is connect your BlackBerry® smartphone to your PC. So grab your trusty USB cable and let’s get started!

Since this is a new installation of BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 – and thus the first time a BlackBerry smartphone is connected with this new installation – the “Add a New BlackBerry Device” wizard will appear automatically as illustrated in the screenshot below.

To use the wizard, simply click on Get started with this device to configure your BlackBerry smartphone and the following screen will appear. (If you just bought a new device and you want to copy all the data and settings from your old one, you’ll have the option to do so here. If you do not have access to a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, select Don’t add the account at this dialog.)

The last screen in the Add a New BlackBerry Device wizard will prompt you to configure the various settings offered by BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0. Specify your desired options and click Finish to complete the “Add a New BlackBerry Device” wizard.

Congratulations! We have successfully installed BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 and configured our BlackBerry smartphone for use with it!

You can review the BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0 User Guide to learn more about the included features and capabilities. This document will help you learn more about configuring organizer and media synchronization options.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback regarding your installation experience with BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0 by leaving a comment on this post! Also, be sure to follow @BlackBerryHelp on Twitter for all your pressing inquiries.

It left the 5.0 software on my computer after installing this update. Shouldn’t it update over top of the 5.0 version, so that you don’t have two versions on your computer at the same time? I wasn’t sure what to do, but I uninstalled the 5.0 version.

This is interesting, thanks for the clear guidelines! I actually use Syncables to sync the media from my BlackBerry to my computers, and it is loaded with other very useful features that go beyond simply syncing my BlackBerry’s media to my laptop. Set up was quite easy for me and it automatically syncs all of my important files, pictures, videos, and emails across each of my computers and my smartphone. I just thought I’d share my experience with it as I’ve found it to be the next level up from the native BlackBerry sync here.

Version 6.0 looks nice, but its installation process contains a major blooper. It does not uninstall previous versions, and conflicts with them.
RIM publishes various fixes to the problem involving manual Registry tweaking.
My advice would be, wait for RIM to come out with a real fix, and continue to use version 5 which continues to function fine, even with version 6 sitting on top of it.

  • Bivy

It seems like great software and it downloaded easily! I tried to configure settings with my address book, memo, and etc.. However, when it got to the drop down for the outlook profiles, there were none posted. I have Microsoft Office 07, and windows vista, and my email does go to my blackberry and my outlook does receive emails via a pop3 roadrunner account. So I have a profile, I receive emails on both my phone and outlook, however, it will not recognize the fact that i have an account. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it several times. I’m considering reverting back to the old version 4 software. However, i like the options given here to sync and back up so much more!

The release of v6.0 must be a major embarrasment to RIM. The install wizzard does not remove previous versions and conflicts with them.
Please note that the older version (5 in my case) miraculously continues to function with v 6.0 sitting on top of it.
So don’t bother with the very complex and risky advice given elsewhere on this site involving manual uninstall of v 6.0 and registry manipulations. Just use version 5 until RIM have worked out a proper fix.

This is completely misleading. Again RIM has failed to help its users utilise Office 2010 64 bit which makes it unacceptable.

    Hi Ty,
I am surprised that you are still offering the update to v6.0 on the BB site. Should you not withdraw it?
There clearly is a major flaw in the installation process: it fails to remove previous versions of the BB desktop software. This leads to unhelpful error messages (like 'unknown error' etc.) and failure to synchronise with Outlook. This is not a user error, nor is it an isolated case. The software crashes on every PC that had version 5 installed. RIM is wasting a lot of customer time!

  • Dlancaster

This version is terrible. I also could not sync my device after installation. I got the problem with intellsync pop up. Plus the media sync isn't near as good as the old Roxio version. You can't import single pictures to your phone only folders and you can't choose which folders on your phone to import them to! So I uninstalled it to go back to V5.0. This is where the real trouble begins. I reinstalled version 5.0 software and now I get “an unknown error has occured” when I try to sync!

  • RockR

This sofware has almost no interaction with the BES so it is useless to an enterprise where users want folder redirection control. The old version is far better and v6.0 should be recalled!!

  • Johnomalley

I am now to the point where I am beging you to listen. Do you not read the forums? Version 6.0 is not fit for purpose and I have stopped my IT department even thinking about BB. I now have a phone which is useless and cannot be synched. BB is doing nothing to help but instead asks us to mess about in registry etc. No, it is your responsibility to put out a product that works. Recall 6.0 NOW! I, like many others, will be handing in my BB next week and getting an iPhone. Your attitude to your loyal customers stinks.

DM6 seemed to install OK, but get an “Unknown Error” (Intellisync dialog box) whenever I try and configure teh sync settings.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled DM6 a number of times. I have cleaned the registry by deleting all keys with Blackberry or Rim in them (some of these are Intellisync entries), removed all folders etc, all to no avail.

One thing I did notice in the registry with all the software uninstalled was a number of Intellisync registry entries that I could not remove. They all had permissions such that I could not see the entries within them but not delete them. Could this be an issue ?

I tried running a fix (install wizard) just in case it changed anything after the initial install, but it did not.

    I am running Win 7 64bit, with a Blackberry 9700 running version 5.0.0.656

I am very grumpy. Just downloaded 6.0 as an “update”, and wow does it ever not work. No access to my pictures, music, nor ring tones.

Folks, an update should not require a Pearl that I have now had for two plus years to be “registered”. The software did not clue into past backups that have been encrypted. I really sweated bullets while it ran through my applications, then announced it was ready to go.

I am near the end of my three year contract, and given the recent press, now was not the time to write desktop software that Microsoft would call user friendly, why am I not encouraged to stick with you guys?

  • Tommy

I have had nothing but problems since downloading v6. Which is why I am on this site! The calender was not installed etc.. By luck I discovered it was to do with the calender name. I don't understand why my calender is associated with an email address. Once tha names were the same it worked. I now have a problem that it keeps flashing lists of overdue reminders and I can't get rid of it. Altogether it seems to be a time-wasting disaster. What are you going to do about it. It is very frustrating. It is hard enough sticking up for BBs against friends who have moved to iPhone. This sort of problem does not help!

I installed v6.0 of the Desktop Software and connected my Storm. Everything seemed to connect fine, however, I am having issues syncing my calendar and contacts with Outlook. I am trying a two sync and the sync feature doesn't find any future calendar events in Outlook even though there are a number. Like everyone else I am having issues with version 6. Version 5.x worked just fine on my trusty Window XP Pro PC and my Tour 9630. I installed V6.0.0.40 and it does not work. It seemed to install OK however it does not see my Tour 9630. Uninstalled all Blackberry software and downoaded a fresh copy of the Desktop software. Same result. Looks like I wll need to go back to 5.x until the people at Blackberry get this sorted out. Maybe wait for V6.1. Not counting on much help from support on this.

Sorry, but it does not work. I have MS Outlook 2010 (32 bit config) and I have installed for the second time BB Desktop Software 6.0. When I try to synch my contacts (for example) MS Outlook is not listed, only MS Outlook Express, ASCII and Yahoo. Why?. Once again, a great device is ruined because the desktop software to synchronize it with my PC is a total desaster, and waste of time.

  • Rseraphin

What a disaster. BB pushed the 6.0 software “upgrade” out to my BB last week and it wiped out settings and synch capabilities between MS Outlook and my Verizon Wireless BB. It took two nasty emails over the weekend, and over 2 hours on the phone, to uninstall the 6.0 version and go back to the 5.0.1. If this waste of time ever happens again, I'll be looking at other options.

Blackberry fix your software quick or I will be forced to permanently demote blackberry to a complete and total inferior product. How can you release something so flawed. Desktop V6 removes nearly all features Roxio media manager allowed for, all features removed. What is even more amazing is that v5 still works but Roxio has been magically removed from it. Even more stupid, you cannot uninstall v6 and have back a functional v5. Fix it quick or my business is gone forever, best of luck to you, as I have a strong feeling, design that incompetent will be match with equally bad customer service. I always liked Blackberry until you released a totally, completely unfinished software version that does not allow backwards compatability.

    Hi

A while ago I installed version 6 having got the calendar problems with version 5 and Outlook 10, but failed miserably with an error message before the programme even opened and a microsoft message saying it would look for a remedy.

Tried doing a repair but told the file it needed was not available on the network.

I have followed the forum over the last few weeks and tried everything mentioned with no joy.

Does anyone else have any ideas of should I go and buy at HTC's or I phones for my staff?

  • Bruce

For the first time since getting my blackberry I have to say I am very unhappy. Upgraded to version 6, could not sync with Outlook 2007, followed instructions to do a clean wipe, re-installed and still I can't sync with outlook. Lost a whole lot of data and applications.

I don't understand how an application that clearly does not work properly can be released and upset so many people. The fact that so many people have the same problems shows poor quality control. I expected more.

You really know how to upset your customers, well done!

I just upgraded to new computer with Windows 7 (32 bit) and Outlook 2010 and when I try to set up sync, all the options are there but the check box disappears when I hit finish and then Desktop Manager tells me I haven’t set up sync. Are you using Outlook 2010 32 bit or 64 bit?

Try downloading and installing the device software on your computer from your service provider’s download site here: http://bbry.lv/cp57Eb then retrying the software update.

I installed v.6 but now I cannot disable wireless sync of messages while it is connected. I don’t care about media sync. I have my ipod for that, but I don’t want to have to deal with all these messages that show up on my desktop while I am at work. Help?

  • Lawyer_peetie

    yes, we are.

Just add myself to the list: Love my blackberry. But for the last 6 weeks I was not able to synch because of the Update to Dektop 6.0. I was always hoping, that they release a fix… but come on, time passes, and nothing happens! Is it so difficult to create a version that runs… They have so many clever guys working for them… It must be possible to fix this!!! PLEASE! PLEASE! I really want a solution.

  • Rachelcgarner

Hi, I got the torch a few weeks ago, and it’s my 3rd bb -love them (even with the few probs). I have two annoying problems. After the last upgrade (v6.0 bundle 695):
    1. at random times, my curser will start moving, and keep moving one space at a time to the left/back, so that you can not type or make calls, it just keeps moving back through type and programs. After 4 battery pulls and reboots, I left it over night and it is now working. Has been ok for the last 3 days.
    2. after using google sync, it asked if I wanted to share my calender with bbm, I said no -but it got “stuck” and shared my calendar with everyone (kinda embarrassing) and now at least 2x a day, it pops up and asks if I want to share my calendar. I said no, and it unshared -but how do I get it to stop asking? (my husband updated his torch last night, and the same thing happened -it shared his calendar with everyone also)
ok, I’ve thought of one more while typing:
    3. every time I reboot, I have to go in and turn all my connections off, and then back on to get anything -even though they say on, I have no service.
Thanks for all the thoughts/suggestions everyone!

  • Rhewson

Call me when 6.1 is available. I have already spent way too much time trying to get 6.0 to work. for a bunch of geniuses who think they are #1, they sure screwed this release up. i have never seen an update as messed up as this one. Why should I have to manually remove items from my regsistry to get this to work???
    Amazing!

  • BlackBerryHelp_Heather

You can try doing a clean software reload as shown in http://bbry.lv/cG8oer and test before restoring any data.

As for issues with the 3rd party application, you can contact the vendor for assistance.

    Cheers!

why is this workaroudn still be promulgated on the unsuspecting? IT DOES NOT WORK!

  • Lawyer_peetie

Was taht the only response I get to my inquiry? Yes, we are on a Blackberry Enterprise server with my Blackberry through my work. Was there a follow up set of instructions or help that might come from that? Or was the question supposed to impart some knowledge?

  • http://www.twitter.com/BlackBerryHelp BlackBerryHelp_Brian

    Hey Lawyer_peetie,

Using this version of the desktop manger there is no way to disable wireless sync when connected.

  • Lawyer_peetie

Why not? And if that is the case, why was I asked if I am on a Blackberry Enterprise Server?

  • BlackBerryHelp_Corey

    Hi,

This feature was part of BlackBerry Desktop Redirector which is not included in BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0. If you downgrade to 5.0.1 the feature will be available since Desktop Redirector is still available.

  • Lawyer_peetie

I am sure you understand that saying it was not included is not answering my question of why it was not included. You have gone out of your way to make the software less useful, and now I hear that you don’t plan on offering OS6 on the storm. Too bad you guys have absolutely no idea what you are doing or how to keep your long standing clients happy

I had v6.0 on my old XP SP2 laptop – worked fine. Tried to install on my new Dell Windows 7 64 bit laptop and it crashed during install. Couldn’t install C++ 2008 as part of the install. Used Revo uninstaller forced uninstall to remove then finally installed but still without Visual C++. Desktop software now launches successfully but cannot connect with my Curve 8330. Anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

The BlackBerry Desktop Redirector was not included in the release of BlackBerry Desktop Software 6.0. The only option to continue using BlackBerry Desktop Redirector is to use Desktop Software 5.0.1. As for BlackBerry 6 the availability will be determined at a later date. I’m having a really hard time getting my Bold 9650 to work with my Win 7 machine and Outlook 2010. I’ve just downloaded BB 6.0 on my desktop, and the first hurdle is that it takes 4-5 minutes (sometimes longer) for my Bold to get “connected” to the desktop setup. Then it starts to load the new version 6.0 software on the phone. And then an error message comes up indicating that the install failed…. I’ve had the BB since July, and I haven’t once been able to sync it to my address book or email, which is the primary reason why I bought it. Is there any alternative to a surrender to the iPhone, or a Droid?

I just uninstalled your software because everytime I turn my Blackberry on while my computer is in hybernate the system freezes. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled twice now and until I read something positive about a fix I won’t install the pc software. I’m still within the time I can return this device and I’m seriously thinking of doing just that.

It is Oct 27, 2010 i have been without the syn feature for over 4 months, time is critical here, and it looks like i will have to change to the apple network, as RIM and Microsoft dont seem to want customers somebody better figure it out, i have 5 employees on RIM products and there is no excuse for the lack of effort to eliminate the problems with SYN systems.

  • Anonymous

    Hello B B,

    Thank you!

Dont know If you already Solve it, but it may help any new visitor .
I had the same problem, I found the solution in other forum: Go to service book and delete any mail preceeded with the text (CICAL)
After that I could sync My calendar!!!

  • PeterHutch

How long before there is a simple fix for the synch issues with destop software v5.0.1 and v6.0? I can’t get my Torch to recognise Outlook 2010 to synch with calendar, contacts, tasks etc? The initial process seems to progress correctly as each part is configured and the final screen says ‘Congratulations you have successfully installed Calendar………….etc’ but the check mark disappears on the setup page. Try to synch and the message appears ‘ You have not configured an organiser to synchronise………’. The present fix involving a ‘Clean uninstall is to complex and risky for the uninitiated!

  • Jas

Upgrade to Version 6 has been a disaster. Software keeps hanging, fails to connect with phone most of the time, refuses to backup or sync now. Everything worked fine with previous revision. GET IT SORTED!

  • Skwomack1

Like every other install I get the DevicePatchLoaderUSB.msi cannot be found error. I’ve messed with the registry and read every forum I could find to fix this issue, and still it’s there with version 6.0. I’m reading that other users, excuse me not just individual users but entire enterprises, are going to iphone, and I cannot imagine you would answer me, as an individual, so I guess I have a choice to make as well. Anyway, I’ll try one more time. I get the error right after opening Desktop software. I havent even gotten the chance to plug my phone in, let alone synch my calendar, etc.

Have you tried decompressing the 600_b047_multilanguage file with WinZip or WinRar? I was having the same problems until I decided to try decompressing the files into a folder first. Then I was able to run it and install it seamlessly.

  • Mike

Listen people you have a page saying to reinstall click update then choose earlier versions this is NOT! in the version 6 at all no where to be found I cannot reinstall the blackberry 8300 with desktop 6.1 at all.

  • David

I have upgraded from the Blackberry 8250 to the Bold 9700. It updated on the old and the new phone with the old version of the synchronization but since it installed the new version 6 when i try to configure settings for synchronization it comes back “Intellisyunc Unknown Error reported”. I have tried rest settings and it confirms the reset but when I try and configure I always get the error.

If I try device Sync all it says no items to sync and there are no ticks next to calendar etc.

    Hi Rianne,

When you try to install BlackBerry Desktop Software, what errors do you receive?

  • Punctilious1

After dealing with RIM about defective Bold 9000′s combined with their total lack of support and resolution (outside of repeatedly sending me used and broken replacement phones), I dumped them. I’ve been using BB’s for my business for 5 years but the degradation in both quality and support made it impossible for me to use their products. I had to break a toothpick off in the camera inside the back of the last Bold 9000 in order for the sound to work. There’s a product worth $500. Nokia and LG are the polar opposites of RIM in a most critically important way. Their products actually work without having to spend 2 hours/day to try and keep them running. I like the iPhone, but that has issues, so I’ve decided to wait for them to iron out the glitches. Nokia is used by almost every company I do contract work for. That says it all. Thanks for your comments.

I just downloaded the os 6 for my blackberry 9300 and after the installation was finishing or finished it said warning 16 out of 17 modules were installed. Then I unplugged it because it looked like it was finished and went back to desktop manager after all 11 downloads were complete. Then after it showed me a beautiful movie on the OS 6 platform after that it was an ugly white screen with all my icons and appications on it and I can only select a few of them I can’t even find my media folder anymore and when I hit the camera button it goes to the web browser.

  • Simon Atkins

I have found a solution to the synchronisation problem. In principle follow these steps
    1. Backup all data and applications using the Desktop Manager
    2. Delete all data and applications from the smartphone using the ‘Wipe Handheld’ option
    3. Restore the backed up data and applications.

    Now for the specifics

Go to this link for the explanation:
    http://bbry.lv/aXA5vH

Go to this link to find how to wipe your handheld depending on which it is:

I wish you the best of luck

I have just, for the second time in as many years, had to recover my computer after it crashed whilst attempting to install blackberry software on Windows Vista. First, it was 4.7, and now 6.0. What is with this? I am not attempting to install it over another version of BB desktop; it’s not on my computer. This is the ONLY software that has done this to my computer- TWICE. I love my blackberry, I really do, but there is something seriously wrong with this program, and obviously I’m not the only one with issues.

What about a Windows 7 update to the KB article? What about BB write a clean uninstall script that does all that for us? I’ve gone into registry, but only rarely, and have a strong opinion that you shouldn’t make us do so.

Ditto for me. Got the new Torch in December. Upgraded to Desktop v6. Worked like a charm for 3 weeks until today, stopped synching and even recognizing my Outlook Calendar. I called Blackberry Technical Support, who instructed me to remove Desktop v6 and reinstall it. Didn’t work. They proceeded to tell me that it’s not a probem with the device nor the BB Desktop software and there was nothing they could to to help me. They said it “must be something with your system or your Outlook”. Nothing has changed on either as far as settings, but they almost had me believing them, until I spoke to collegue who told me he’d had the same issues, and pointed me to this Blog for information. This is unacceptable. As the guy below me says, my Torch is now officially useless to me.

  • Ericpete

I am also0 disgusted with BBY. I have spent 3 8-hour sessions with BB tech support level 2, and have just now installed v 6.0.1.18, only to have the software not recognize my bby when tethered to my desktop. THATS IT!!! Droid here I come. I am furious with their lack of assistance, and having to0 educate Verizon tech support that I know what I am talking about when I tell them it does not work. No wonder the stock is depreciating. RIM is dying, and I say good riddance.

Whoever wrote this trash never actually tried to install the software, this much is onvious.

Does the Install Wizard actually install anything?
I have attempted to install this application about a half-a-dozen times and even Windows Search cannot find where it has been installed.

  • glebealyth

    Nope.
    Just tried it again.

The only parts of the above description that are true are:

    1. Double click on the downloaded file to start the installation.

    2. The installation wizard will now appear.

Everything else is a fantasy in the author’s head.

    The software is a fake.

I have just bought a new Blackberry 8520 and hope it works better than this imaginary product.

  • MR Z32

I have been a blackberry user for about 6 years but now I’m both fed up and just plain tired of the issues i have. First, i can’t delete the music and video demo. Each time I think it’s deleted, guess what, it’s right back on there. just imagine working out to some of your favorite tunes then this Aeson- Music Demo- World Traveller..starts to play. I can’t stand it. Then trying to watch some video clips from a NBA game and there is, yes you guessed it, another unwanted demo.. this time The Maine, Into Your Arms… Why can’t I delete these. What get me worked up even more is this. I did an update and now I have like 10-15 unwanted downloads that I did not want but can’t delete. The only option I have is to hide them. this has killed my MB of phone storage. I use to say I will always use blackberry but with each and every passing day of frustration that phrase exits my mouth no more. I am now looking for something else. I won’t even start with the blackberry desktop frustration.

    Hi birdofillomen,

What happens when you do try to install the software? Does it complete, or does it fail going through the install process? If so where does it fail?

  • Anonymous

    Hi Izehieddie,

If you go to your Add/Remove Programs in Windows, so you see BlackBerry Desktop Software listed as installed? If so uninstall it and then reinstall the BlackBerry Desktop Software. If you don’t see if listed just run through the install again.
