Hold on. This iPad look-alike is business-generating, but the iPad isn’t? C’mon. RIM, you’re going to have to do better than “me too” efforts. That’s the MS game, and it isn’t working for them.

i have a feeling that blackberry will– once again– be a victim of their own hype with this. think Torch. again, there’s nothing truly “revolutionary” or “amplified” as claimed by this new device.

hardcore blackberry users will obviously love this device, but from the neutral, i honestly can’t be bothered.

Oh and its SMALLER than the Ipad too….very well done. THAT was ONE of the things preventing me from purchasing and Ipad…that and its from Apple! I’m a RIMMER for life! How much and WHEN??

  • Mike

    Subpar, copycat attempt.FAIL!

  • Oliver G

How is it not working for them? They’re a far superior company to Apple in every respect. Trendwhored mindless consumerism doesn’t equate to innovative products.

  • http://benjaminbach.com Benjamin Bach

    Very cool

  • Cierra

The iPad wasn’t the first tablet either. Tablets have been around for years.

  • Dc1973

hahaha thats funny…. “innovate don’t recreate” please… do you think that RIM just pulled this out of thin air….. RIM along with a dozen or more manufacturers have been working on tablets for years… yes Apple were first to market with the Ipad but maybe thats why its under spec`ed over priced and so limited…..

  • http://twitter.com/OldDirtyGamer Rob Miles

I’m pretty excited about this from a developer’s standpoint. I won’t hate on Apple because they rushed their product out to market (and no, they weren’t in the tablet market first — they stole the idea from Asia) but I can say that the openness of this new tablet makes for more creative development platform. I, for one, cannot wait until CES…

There was a “BlackPad” article on Wikipedia on the strength of the rumor. Rather than delete it last week I decided to add a reference to the WSJ article, and I’ve now moved it to “BlackBerry BlackPad” and it’s starting to grow a bit.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlackBerry_PlayBook

  • Patrick K Tana

When is BB releasing a White version? Lol. Might as well bring out an mp3 player while they are at it! Call it the bPod!

On a serious note, competition is great and this could be good.

  • Kej316

You Apple freaks are ridiculous. Flash, multitasking and a camera alone blow the iPad out of the water. Never mind the awesome specs and the fact that you can use it on an existing BB data plan!!! Unbelievable!

  • Momo

if the Playbook is to the iPad what the blackberry phones are to the iPhone, this will be a good tablet, with productivity and some social feature support.

People with business in mind love the Blackberrys, the apps and the full integration (almost) with Outlook/Exchange server. Apple really is not up to par with the full support of MS Office apps (read Outlook and Exchange).

Even the so called bad press of RIM with issues with countries like the UAE, India etc.. has a positive spin.. they are indeed a secure platform for business data.

Being an owner of a blackberry AND an iPad, I have to say that I will buy one of the playbook, if just to try it and see how it compares with the iPad. I love most of the aspect of the iPad except for the poor integration with professional business apps and the lack of stuff like a camera.. it is a device that REQUIRES a camera if it wants to replace our laptops on trips.

I hope RIM will deliver what it promises with this.

  • N152N

I cant wait to get this!!!! Im a huge mac fan… I use a BlackBerry for biz though. The ipad should have come out with these features from the start… But as usual, they come out with the basic, then once everyone buys it…. The upgrade it with features and then sell more…. However, i dont think they were expecting BB to come out with such a SEXY looking machine!!! Im buying it!!! I just hope the finish is as nice as the ipad. I dont like plastic, or chrome plated plastic.

  • Oliver G

I fail to see how this is the case. The development platform will undoubtedly be infinitely superior to Apple, and combined with it’s more usable size and excellent technical specification, i’d argue that it trounces the iPad in every respect.

I’m a neutral user to and i can’t see the iPad competing with the Playbook, let alone some of the Android based tablets that are due for release in the near future.

i’ve been using the so called TABLET PC from 2005 … i was wondering where all the apple fan boy were at that time … were they too small to even play with computer at 2005?

with a table of 2GB of RAM, spacious hard disk, USB ports, etc., who in their sane mind would want to limit themselves in using some 16GB or 32GB solid state capacity tablet device called iPad … that is even uncapable of playing flash-enabled sites …

Attention! This is not a video of the BlackBerry PlayBook, it’s a commercial with a lot of glossy CG. I will believe it when I see it. Tech companies do this all the time. They cg the product demo in completely dishonest ways. Is the ui really that smooth and responsive? You will never know from this commercial. My money says it’s no where close.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Justice-Conder/100000597838181 Justice Conder

They weren’t just poorly marketed. They were crap products.

  • Mregan1973

This type of thinking is always confusing to me. According to you; whoever made a cell phone after the 1st company that created it, shouldn’t have, Pepsi shouldn’t be here, there should only be one Tv company, 1 computer company, 1 t-shirt company..you catch my drift? It’s about choice, there are differences between the tablets & people will choose. So I hope everything you own is by that original creator because otherwise…OMG you may have something that was RECRATED!!

  • http://twitter.com/holodex Dave Holodex

Under-specced perhaps, but certainly not over priced. They completely bamboozled the industry on release day when everyone was predicting $999 retail, but they came in at half that price.

  • Awe

That’s is easy! The iPad is so expansive!

  • Guerllamo7

Besides the Flash, dual, cameras and security I think they got the size right. I noticed the CEO popped it in his coat pocket as he walked away. Nice! Blackberry loyalists really have something to celebrate.

Fail. All other upcoming 7″ devices are narrow enough to easily fit in a pair of dockers. Not this one. If you have to carry it in your hand you might as well go with 9″ or larger.

  • Mikestantx

I’m saving up too. No fee needed to use the installed wifi in the Playbook. If you have a blackberry phone and there is no wifi you can tether, bluetooth or wired, and use the broadband on that plan. AWESOME!!!

  • John F

A name like “Playbook” (sounds like a games machine) will not attract serious business users, $1,500 and no 3G will not interest many consumers. This looks like a non-starter so far, and not a word about battery life that I have heard. It will need a good set of batteries to make all that multi-tasking and high resolution truly useful.

  • http://twitter.com/CjEggett C J Eggett

I think to compare this to the iPad is to miss the point.

Would be interested to know the battery life of the “PlayBook.”

  • John F

I’m sure Apple could do all those things for $1,500, they just know they would not sell many of them. Without 3G they would sell even fewer.

Why not compare “apples to apples” or in this case “apples to blackberrys” before falling back on the old Apple fanboy dismissive attitude. If you actually look at the specs on both machines, the Playbook comes out way ahead of the iPad in every respect.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Well I could build a rocket for 1 billion dollars too, it’s not the point RIM did it , Apple couldn’t!

I’m retired on disability pension. I use a BlackBerry because the images DO NOT shift around on the screen. The whatPhone shifting (and television and many things) trigger vertigo.

I LOVE MY BLACKBERRY. It’s my connection to the world when I’ve fallen and can’t get up.

But, no PlayBook for me. Can’t deal with shifting images. And I’m sorry, very, very sorry.

  • CDN IT Pro

How about an explanation, or is this just another dismissive fanboy response to anything not Apple?

  • http://twitter.com/abraham_torres Abraham Torres

Agreed! This is a very slick device. It specifications, what we know so far, put the iPad to shame. A Dual-Core Cortex A9 and 1GB of ram blow the the competition out of the water. The dual HD cameras are a nice touch. Cant wait for a hands on eval. Played with an ipad yesterday and it was HEAVY! This should be much lighter.

  • http://twitter.com/enterprise_C Jean-Luc Picard

You can still use songs from iTunes on your blackberry, and there is a BlackBerry App World… So that leaves you with the iPad’s strength being an app store with more bad quality apps…

  • http://twitter.com/abraham_torres Abraham Torres

The Playbook should be able to do everything the iPad can and more. Developers have been given all the tools they need right up front to create killer applications. The OpenGL specification allows developers to make games, the guy from QNX said that this could be a gaming platform. As for media, I foresee 7Digital as the provider of music. Not sure about movies and video though. Perhaps Amazon or another provider. With the Flash support built in, media streaming, such as Netflix and Hulu, is a distinct possibility. What do you think?

  • http://twitter.com/enterprise_C Jean-Luc Picard

So blackberry shouldn’t do something even if they can do it better than the competitors (we’ve yet to see whether that will be the case, but based on the specs then it’s already creamed iPad)?
If you think that screen resolution is an important aspect for a phone, go get an iPhone… I’ll stick with a phone that has decent battery life.

  • http://twitter.com/enterprise_C Jean-Luc Picard

except for the camera… And the other camera, and multitasking, and the RAM, and the ability to properly view flash-enabled websites, and the fact that it’s blackberry, and the (hopefully good) QNX OS, and the ability to use it with your existing blackberry plan, and the USB port so you can plug in anything from a mouse and keyboard to an external hard drive, and the HDMI port so you can show the screen on your TV, and the portability, and the access to the enterprise server… Need I go on?

so yea it says it does all these wonderful things that the ipad doesn’t, but like the blackberry itself it will be slow , or be amazingly fast for about a week then u try to add apps and it will no doubt crash and burn. BLACKBERRY- manipulate and trick the product into doing what you want. Apple- does what you want. Maybe I’m skeptical because I’ve used both the iphone and blackberry, and iphone trumps it every time, please let this be a product that can actually compete in this new tablet market, I think I’m just getting sick of cheap, frustrating not up to standard technology.

even the way it’s displayed on your homepage is stolen from apple.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

You people make me laugh. That’s like saying because someone invented the wheel no one else can make it better. Oh no its square and a screen and flat. What do you want them to make it a ball?

  • cfb

….please this is in a league of its own, the iPad is cool if you are a 14 year old school girl. A lot of thought went into this work device. Good work.

  • Aaronashford

    how much r these

  • Stan

When will the Playbook be available in Canada?

  • Hogg

You guys need to get this into the education market….it is being dominated by the Apple i-holes simply because they are handing them out to teachers and administrators everywhere. Get some into the hands of the web developers at every college you can, asap

  • BlackBerryHelp_Heather

    Hello Stan,

    Cheers!

love it got to have it rite….tht thing is a keeper

  • Tony T.

You are absolutely correct, however, it is already killing the iPad in that Apple has a model and is already disecting it to apply to its second generation iPad! Be careful Apple, you will have another lawsuit like you did when you stole from LG to make the iPhone!!!!!

  • Aji

Maybe not. But I think most people are getting the iPad instead for ease of use. All boils down to what you need I guess: Enterprise-ready or user-friendly?

  • JROD

Just a thought. Listen, Apple is not stupid, they knew their iPad would strike up competitve products. I applaud RIM for their innovation and I’m sure that the Playbook will be an extremely business-friendly tool, like the best of Blackberry.

But everyone, lets not forget we’re talking about a consumer giant here in “Apple”. They knew what they were doing when they released the initial version of the iPad. They knew the need for a camera, they knew the need for a USB port, they knew the need for multi-tasking, they also knew the need to hold off on a better product until more “relevant” competition emerged to market. We as consumers need to be intelligent enough to understand that the specs on the Playbook are NOT so incredible that Apple’s iPad creators are scratching their head wondering how. They have the next version ready to fly. They introduced their new updated OS for a reason, and its likely to support the new iPad when its time.

There’s one common strategy that all consumer giants use. Never release a full version of a product. Once a competitor releases their version, you release the next “one-up” version and make their product obsolete. Don’t be fooled that iPad isn’t on top of this development and will shortly follow up with similar specs that will likely have an additional feature or two that will be hot topics at the time. Then, after, Blackberry will come out with their next version. Don’t fall into a trap and buy what you need. If you dive for the BB Playbook, you may be disappointed when Apple comes out with their next version and vice versa, if you need an enterprise solution for business needs, you may become disappointed in the next iPad’s compatibility. Take your time, but don’t underestimate either of these companies’ intelligence. They have the next version already in place and will wait for the right time to launch.

Just enjoy the technology while it continues to improve and always choose based on life/business effeciency, not trends.

  • Michelle

I can buy a playbook now?

  • Cobils

You realize when things come out so close together (within 6 months), they were in development at the SAME time. It’s not like RIM started this product in April when Apple released the iPad.

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Nope sorry the Apple guy is right. RIM cannot innovate. Everyone sell their stocks, drop the devices. “Sorry every one this guy says RIM cannot innovate so lets shut it down!!!”

Give me a break!!!! I guess your tire manufacturer is just copying caveman design of the same old wheel they never innovated and modified an existing design (flat touch screen which BTW Apple didn’t do first so I guess Apple sucks at innovation as well)

  • Descurge

Well, as long as Apple continues to reject flash, and not add simple things like USB ports, then for the meantime there is no reason to innovate!

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Don’t hate the player hate the game…. Come up with what ever excuses you want, what ever makes you feel good sleeping at night in your Apple jammies RIM is obviously doing something right or you wouldn’t be over here complaining about it. If RIM is so horrible at what they do explain to me why they are where they are? This ain’t silly bands man its real life and people make purchases based on need, some of you want a gaming device that’s why there is the iPhone, some of you want a business device and there is RIM. Get your head out of the ground and realize its not a trend its a real world need that is being meet by a company that see what people want and make it. Apple just tells you what you want and you just say Oh I guess its what Apple does so oh well. Welcome to the 21st century man where a company make more then 2 devices 4 versions os a phone and 1 tablet pffft come one RIM has designed and changed 50+ devices cause they keep changing to find a perfect fit and what works. Sure failure comes with the but also so does learning and innovation. Apple just relies on Apple hype to sell their stuff. That is soon fading so they had better start listening to what people want or they will start too fail

  • http://caspan.com Caspan

Also explain to me how this is not innovative? Since you seem to think Apple is and RIM is not explain it! Grant us your wisdom for a bit….

Apple WILL do all these things with the Ipad…they just like us to pay for a new product every year…..take the Ipod touch…recreated every year so you have to have the new version….I for one, am sick of it.

When the kindle came out, Steve jobbs made fun of it and said that why would u need one Device just for reading , and then he created something similar because ppl were still buying the kindle. Apple will release one device and rape the market by adding one or two new features and re releAsing the device over and over. Btw BB is still the number one selling smart phone world wide

I got ICRAP free, it would be nice if RIM would offer “bring your ICRAP and get discount on playbook”

  • Clint

Well Apple stole the idea from other companys along time ago tablets are not exactly ground breaking.
Other company have had them for 10 years lol!

Looks awesome! bbm, pairing with current blackberry, using current blackberry’s data plan, does it get better? only one thing i’m not too sure about…. is it fun? android and apple devices both have history of tons of free, FUN, third part apps and games; having a blackberry, i know that this isn’t really the case. i hope they get an updated app world!

Damn itunes. Who are these mindless sheep who use this crap? Do things exactly as I say and all will be well. Ohh…and let me check your playlist to make sure all your mp3s were bought legally. Apple is for tech-stupid people who want to look cool by showing off their latest app…meaning they can click on it, but really have no idea how it works. Blackberry….and even Microsoft…cater to a more “hands-on” and dare I say more intellegent person. Please don’t be offended Apple users…..there’s an APP for that! Stupid sheep.

When will RIM launch it in India?

  • HALE

  • Wang_yur

actually they do.. sad to say but ipad made the tablet to the general market…. good marketing

  • Robhello

You make a good point. There was no need making reference to “retarded cousin”

Let’s move away from discriminatory language in general

  • BBJD

I just put off getting a tab for christmas because I am waiting for this to come out!, So whenever blackberry releases this unit it will be my christmas gift! SO HURRY UP RIM!!!

  • Blackberry_is_lame

Man, BB nuthuggers are worse than Apple fanboys. First of all, none of you here have NO IDEA what the cost of this tablet is, yet everyone seems confident it’ll be cheaper than an iPad or Galaxy Tablet. Second, just because this was ANNOUNCED in September with having “better” specs than the iPad doesn’t mean it’s better than the iPad. For one, Apple will likely have their second revision out around the same time as the Playbook. Are you really that stupid to think they aren’t going to increase the specs on the next iPad? And secondly, whoopty doo that it has a 1GB of RAM and a dual-processor CPU. That’s just more circuitry to suck the battery dry. I use an iPad daily at my job, not only is the battery life incredible, but on an old 1GHz ARM A8 with 256MB of RAM it’s far from sluggish. Just tells me that iOS is much more efficient than BB Tablet OS and Android.
When the Playbook is RELEASED, then start thumping your chest at how much better it is than the iPad or something else. But I hate to tell you, it won’t be that far ahead of the iPad2… if ahead at all.

Alright BB nuthuggers, enjoy your shrinking marketshare.

  • http://twitter.com/gilv Gil Velasquez

I love watching the Apple and other folks degrade BlackBerry just because BlackBerry chooses not to restrict people the way Apple does. Apple, for its claims of being so tree-hugging, love all, serve all, is nothing more than a glitzier and more Naziesque version of Windows. The difference is with Apple that their fanbois and fangurlz willingly love to be screwed over into sourcing from specific places that Apple designates as opposed to putting what they want on their devices. So, chew on that.

  • Jm10000

in what sense? coz it sold millions, altough it was unclear to what the iPad done/does, the marketing took it away from being a big iTouch

  • Leviwarfel

I knew this was going to happen. RIM has been pretty idle for awhile now, not really releasing any “wow” items. The Torch was a good addition, but nothing too big. The Storm was huge, and I knew it would be awhile until they released anymore ground-breaking handsets. I know this is going to blow the rest out of the water, can’t wait to get my hands on one!

  • Karen G

Such ____________ coming out about something that hasn’t even hit the market yet. I’m not a computer person but have been waiting for something to hit the market that will work with my Blackberry and yes I’m a Blackberry user for the past 8 years… and with the new Torch and its keyboard I am a very happy camper…and looking forward to the New Blackberry Playbook is exciting… This will be exciting with the access to the web that I would not have had with a iPad and the software that is available with the Blackberry Playbook,,, exciting times :)

  • Perro

I’m not a bb fan or a apple fan, in fact, I hate both. But this look for now, more suited to my needs, lets if apple releases an iPad2…

  • Dsluckay

    Whoa! Sweet!
I am planning to get one! :)

  • Cellular Specialist

Wow I’m glad you said it yourself. ” Apple will likely have their second revision out around the sametime as the Playbook. Are you really stupid ….”

We aren’t that stupid, the people who went and bought an Ipad to just be screwed when apple brings out Ipad2 which will have all the features everyone wanted in the first place are stupid. Now to get the features they need to buy another unit and won’t be able to sell the other because the new one it out.

I feel proud that BB actually took the time to think about the things people want and put it in the first one. That means I don’t need to buy one every year when they bring a new one out. I can buy one every 2 or 3 years when the technology changes enough that it would be worth it.

How about Apple stops using old technology to get people intertested and bring out something completely new and put NEW technology in their devices.

I’m hope your glad that a company like Apple is screwing all the people out there who have kids that have to have the newest thing because its WAY better because they put old new technology in it, and then they buy it for their kids, and then they can’t put food on the table. Think about that for a second, then you realise why RIM is better!

    Thank you,

the only reason the Ipad 2 will be any better, is because they have seen the awesomeness of the playbook and realize that if they even want to compete, they better smarten up and make some changes. Go BB!

  • Hunter

This looks exceptional and at $399 it is doable. Is it an e-reader too? Can I download the software that allows access to purchased, copyrighted e-textbooks? (Apparently Android OS based products can’t do this) Can I highlight, underline, take notes. etc? Does it have text-to-voice?

What do you think? I’m a college student looking to replace 30 pounds of text books with a 12 oz., fun to use tablet.

After RIM has done some of his former team, I do not think I trust them to buy another appliance from them. Just months after liberation, fell Storm 2 as old news. People do not buy this device. RIM can only replace it with another device and place this time ..
