Facebook Places Now Available For BlackBerry!

Well I guess that is nice that people can check to see how close they are, however, I could do that just by making arrangements and calling. It would have been better for me if I could share my videos on FB from my blackberry curve, Which I yet have no answers to why, I could not.

When will v1.9 be available to the rest of the world is it only in North America? Or is that only Places?

In BlackBerry 6, if the FB user is connected to their entry in the BB Address book, a places check in will show up in the recent activity screen within the address book.

I am so excited!! Just waiting on my app to update.

I have tried registering on the beta zone website but it keeps saying my password isnt right even though I am doing it correctly with the consisting of at least 3 of the following character types: numeric, special, uppercase and lowercase.

What if you’re not using the Beta version and there are still problems with Places? BB is saying this is the “final” version, not Beta.

Is “Places” only available on touch screen Blackberrys?? Is that why it says “your location is temporarily not available”? Or should it be working on all BBs? Mine is an 8530 Curve, not a touch screen.

the places section will only show me my fiends places, it has no check in button! i am using the 1.9 version and have only downloaded it! please help!

Hey all, apologies for any confusion caused by our post. While Facebook for BlackBerry 1.9 is available worldwide, Facebook Places may not be supported in your country. Right now Canada, the United States and the UK are supported, and I’m sure Facebook will be adding more countries soon.

facebook places is working in Indonesia…but my blackberry still said that “my location is temporarily not available” and I cant check the share my location either…

Places only work on mydevice, when I start maps and turn GPS on.
I use a BB Storm.

After the update, I saw all my Facebook-Message in the News-Folder.
When I delete the Message in the Folder on the Cellphone, the Message on the Facebook-Server will Be deleted too.
Why happens this?
How can I turn off the delete- function or the post function in my cellphone News-Folder?

I just downloaded the new facebook from Blackberry App World and I see no changes to facebook when I open it, when I go to options-Applicaion-Add on and look for facebook…it shows the new version (1.9), but when I open it I don’t see facebook places, messages list and search. Why am I not seeing this?

Mine didn’t work initially either. Long story short, make sure BBMaps is installed and GPS is working on it.

I had removed BBMaps (I usually use Google Maps), so I re-installed BBMaps. GPS wasn’t working so I discovered that it was set to E911 only instead of Location On. I had to mess with the service books and re-register the device and GPS finally started working in BBMaps, and subsequently Places started working too.

, made sure GPS was set to Location On, and I ended up having to delete the service book for BBMaps and re-register the device. It’s working now.

Try uninstalling the facebook application and reinstalling, go to options > advanced options > applications, delete Facebook then reinstall from App world, I hope this helps.

I have a blackberry Curve 8520 With Tmobile, and I just installed the new version of facebook however when I try to update locations all it shows me is friends, it doesnt give me an option to update my own and when I go to options and go down on my device, it is grayed out and not able to be selected? Why can we still not tag people in status updates in the app? I find it weird that we can tag people in the Places section but not in statuses… Support for different friends lists would be nice too.

Hi, I have a 8520 white curve for T-mobile (USA). I did the download, went to places and there is no check in button. I went to options on the Facebook app and the box is greyed out and won’t let me click it to share my places. I went to the Facebook site, and my options are set up there to be displayed, but not on the App. I tried the options, advanced options, GPS thing and its already set to “location on”.

The Messages for Facebook is now integrated with the Facebook Application. If you delete a message from your BlackBerry or from Facebook, they now reconcile and will no longer appear.

i have the curve 8520 and it doesn’t work either. however you can download “foursquare” from app world, then link it to your facebook to check in–that’s what i use. sucks that this new app isn’t compatible with all BB’s

Clearly a problem with the 8520 handset it seems. A friend with the Bold 9700 uploaded the new FB app and Places works for her without problem. Even after I upgraded my device software to v.5 (the same as the Bold 9700), it still refuses to work. Sort it out BB!

The blackberry 8520 will not work with facebook places because it needs gps and guess what? this model does not have gps

However you can pair with a external device via bluetooth that has gps and use theirs, to do that, pair with a bluetooth device in the normal way and to set it as your gps data source, go to options, advanced options, location settings and change the gps data source to the bluetooth device, it should work then

Hi i tried your tip and connected/paired my BB to my N97 via Bluetooth and opened the GPS app on the Nokia,went back to the BB & thru the options to change the GPS Data source to Bluetooth device but it states NONE in a black square….wouldnt give me the option to change it!

I will not download Fb Places mainly because My problem is with the fB app i already have. I dont recieve a notification everytime something comes in, only every once and a while. When i log on from my pc i have tuns of messages that never mad it to my phone. This app is useless.

Ok, this is how I got it to working. I went to blackberry maps got the satellites to find my location, THEN I logged on to facebook places and guess what it worked!!

Problems I have had with the new app:

1. I cannot delete a couple of messages. I have tried a hard reboot, reinstalling the Facebook app, deleting all messages via the Blackberry Desktop Manager, making sure there are no unread messages on the site (via my desktop). They will not disappear.

2. No one warned me that, unlike older versions, if you delete a message on your Blackberry, it is now deleted on the Facebook site. There is no option to choose to delete the message only on the handheld (like with email). Taking care of step 1 above, I made 20 recent messages unread. When they appeared on my Blackberry, I deleted them. Alas, permanently, now.

You can acctually turn places on in the options menu. Stupid!!!

I have downloaded the latest version of FB for BB software. I have the Places icon, the GPS Location is set to Location On, the maps are defaulted to BlackBerry Maps, and it still has the Share My Location with Facebook grayed out so I can’t select it. Why is it not possible to delete posts on your profile page? You seem to be able to do everything else with a post but that.

I used to like my blackberry, even more so than my iPhone because it had less error rate with auto correct in texting, however, the pros now are beginning to be outweighed by the cons, there is NO response from blackberry on anyone with 8520 not working for those of us with out GPS ability (can not be enabled, not editable) So… after a long consideration, I have decided im going back to my iphone… weeks have gone by to no responses on my issues from blackberry, least with the iphone all i have to do is go to the apple store and have a tech show me what to do to fix issues… later blackberry…

I’m using the BB Curve 8520, in the UK, on O2. I’ve updated the facbook app, so I’m using the latest one, but I can’t check the greyed-out box which says ‘Share my Location with Facebook’.

I followed everyone’s advice and went to Options > Advanced Options > GPS > Location On, but that still didn’t work, so I followed more advice and updated the software on my BB, so I’m now using the v5.0.0.681. Now when I go to Options > Advanced Options, GPS isn’t there anymore!!!!!

When I click on Location Settings, the options I’ve got are:
GPS Data Source – None (which I can’t change)
Location Services – Location Off (which I also can’t change)
Location Data – Enabled (which could be changed to Disabled or Disabled while Roaming)

No one answered my question below, but I have a simple piece of advice for my fellow BlackBerry users who can’t get Places to work: KEEP TRYING. Assuming you have your GPS activated and BlackBerry maps installed, try to check in several (if not, many) times a day. I kept trying over and over and, eventually, miraculously the “Check In” bar appeared. I clicked on it and now Places works…most of the time. (I’m on a Storm 2, by the way.) I still get the “Your location is temporarily not available” message occasionally, but it may be because I’m in an area with bad GPS reception (such as downtown Chicago). Good luck!

Hey all. I went through all the comments to see if anyone else had posted about this and i didn’t see it (If it has and i missed it, I apologize). Since the new Facebook application, it now appears that in the options, you can either NOT have your blackberry messages come to your main message window OR if you do have them go to the main message window and you delete them off your facebook, it AUTOMATICALLY deletes them from the blackberry server. That never used to be that way and though I love having my messages go to the same place, I hate not being able to delete messages without losing them on the server. Am I doing something wrong or is this just something in the application that for some reason the developers thought would be an improvement but is not??

I have a Blackberry Curve 8520. I have updated my version of Blackberry to version 5, all of the updates are done.
Before updating to the new version, I was able to turn GPS on, but after updating to version 5, I cannot turn location services ON anymore, there is only one choice and that is OFF.

Twitter seems to be finding my location and it is quite precise ..

For those who are still unable to use FB places feature, I found this solution.

Go to Options -> Advanced options-> GPS -> and there you should have some device as the GPS Data source. This could be a bluetooth device which you would have paired earlier from your Blackberry.

If you don’t have any device selected in that list , Places will not work on 8520. I tried that removing all bluetooth devices.

There is no need to keep Bluetooth ON just we need to give a device in source.

That device need not to be a GPS compatible device.

And as shared earlier you need to install the latest version of FB app and logout from FB app and then do a device pull and log back in to use the FB places.

Also FB places should be enabled in your FB privacy settings.

I give up. As far as I can tell, the Places function on my Storm 2 (which, yes, has GPS enabled and BBerry Maps installed) works about 25% of the time (if that). It’s essentially useless. What’s funny is I’m not really a big FourSquare/Geotagging person, but I’ve been obsessed with Places because it…just…won’t…work. I was at several locations this weekend that should have been easily trackable via GPS and Places failed me each and every time. I mostly love my BlackBerry but this has been a huge disappointment.

Yeah, I have the Curve 8530 from US Cellular and I can’t check the share my location with facebook box either. And GPS location is on, Something called The location Data is enabled, The location Aiding is enabled and still nothing…..

Alright guys for weeks I had the problem that most users are having. I operate on a blackberry curve 8520 with Rogers in Canada. I went to the menu screen > options > advanced options > gps and turned it to location on. I then went back to my facebook app, LOGGED OUT, turned my phone off and then back on. I logged in and when I went back to facebook and places the check in option was available. Under facbeook options the places option is still grey but my places work!!

i am having the same problem too and i am PiSSED!
It deleted messages with important info in them that i needed… and facebook wont respond about it either when i reported it. I think I am going to try to go back to the previous version…

well that is stupid…. and nobody warned us when we upgraded! i lost a LOT of important information that I can no longer get back. I let facebook know and i got no response.
I am pissed. this is VERY inconvenient.
i suggest NOT having it set up like that. it’s a hinderance and i am going to try to get back to a previous version…
I like my notifications in one place and all… but I’d like to ONLY delete things from my black berry…
at least when i delete email from my blackberry i can still find it again on AOL. This is ridiculous and i am VERY disappointed. I don’t require all my OLD messages in my stupid facebook app… seems like a waste of space… thats what the facebook mobile site is for…

8520 is a lowend edition to blackberry that doesnt support gps, so you guys your screwed unless they alow some type of download of gps off the blackberry website. sorry. Facebook runs off gps

It won’t work because you dont have gps on 8520 because its a low end blackberry, you simply get what you pay for.

Okay so im getting really frustrated now. I have a blackberry curve 8520 and i have been on options GPS and set location to ‘on’ however above that it says GPS data sourse None and gives me a list of paired bluetooth devices? Hey guys! I have the new blackberry 3g pink phone. To get places to work on this phone (I’m sure it’s similar on other blackberrys) you first need to go to your home screen and click on options. Then go to advanced options and click on GPS. Under GPS Servies click “location on” and then save. Next go to facebook and click places. From there it will let you “check in” I hope this helps!

It’s stupid, the fact its not worked for so long, is annoying! I pay over £25 for my phone a month, and I expect to get fully working apps!

I’m not able to activate my Facebook Places (share my location) 8520. This is very disappointing because this would be a useful tool. This will not work on ORANGE as they lock the GPS, my friend has the exact same phone on 02 and hers works. I contacted orange and spoke to some dumb customer service operative who tried to blame ORANGE. Orange have really disapointed my this time!.

IT WORKED!! I have the blackberry bold and I kept getting the message that my location was temporarily unavailable. I did exactly what she said and now it works!

In the future, I would love it if the “Like” and “Comment” buttons were more like the iPhone version where you click a little “+” button to display the “Like” and “Comment” buttons. The reason being, on the Torch, it’s really easy to accidentally hit those buttons while scrolling up and down. It’s rather annoying having to “unlike” something every single time the button is selected. Plus, it’s make a cleaner UI.

An improvement from 1.8 but still has a lot of catching up to do from other Facebook apps for other phones.

Reboot your device by doing a battery pull. After the reboot, make sure you have a clear view of the sky and try again.

You may wish to try connecting via Bluetooth to a laptop if you have one. I’m not sure how well it works for Windows laptops, but doing this on my MacBook worked perfectly. Just remember to stay connected between smartphone and laptop via bluetooth until the FIRST check-in is complete. After this, you shouldn’t need the bluetooth device anymore. Hope this helps

My recommendation is to perform your first check-in from your smartphone while connected to something like a MacBook over bluetooth. This is how I enabled the option to check-in. Also, you only need to be connected via bluetooth for the first check in.

This will only work if you are connected to something via Bluetooth. My MacBook doesn’t have GPS, however this worked for me, with an 8520. This then allowed the first check-in to allow it to be used without being connected via bluetooth, well, anywhere.

The issue seems to only be the case around the first check-in on Facebook Places. As an 8520 user myself, I simply connected my MacBook to my BlackBerry 8520, which by the way, my MacBook doesn’t have GPS (go figure). I simply kept it connected while I performed the first check-in. After this, I didn’t need to be connected to anything via bluetooth in order to check-in. It would work like Foursquare or Twitter per-se. I hope this helps.

it can’t just be a 8520 fault, i have 3 friends with the phone as well and 2 of them have it working and me and the other can’t! exact same phone, all o2 and same tarriffs!!

enable gps location to “on” in your blackberry options menu. it is a phone setting that has to be enabled not a facebook thing, as soon as you enable that, your “places” icon will automatically enable and you can start using it.

yes 8520 does have gps and does have the ability to share facebook place my friends use this and then i asked them to fix it and they cant

I have the Blackberry Curve 8520 w/T-mobile and I never experienced any problems until I updated the programs to v5.0.0.900 once I updated the programs my phone began to freeze but it did give me the check in option and I was able to check in anywhere I went then after awhile it began to say “location is temporarily not available” and now it no longer lets me check in I see FB Places but I’m not allowed to check in or see local options, only can see my friend’s check ins I’ve gone to Facebook options but my share my location with facebook is grayed out so then I went to Options>Advanced >GPS>Location On but You CANNOT switch the “Location Off” to “Location ON” at all

If you go to GPS setting, there’s another setting (besides Location Aiding) that you need to change. It’s the GPS Services; you need to change it from “E911 Only” to “Location On” Hope that helps!
