Attention BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet owners and Facebook® users! It’s my pleasure to show you the Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet app, which offers the most popular features and functionality of Facebook in a tablet-optimized experience.

The Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet app will be showcased at the BlackBerry World™ 2011 conference and will become available for download from BlackBerry App World™ this week.

Let’s take a brief look at some of the key features of Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Facebook Chat

• Facebook Chat takes advantage of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet’s high-resolution screen by splitting the application into two separate panels for side-by-side viewing of your online contacts and active conversations.
• From within the Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet application, you’ll always be up to date on active chats. Notifications of new Chat messages will appear in the Incoming Chat popover located on the Nav Bar, so you can quickly and easily access new Chat messages as you receive them from anywhere in the app.

News Feed

• The News Feed feature helps you to stay notified on all your friends status updates and photos. Clicking on a status update with a web link seamlessly opens the BlackBerry PlayBook browser for you to view the content.
• You can also discuss and show appreciation for your friend’s content through the comment and “Like” features within the News Feed or on their profile pages.
• Of course, you can also publish your own status update or upload a photo from within the status publisher that’s accessible from the News Feed or your profile page.

Photo Uploading

• Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet allows for easy photo uploading and viewing. In addition to uploading photos from the Picture Library, you can tag friends, and view and post your comments and Likes.

Facebook Messages

• Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet allows you to compose, send and receive new Facebook messages. You can view your sent messages in the Outbox tab and messages from Pages you’re a fan of from within the Updates tab.

Friends List

• In Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, you can view your Friends List in two ways: a grid view (default) or a list view. From the list view there is an alphabetical scrollbar so you can find your friends quickly. You can also Search and add new Friends and Pages and view pending Friend Requests from within the Friends List. Who doesn’t want more friends?

Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook tablet also offers an array of other familiar Facebook features we didn’t cover above, like Search and Notifications, to help you stay connected with friends and share your news while you’re on the go. I’m excited to announce the beta release of the Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones app v2.0 through BlackBerry® Beta Zone starting today. The Facebook app team here at Research In Motion® (RIM®) has been working hard to incorporate the feedback we have received from our users to make v2.0 the biggest update to the Facebook application since we released v1.0 more than three years ago. This initial release of v2.0 has a redesigned user interface and also offers Facebook Chat!

Below are some of the new features of Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0:

Facebook Chat

You can now check to see which of your Facebook friends are online and start a Chat conversation from within the Facebook application or within the unified mailbox on your BlackBerry smartphone.

On Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones, as long as your status is set to online, you still receive notifications even if you are not using the Facebook app.

Improved News Feed

Improved News Feed interactions enable you to scroll through your News Feed without accidentally clicking ‘Like’; you can simply click the ‘More’ button (+) to interact with your friends’ posts. Enhanced publisher functionality allows you post photos to your Wall, add an update, or check in to a Facebook Place from the News Feed.

New Navigation Control

By introducing a whole new way to navigate the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones application, we’ve moved from a static navigation bar to a drop-down navigation control that is scalable to support new features in the future.

Notifications Bar

Borrowing from the BlackBerry® 6 OS’ “Today View”, the notifications bar offers an easy way to access your Facebook Notifications, Messages, Friend Requests and Chats from anywhere in the Facebook application.

External Notifications

You don’t have to leave the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app to see what’s new on your device. The BlackBerry smartphone external notifications header lets you see when you’ve received a new email message or BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) message without having to leave the Facebook application.

New Profile UI and Profile Information Viewing

The New Profile UI now provides Wall, Info, and Photo tabs for an even better browsing experience. New to v2.0 is the ability to view key information on Profiles and Pages, such as contact info, basic info like birthdays, hometown and relationship status, and likes and interests.

Head over to BlackBerry Beta Zone today to be one of the first users to join the beta for Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0! As this is an early preview, we have a limited number of beta spots open. Also, please note the initial beta release will be available for BlackBerry 6 users only, but support for BlackBerry® Device Software 4.6 and higher will be added in subsequent beta releases and will be available in the official version.

Your input is valuable in shaping our app, and we strive to incorporate your requested features and improvements in future versions. With that being said, I’m pleased to announce that Facebook Places is now available on BlackBerry smartphones. The final release of Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v1.9 will be available for download in BlackBerry App World™ (North America only) within the next 24 hours!

What is Facebook Places?

With Facebook Places, you can use your BlackBerry smartphone to conveniently share where you are, what you’re doing, and who you’re with. While you are checking in, you can tag a friend and include a comment to let your friends know what you’re up to. You can also see where your friends are and what they’re doing.

Facebook Places uses cell tower triangulation and the GPS technology on your BlackBerry smartphone to find places of interest close to your location. You can view the location of a Facebook Place on a map to see exactly where it is and check out the surrounding area. You can also get directions to and from a Facebook Place simply by clicking on the map image, which will seamlessly launch the BlackBerry® Maps application.

To start using Places, click on the Places icon on the nav bar. You can check in to Facebook Places within a 2-kilometer radius of your location and see where your friends are checking in around you.

Checking in is a cinch – you can either select a nearby place or add a new place if your location isn’t listed. Keep in mind that any place you create is public, so other people can view your created place.

You can add comments and tag friends when checking in, or view who is currently at your location.

Simply launch BlackBerry Maps by clicking on the map image on the check-in screen. This allows you to view an enlarged map of your location and provides additional map functionality like getting directions.

Today, I’m excited to announce the availability of a new version of Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones through BlackBerry Beta Zone. (Make sure to sign up for a Beta Zone account to try out v1.9!) We continually strive to improve the ‘Facebook for BlackBerry’ experience – in v1.8 we focused on optimizing the speed and performance of the application; now in V.1.9 we are adding more Facebook features that BlackBerry smartphone fans have been asking for.

Here are a few examples of what’s new in Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v1.9:

Dedicated Inbox

You’ve been asking for the ability to view just your Facebook messages, so we’ve now added options on how and where you can view your Facebook messages to help you more easily manage your Facebook communications. We now offer two different ways to view your Facebook messages:

1. The Facebook Messages view lets you see only your Facebook messages in one inbox.
2. If you prefer to have all of your messages in one place you can set up your Facebook messages to appear within your BlackBerry Messages inbox.

Also, as part of these new views, the app pre-fetches 30 of your existing Facebook messages in order to pre-populate your inbox with your existing messages when you first log in!

With v.1.9 the Facebook Messages inbox on your BlackBerry smartphone are now also synchronized with your inbox on the web, so deleted and opened items now stay in sync. Once you’ve logged in, Facebook for BlackBerry will continue to leverage our unique BlackBerry Push service to keep messages updated. The end goal is an integrated email interface that looks as much like your everyday Facebook inbox as possible!

Facebook Search

With Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v1.9, you can use the new Facebook Search function to search Facebook for individual people and pages. From the results that your query brings back, depending on the privacy settings, you can view mutual friends, enlarge profile photos (so you know for sure that a person really is your old high-school friend!), and send a request to add them as a friend.

If you’re searching for a Page, you can choose to “Like it” to start following when it’s updated.

Another nifty feature in v1.9 for BlackBerry® 6 users is that Facebook Search is tied into the system’s integrated Universal Search, so if you search your BlackBerry smartphone for a query, Universal Search will also pull in results from Facebook!

Friends List, Page List, Updated Navigation Bar

In addition to the features listed above, we’ve also worked to make sure that the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app looks easy to use – and functions as smoothly as possible. To this end, we’ve optimized the Friends List to add profile photos of your friends and have made it possible to view pages in list form. We’ve also updated the navigation bar so you can view your profile, and add new icons for Facebook search and Message view.

Now that we’ve piqued your interest, go and sign up for the beta, but don’t wait too long as there are a limited number of spots available for the beta program. We’ll give you a bit of a teaser and confirm that the full release of Facebook for BlackBerry smartphone v1.9 will also include Facebook Places and additional UI updates. Stay tuned for more announcements!

In part one of our overview of Twitter® for BlackBerry® smartphones, we went through some of the basic functionality for using the mobile Twitter app on your BlackBerry® smartphone – how to log in, how to post a Tweet, and so on. Here, we’re going to go a little bit deeper and show you how to view your profile, follow other Twitter users, change your notification options, and more.

Let’s get started with part two!

Twitter Profiles

View your profile:

Viewing your profile is useful when you want to make sure your info is up to date. It also displays your entire personal timeline of Tweets.

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click My Profile.

Change your profile picture and information:

If you need to change anything in your profile – your picture included – it can be done right in the My Profile section.

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click My Profile.
3. Press the Menu key.
4. Click Edit My Profile.
5. Do any of the following:
a) Beside your profile picture, click Change. Click a picture.
b) Type your new profile information.
6. Click Update.

View a person’s profile:

Want to check out a specific Twitter user’s info and a timeline of their Tweets? Here’s how you do it:

1. To view the profile of a person you follow or a person that follows you, press the Menu key. Click My Profile. Click Following or Followers. Click a profile picture.
2. To view the profile of another person, press the Menu key and click Search. Type your search criteria, then press the Enter key. Click a profile picture.

Twitter Interaction

Follow/Unfollow a person:

If there’s a particular user on Twitter that you want to keep up with, it’s as easy as Following them in your timeline. Likewise, if you decide you don’t want to Follow a specific user any longer, you can Unfollow them with almost the same procedure:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Find People.
3. Type a person’s name or user name.
4. Highlight a person’s profile picture.
5. Press the Menu key.
6. Click Follow (or Unfollow).

Block/unblock a person:

If you’ve already Unfollowed a user and you want to go even further, you can block specific Twitter users from following you or viewing your timeline. If you ever want to reverse this decision, you can Unblock them at this screen as well.

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Find People.
3. Type a person’s name or username.
4. Press the Enter key.
5. Click the person’s profile picture.
6. Click Block (or Unblock).

View people that Follow you:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click My Profile.
3. Click Followers.

View people that you follow:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click My Profile.
3. Click Following.

View tweets that mention you:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Mentions.

Twitter Notification Options

Change your notification options:

This is useful if you want to start or stop receiving notifications on your BlackBerry smartphone device’s Home Screen.

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
a) To stop receiving a notification on the Home Screen of your device when there are new tweets posted in your tweet timeline, clear the Notify on new Tweets checkbox.
3. To stop receiving notifications in the messages application, clear the Include Twitter Messages in the BlackBerry Messages Application checkbox.

Change your timeline refresh options:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
a) To refresh your tweet timeline automatically, select the Automatic Tweet Refresh check box.
b) To change how often your tweet timeline is refreshed, change the Refresh Tweets Every: field.

We’ve seen a lot of excitement from the community about BlackBerry® 6, and one of the new features I’ve noticed a lot of people talking about is Social Feeds. Since I worked on the Social Feeds app, I thought it would be great to talk about it in more detail with you. Social Feeds is designed to access and interact with your social networks including BlackBerry® Messenger® (BBM™), Facebook®, MySpace® and Twitter®.

When creating the Social Feeds application, we received inspiration from the part of BlackBerry smartphones that every user is likely familiar with – the Messages inbox. The Messages inbox provides a single point of access for all communications – email, texts, BBM, phone, and so on. One of the goals of the Social Feeds application was to create that same ‘BlackBerry inbox’ experience, but with a focus on social communications. As a result, Social Feeds is one single access point to stay on top of – and in touch with – all of your online social networks. Within the app you’ll see all of your friends’ latest Facebook status updates, tweets, BBMs and more (like your favorite RSS feeds).

Once you are in the Social Feeds application, your first choice is to decide what you want to view. Using the top navigation bar, you can toggle between the Social and RSS views, or filter down within the Social or RSS view for specific sources (for example, filter by Facebook or Twitter or MySpace items for the Social view, or different RSS feeds in the RSS view). Clicking on a specific social status update will take you directly into that social network’s application on your BlackBerry smartphone, and clicking on a specific RSS post will take you directly to that content via the BlackBerry® Browser.

One of my favorite features in Social Feeds is the ability to quickly and easily update all your social statuses at once. I’ve found it really simplifies managing my overall social presence. With this feature, I can write one update and then post it to as many different networks as I’d like, simply by selecting “New Post” from the Social Feeds menu and choosing which social networks I want to send my update to.

We’ve also worked hard to deeply integrate the communications and information from the Social Feeds app into your BlackBerry Contacts list. Simply by clicking on a contact’s name, you can see all the latest notifications and communications you’ve had with them (note: this feature requires users to allow automatic contact syncing in Facebook, and manual contact syncing for Twitter, MySpace and BlackBerry Messenger).

It’s been really exciting to work on the team creating a new ‘core’ social application for BlackBerry smartphones. One of my favorite things about the Social Feeds project (aside from creating the app!) was that I got to work with a number of different teams across Research In Motion® (RIM) and meet a number of new people – more new friends to check up on using Social Feeds!

It seems like only yesterday Twitter® for BlackBerry® Smartphones was revealed to the world via a limited preview. Since then, and throughout the public beta, the development team has been hard at work listening to and incorporating your feedback. Now that Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones is no longer in beta, we thought it would be a good idea to review some of the key features for users new to the app. Today we’ll be looking at some of basic functions to help you get tweeting; in future posts we’ll tackle more advanced features. Anyone interested in learning more can check out the handy Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones user guide, which contains a lot of the information we’ll be discussing here. Let’s get started!

Twitter Basics

Twitter login:

Before you can get tweeting with Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones, you need to login with your Twitter account information. If you don’t have a Twitter account yet, don’t worry – you can sign up right from within the app!

1. On the BlackBerry Smartphone Home screen or in a folder, click the Twitter icon.
a) If you already have a Twitter account, type your login information. Click Login.
b) If you do not have a Twitter account, click Sign Up.

Menu options:

The Twitter menu is where you’ll find many useful Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones functions. We’ll be covering some of these features today and others in future posts, but it’s important to note that they’re all housed in one handy place and can be accessed by pressing the Menu key on your BlackBerry smartphone.

Check for latest version of Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones:

The Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones development team is always finding new ways to improve the app, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest version to maximize the Twitter experience on your BlackBerry smartphone.

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Options.
a) To check for the latest version manually, click Check for Upgrade Now. Complete the instructions on the screen.
b) To check for the latest version automatically, select the Automatically Check for the Newest Updates check box.

Start Tweeting!

Reading, writing and responding to tweets is the core of the Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones experience. Below you’ll find instructions on the three basic ways to send a tweet out to the world (posting a tweet, retweeting and replying to tweets), as well as sharing tweets with others and adding cool things to your tweets like links and photos.

Post a tweet:

1. On the Twitter Home screen, in the What’s happening? field, type a tweet (140 characters or less!).
2. Click Update.

Reply to a tweet:

An @reply is “a public message sent from one person to another, distinguished from normal updates by the @username prefix” (via the Twitter FAQ). Here’s how you reply to tweets in your tweet stream:

1. Highlight a tweet.
2. Press the Menu key.
a) To reply to the person that posted the tweet, click Reply.
b) To reply to all of the people that are mentioned in a tweet, click Reply All.

Retweet a tweet:

Retweeting is “the act of forwarding another user’s tweet to all of your followers” (via the Twitter Glossary) and is a great way to both share and discover information on Twitter. What are you waiting for? Start retweeting!

1. On the Twitter Home screen, highlight a tweet.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Retweet until the Twitter Home screen appears.

Add a picture to your tweet:

1. On the Twitter Home screen, in the What’s happening? field, type a tweet.
2. Press the Menu key or camera icon on home screen.
3. Click Add Photo.
4. Click your desired picture.
5. Click Tweet.

Add a link to a tweet or direct message:

1. While browsing the internet from your BlackBerry smartphone, from a web page, press the Menu key.
2. Click Send Page Address.
3. Click Twitter.
4. Click Direct Message or Tweet.
5. Type your tweet.
6. You will be prompted to shorten link, click Continue.
7. Select Replace to replace the link with the shortened link or Skip.
8. Click Tweet.

Send a tweet to an external application (ie. Facebook or email):

1. Highlight a tweet.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Send To.
4. Select which external application you’d like to send the tweet to.

Set tweet as your Facebook status:

1. Highlight a tweet.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Send To.
4. Click Facebook.
5. Click Share.

Direct Messaging

Direct messages are another great way to keep in touch with your friends on Twitter. Also called a DM, “direct messages are private messages between only the sender and recipient” (via the Twitter Glossary). It’s important to note that you can’t send a direct message to someone who is not following you.

Send a direct message:

1. Press the Menu key.
2. Click Direct Messages.
3. Click Compose Message.
4. Type part of a person’s name or Twitter user name.
5. Click a person.
6. Type your direct message.
7. Click Send.

Quote Tweets
- The new version of Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones allows users to quote a tweet by selecting the “Quote Tweet” from the menu options. Using the new feature adds quotation marks around the original tweet, and users can then add or edit the content of the original tweet.

Username Auto Complete
- While tweeting, when you type an “@” followed by characters, the auto complete feature pops up a list of users as you type. This is a handy tool for quickly adding a long username or if you can’t quite remember how to spell a friend’s handle.

Go to User
- Users can now access Twitter profiles from anywhere within Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphones using the auto complete feature mentioned above. Simply select “Go To User” in the Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones menu.
Whoops! The “Go to User” function is coming in a future version of Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones. Sorry for the confusion!

Personal Information Guard
Designed to help keep your personal information safe! A warning appears in Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones when certain personal information (e.g. email address, PIN, phone number) is about to be shared.

Additional Photo viewing support
In addition to Twitpic support, users now have the ability to view tweeted photos from YFrog and TweetPhoto!

View Geotagged Tweets
Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones does not yet allow users to add geolocation to their tweets. In the new version, however, the locations of geotagged tweets can be viewed using BlackBerry® Maps.

New Navigation Hotkeys
A bunch of new hotkeys have been added for speedy navigation. Familiarize yourself with the list below as they are quite helpful:

• R (reply)
• L (reply all)
• Space (page down)
• F (retweet)
• C (compose)
• D (refresh)
• Alt+0 (home)
• Alt+1 (mentions)
• Alt+2 (lists)
• Alt+3 (profile)
• Alt+4 (inbox)
• Alt+5 (find people)
• Alt+6 (search)
• Alt+7 (popular topics)

The Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones application has been designed to take advantage of the BlackBerry platform to create a user experience that will be familiar to both Twitter and BlackBerry smartphone users. Some of the areas that we have focused on are:

• Push technology and Message List integration to notify you of your direct messages as soon as they arrive.
• Send/Share BlackBerry menu integration along with bit.ly URL shortening so that you can share your favorite BlackBerry App World™ applications, interesting websites or a random picture from your camera with your Twitter followers.

Here’s what it looks like to recommend an application to your Twitter followers from within BlackBerry App World.

Here’s what it looks like to share a website via Twitter using automatic bit.ly URL shortening from within the BlackBerry® Browser.

You can also capture what’s happening around you with your BlackBerry camera and send the shot straight to TwitPic!

Key Twitter for BlackBerry Smartphone features:

The Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones home page contains navigation icons for @mentions, user profile, direct messages, people search, topic search and trending topics.

Want to see who is following you, or manage who you are following? Access your profile to see and manage both lists.

If you need to talk to your followers directly, you can send a direct message from your Twitter inbox or through your BlackBerry message List.

Use the people search feature to find and follow new people.

Find out what is being said around you using a GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphone to filter Twitter topic searches based on how close they are to your position.

Check out the current or recent popular Twitter topics to make sure you’re among the first to know what’s being talked about on Twitter.

Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones supports the official Twitter Re-Tweet feature, making it easy to share interesting tweets with your followers.

As I mentioned above, Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones is available right now only through beta invite, but it will soon be available to everyone through Test Center in BlackBerry App World. We would love to hear your thoughts on what additional Twitter features you’d like to see in the application. As part of my job as a Product Manager here at Research In Motion (RIM), I make sure to spend time reading through user feedback so that this feedback can be utilized in future application versions. As part of our continuous effort to both improve product quality and listen to what BlackBerry® smartphone users have to say, RIM has launched a new Test Center category in the BlackBerry App World™ storefront.

To kick off the Test Center category we have released eBay® v1.0 and MySpace® v2.0 for BlackBerry smartphones as beta applications. We are excited to use the reviews section for each of the applications launched in the Test Center category to collect user feedback so we can help ensure future application releases reflect the features and changes users are looking for.
