Truth, Not Truthy: BBM First Messenger to Get Stephen Colbert Emoji

BBM / 05.20.16 / Mike Mitchell

Hey #TeamBlackBerry, it’s been a while since my last blog eh? I’m good, thanks for asking. Now that we’re all caught up, I may as well just get right to it. I’m going to let you in on something about me: I’m a Stephen Colbert fan. I’d even go as far as to say I’m part of Colbert Nation. So when I heard that the Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organization that regulates characters and text represented by computer systems, approved a new emoji with a raised eyebrow – dubbed the Stephen Colbert emoji – I had a couple of thoughts.

First: That might be the perfect emoji! Seriously. It has so many applications.

Second: I can’t wait to get that emoji on my BlackBerry.

emoticon_015_sarchastic_updatedTrue to form, BlackBerry continued its legacy as an originator, with BBM being the first messaging platform to add the Colbert emoji (see left).

It only makes sense that the company to invent the smartphone would be the first to add an emoji nicknamed after a fellow originator. I see Stephen Colbert and BlackBerry much the same. Both have large cult-like followings (#TeamBlackBerry, anyone?) and both dare to be different and stand out from the pack by being unique.

I admire innovators. It’s what drew me to Colbert’s comedy in the first place. It’s why the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 was my first smartphone, and it’s why I continue to love my BlackBerry Passport.

So the next time you’re talking to somebody on BBM, and you need something to convey “skepticism, accompanied by the concepts of disapproval and (mild) surprise,” don’t worry. BBM and the Colbert emoji have your back. Note: the emoji is available today for iOS and Android users on BBM, and will be coming to BB10 users in the next BBM update.
