InSecurity Podcast: Tom Pace on the Value of an Ounce of Prevention

According to the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 4% of people will click on any given phishing campaign, and on average it takes only 16 minutes until the first click is registered.

A savvy user will report the phishing campaign within 28 minutes, but it takes as little as only 12 minutes for an attacker to gain foothold on a corporate network, encrypt a critical database, and then extort the target organization for a ransom of tens of thousands or even millions of dollars.

In this week’s episode of the InSecurity Podcast, Matt Stephenson sits down with BlackBerry Cylance VP of Worldwide Consulting Tom Pace to have a chat about why ransomware is still a tremendous threat to organizations large and small.

Fresh off an appearance on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Tom talks with Matt about the effects a data breach can have on an organization, its stakeholders and the clients they serve, and even an entire industry. The 60 Minutes segment can be viewed here. You can also view an additional Overtime segment with more footage and tips on steps you can take to avoid being a victim of a phishing or ransomware attack.

Editor’s note: mention of “customers” in the episode was specifically referencing organizations who had enlisted the assistance of the BlackBerry Cylance Professional Services team only after they had been the target of a ransomware attack – no organizations who were current BlackBerry Cylance customers were compromised.
