BSides MSP: Practical Applications of Adversarial Machine Learning

NEWS / 09.18.19 / Josh Fu

What: Security BSides 2019
When: Sept 26th and 27th, 2019
Where: Be The Match Headquarters, Minneapolis, Minnesota

I am super excited to speak at my first Security BSides, which is happening from September 24-25! It will be in at the Be the Match headquarters in downtown Minneapolis. I will be speaking about Adversarial ML: How Artificial Intelligence is Enabling Cyber Resilience.

I’m going to venture to say that anyone reading this already knows what BSides is. Because of that, I’m going to try very hard not to butcher how to describe it for those that may not know what to expect.

BSides invites participants to come to the conference, not just attendees. Everyone who attends is expected to give what knowledge they can to help enrich and strengthen the community. In their own words: “we are a do-ocracy; in other words, if you want it, then you do it or make it happen.  We do not have members, but rather participants.  You are the "we" and we can only be successful if you make that happen for yourself.”

How AI is Enabling Cyber Resilience

As the technology to protect organizations has evolved, attacker strategies will also evolve to try and circumvent these technologies. I will present mathematical concepts as well as practical applications of adversarial machine learning. This is important because of how much more prevalent ML defensive technology is in organizations in order to stop attackers. Because of this, everyone should gain a better understanding of what AI technology actually is, how it is made, and the ways that it can be misused, just like any tool, for illicit gain.

At BSides MSP, I will continue to take this large, complex idea and simplify it and the mathematical concepts presented in order to be easy to learn. Part of being a leader is going beyond reacting to a threat to being able to proactively defend against and prevent threats.

About Security BSides 2019

Security B-Sides MSP is an opportunity to directly connect and create trusted relationships with key members of the cybersecurity community. Each regional B-Sides event is the result of a community-driven effort for and by members of the information security community. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation and create opportunities for individuals to participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It’s where conversations about the next big thing are happening.

Unlike other events we do not have attendees, we have participants. B-Sides MSP provides an intimate environment for the participants to directly engage with the speakers and content providers before, during, and after their presentation. Participants are looking for more than just information; they are looking to make connections they may call upon throughout the rest of their careers.
